Matthew McConaughey speaks at White House briefing, makes plea to leaders for gun reform

Uvalde, Texas native Matthew McConaughey visited the White House on Tuesday, and emotionally urged leaders to make the loss of 19 children and two teachers in last month’s mass school shooting “matter” by enacting stricter gun laws.

McConaughey said during the White House briefing:  “So I am here today in the hopes of applying what energy, reason and passion that I have and to try and turn this moment into a reality because this moment is different. We start by making the loss of these lives matter.  We start by making laws that save lives and don’t infringe on our Second Amendment rights. We start right now by voting to pass policies that can keep us from having so many Columbine, Sandy Hooks, Parklands, Las Vegas and Uvaldes.”

McConaughey called for gun responsibility, not gun control, saying: “We need background checks. We need to raise the minimum age to purchase an AR-15 rifle to 21. We need a waiting period for those rifles. We need red flag laws and consequences for those who abuse them.”

McConaughey visited his hometown after the shooting, and as he spoke he showed photos of the children killed and described how their families pleaded with him to make sure their loss mattered.  The actor said: “We need to invest in mental health care. We need safer schools. We need to restrain sensationalized media coverage. We need to restore our family values. We need to restore American values.”

McConaughey challenged leaders in Washington, D.C. to finally enact gun laws that save lives: “Can both sides see beyond the political problem at hand and admit that we have a life preservation problem on our hands This should not be a partisan issue. As divided as our country is, this gun responsibility issue is one that we agree on more than we don’t Find the middle ground, a place where most of us Americans live anyway, especially on this issue, because I promise you, America, you and me, we are not as divided as we are being told we are.”

Los Angeles Angels fire manager Joe Maddon as losing streak hits 12 games

Amid a 12-game losing streak, the Los Angeles Angels fired manager Joe Maddon on Tuesday.  The team announced that Phil Nevin has been named interim manager.  The Angels were 10 games above .500 two weeks ago, but have since fallen to 27-29. The 12-game losing streak ties a franchise record for a season, putting the Angels in danger of missing the postseason for the eighth straight year.

The 68-year-old Maddon told The Athletic he was very surprised by first-time general manager Perry Minasian’s decision, saying: “You always rely on people in charge to read the tea leaves properly. This time, they did not. You didn’t even have to ask me. You can ask any of the players or coaches. They’re the ones who really know. Perry was in a tough spot. I understand that. Let me just put it that way. I would really rely on the sentiments of the coaches and the players.”

Maddon, a three-time Manager of the Year, was in his third season with the Angels’ organization, where he had previously spent four decades as a player and a coach. Maddon went on to a successful nine-year run with the Tampa Bay Rays, and in 2016 he led the Chicago Cubs to their first World Series championship in more than 100 years.

The Angels began season this season at 27-17, but since then they have an AL-worst 6.31 ERA.  Said Maddon: ‘We’ve got guys hurt. The bullpen had a really hard time. And we just stopped hitting. It’s just one of those things that became contagious. It wasn’t an issue of camaraderie or lack of leadership. It was a calamity that occurred all at one time.’

Take a look at the first teaser for ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’

Lionsgate Films has released a 90-second teaser for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.  The preview shows a snowy landscape where frozen, golden birds and snakes appear to be defrosting, and the words “In 2023, the world will discover who is a songbird and who is a snake,” appear on the screen before a snake strikes at the camera.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes stars Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler, and is based on Suzanne Collin’s best-selling young adult novel. A film synopsis reads: “Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor.”

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set for release Nov. 17, 2023.

Queen to share previously-unreleased song with Freddie Mercury

Queen plans to share one more track featuring the late Freddie Mercury later this year. Roger Taylor and Brian May revealed the news while speaking with BBC Radio 2 ahead of their Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee concert performance over the weekend.

Queen drummer Roger Taylor said that the song in question was recorded during their sessions for the 1989 album The Miracle. Mercury had sung on the song during sessions in 1988, but when the album was released it was not among those that had made the cut for the record.  Said Taylor: “We did find a little gem from Freddie, that we’d kind of forgotten about. It’s wonderful, actually. It was a real discovery. It’s from The Miracle sessions, and I think it’s going to be out in September.”

May added:  “It was kind of hiding in plain sight. We looked at it many times and thought, ‘Oh no, we can’t really rescue that.’ But in fact, we went in there again and our wonderful engineering team went, ‘OK, we can do this and this.’ It’s like kind of stitching bits together. But it’s beautiful, it’s touching.”

Following Mercury’s death, May and Taylor have continued to keep the band’s music alive, spending five years with Free and Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers fronting their live performances. In 2011, American Idol’s Adam Lambert took over the lead vocals for Queen, and has remained with the group ever since.

Colorado Avalanche sweep Edmonton Oilers to advance to Stanley Cup Final

The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Edmonton Oilers 6-5 in overtime on Monday night, sweeping the playoff series in four games and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final.  The Avalanche advance to their first finals since 2001, when they won the Stanley Cup in seven games against the New Jersey Devils.

The Avalanche’s Artturi Lehkonen scored the game winning goal for Colorado to earn the win. Cale Makar finished with a game-high 5 points, including a goal and assist on Lehkonen’s game-winner. He becomes just the 7th defenseman in NHL history with 5-plus points in a playoff game.  Said Makar: “Our main thing is just trying to be resilient and making sure every night we’re bringing that same game. For us tonight it was just us trying to get on them early in the third period and try to turn the tides, but the boys did a great job.”

Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl recorded four assists to keep the Oilers in the game, and along with Connor McDavid, the duo became the ninth pair of teammates in NHL history to each register 30-plus points in the same postseason.

Colorado will face the winner of the Eastern Conference final between the Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup Final.  Game 4 of that series is Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET in Tampa, with the Rangers leading 2-1.
