Pantera’s Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown to be joined by guitarist Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante for 2023 reunion tour

Surviving Pantera members Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown are reuniting to tour in 2023 across North America, with guitarist Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante rounding out the lineup. The tour will mark the first Pantera live shows of any kind since the band’s final gig together in Yokohoma, Japan on August 26, 2001.

Billboard broke the news that Anselmo and Brown signed with Artist Group International for the tour. Artist Group International representative Peter Pappalardo released a statement, stating: “We are thrilled to be working with such an iconic band and bringing their music back to the fans.”  Later, Billboard updated the news: “The lineup has been given a green light by the estates of the band’s founders, Vincent ‘Vinnie Paul’ Abbott and ‘Dimebag’ Darrell Abbott, as well as Brown, who last year said Wylde wouldn’t tour with a reunited Pantera if that were to happen. It’s unclear what changed his mind.”

Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell was murdered onstage with Damageplan in 2004; drummer Vinnie Paul died at age 54 in 2018. Pantera formally broke up in November 2003, almost two years after what would be their final show. Billboard noted that the band is expected to headline “a number of major festivals across North America and Europe,” as well as staging their own headline shows.

Pantera has sold more than 20 million albums, with the band’s most successful album being 1994’s Far Beyond Driven, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. They’ve also earned platinum status for five albums and three long-form videos and received four Grammy nominations.

FDA authorizes emergency use of Novavax COVID-19 vaccine

The Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization for Novavax’s COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday. The two-shot vaccine was authorized for use in people 18 years and older.

FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert M. Califf said in a statement: “Authorizing an additional COVID-19 vaccine expands the available vaccine options for the prevention of COVID-19, including the most severe outcomes that can occur such as hospitalization and death. Today’s authorization offers adults in the United States, who have not yet received a COVID-19 vaccine, another option that meets the FDA’s rigorous standards for safety, effectiveness and manufacturing quality need to support emergency use authorization.”

The vaccine contains an added ingredient to produce a stronger immune response; and is a more traditional type of vaccine, in that it employs a whole, deactivated virus. The two other widely used COVID-19 vaccines, by Moderna and Pfizer, are mRNA-based.

Earlier in the week, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that the Biden administration had secured 3.2 million doses of Novavax’s COVID-19 vaccine. If the CDC signs off on use of the vaccine, it will be made available for free to U.S. states and jurisdictions shortly thereafter.

Severe storms in West Virginia result in heavy flooding, leaving approximately 40 people unaccounted for

Officials said on Thursday that over 40 people are unaccounted for and more than 100 homes have been damaged or destroyed due to severe flooding throughout Western Virginia on Wednesday. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management said that beginning on Tuesday through early Wednesday morning, torrential rain caused flash flooding in Buchanan County, Virginia, as well as widespread power outages and damages to roads and homes.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office said that 44 people, including children, in the Whitewood area were “unaccounted for.”  The Sheriff’s office added: “This does not mean the person is missing, it means we are attempting to reach and locate the person and check on their wellbeing.”  No fatalities have been confirmed.  Officials said search-and-rescue efforts are being made difficult as many roadways are blocked by landslides and approaches to bridges are washed out.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin declared a state of emergency in response to the floods, saying in a statement: “We are deeply saddened to learn that another flood has impacted a community still recovering from last year’s flood. In the wake of the devastation, I want Virginians in Buchanan County to know that we are making every resource available to help those impacted by this storm.”

Additionally in eastern Tennessee, severe thunderstorms prompted the evacuation of more than 400 people from a campground on the Little Pigeon River. No injuries were reported in the Tennessee flooding, but officials said that vehicles and debris from the Greenbrier Campground were washed downstream by floodwaters.

Goaltender Darcy Kuemper agrees to 5-year, $26.25 million deal with the Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals announced on Wednesday that goaltender Darcy Kuemper, who earned his first Stanley Cup title with the Colorado Avalanche this past season, has agreed to a five-year, $26.25 million deal with the organization.  Washington also signed another goaltender, Charlie Lindgren, on Wednesday. Lindgren’s contract is for 3-years and will average $1.1 million per season and is expected to serve as a backup to Kuemper.

Colorado decided against re-signing Kuemper, and acquired Alexandar Georgiev from the New York Rangers for a 2022 third-round pick, a 2022 fifth-round pick and a 2023 third-round pick. The 32-year-old Kuemper, an 11-year veteran, began his career in 2009 with the Minnesota Wild, where he spent five seasons before signing with the Los Angeles Kings and eventually being traded to the Arizona Coyotes. He was then dealt to the Avalanche after four seasons with Arizona.

Kuemper started 57 games in the net and tallied 1,616 saves — both career highs. His .921 save percentage ranked fifth in the NHL.

Toronto Blue Jays fire manager Charlie Montoyo after a disappointing first half of season

The Toronto Blue Jays confirmed on Wednesday that they have fired manager Charlie Montoyo, after a disappointing first half of the 2022 season. Toronto announced bench coach John Schneider will be the interim manager for the remainder of the season, while Casey Candaele will be the interim bench coach.

Montoyo’s firing comes after the Blue Jays have lost nine of their last 11 games, dropping them below the Rays and the Red Sox in the division standings. The Blue Jays hold a 46–42, and are fourth in the American League   East heading into next week’s All-Star break. Although Toronto are still in possession of one of the three AL Wild Card spots, the team’s performance has been underwhelming, given that they were expected to compete for a division title.

The 56-year-old Montoyo earned a 236–236 record over the last three and a half seasons with Toronto, however, the Blue Jays never finished above third in the AL East during his tenure and made the playoffs just one time during the shortened 2020 season. Montoyo spent almost two decades with the Tampa Bay Ray’s organization before joining Toronto in 2019.

Watch the trailer for the new documentary ‘The Return of Tanya Tucker’

The first trailer for the forthcoming documentary, The Return of Tanya Tucker, has been released. The film, due out this fall, will chronicle Tucker’s career resurgence in 2019 following her album While I’m Livin’, which was co-produced and largely written by Brandi Carlile.  You can take a look at the trailer – here.

Tanya’s voice is in all of us that sing country music. And it’s time for us to do an about-face and recognize that.”

Hulu renews ‘Only Murders in the Building’ for Season 3

Hulu has ordered a third season of the comedy series ‘Only Murders in the Building’ starring Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez.

Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment president Craig Erwich in a statement:  “Only Murders in the Building is the true crown jewel of our slate. Its appeal across generations, the intersection of humor and heart, and its truly original approach are a hallmark of and testament to Dan [Fogelman], John [Hoffman], Steve, Marty and Selena’s work. We are grateful to be able to continue telling the stories of Charles, Oliver and Mabel to viewers that have consistently shown us they crave more of this story.”

Only Murders in the Building follows the three leads as they try to solve a murder in their New York apartment building and record a true-crime podcast about it.
