The Chainsmokers to perform concert at the edge of space in 2024

The Chainsmokers — comprised of Drew Taggart and Alex Pall — will become the first musicians to perform at the edge of space, signing up to be launched into the stratosphere in a pressurized capsule.

Ryan Hartman, CEO of space tourism company World View, shared the news first with The Associated Press, saying that the Chainsmokers are slated to be onboard one of World View’s inaugural flights in 2024. The capsule will be tied to a stratospheric balloon and can hold up to eight passengers. Hartman said that he selected The Chainsmokers because he saw “firsthand and personally how their music reaches a lot of different groups, a lot of different age groups and just how passionate they are about their music and their art.”  World View told AP that at about 20 miles above Earth, The Chainsmokers will perform its set. The entire flight will last somewhere between six to twelve hours.

The Chainsmokers said in a statement:  “We have always dreamed of going to space and are stoked to collaborate with World View to have this adventure and experience. We know the views of both Earth and space are going to be incredible and inspiring and we hope to leverage this flight for creativity on future projects.”

NY judge orders Rudy Giuliani to testify in Georgia election investigation

A New York judge has ordered Rudy Giuliani to testify next month before a Fulton County special grand jury investigating whether former President Donald Trump and others interfered in Georgia’s 2020 elections.  New York State Supreme Court Justice Thomas Farber ordered Giuliani to appear Aug. 9, “and on any such other dates as this court may order,” after he and Trump attorney failed to attend a July 13 hearing to challenge the subpoena.

Giuliani was one of seven Trump associates subpoenaed earlier this month, including South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, who recently agreed to testify. Giuliani is being ordered to testify about appearances in December 2020 before Georgia’s state Senate where he and lawyer John Eastman blamed Trump’s loss to Democrat Joe Biden on disproven claims of widespread voter fraud.

The 23-person special grand jury has already started hearing evidence. If Giuliani fails to appear in Atlanta on Aug. 9, a judge can issue a material witness warrant to arrest and detain him until he testifies.  The special grand jury will not have the power to return an indictment, however, it “may make recommendations concerning criminal prosecutions as it shall see fit.”

President Biden takes action on climate change calling it a ‘code red for humanity’

President Biden declared that the threat of climate change had reached “code red for humanity,” and pledged to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50% by 2030.

President Biden said during a speech in Massachusetts on Wednesday:  “This is an emergency and I will look at it that way. I’ll use my executive powers to combat the climate crisis in the absence of congressional action.” Biden touted several actions the administration is taking, saying that the White House was planning a series of executive orders in the coming weeks to address climate change.

A new $2.3 billion grant program announced Wednesday for state and local communities to build climate-resilient infrastructure. Said the president:  “It is literally – not figuratively – a clear and present danger. The health of our citizens and our communities is literally at stake.”

The speech came after negotiations stalled once again in Congress on including green energy subsidies in a party-line spending bill. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., recently urged his party to delay including tax and climate change provisions within the package until there was a clear picture of the national economy. Without Manchin’s support, the tax is unlikely to become law.

James Harden and the 76ers agree to 2-year, $68.6 million deal with player option

Free agent James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to a two-year, $68.6 million contract with a player option on the second year. ESPN first reported the news, with The Athletic confirming on Wednesday.

Harden opted out of his $47.4 million player option in June in order to return to the franchise on a new deal. According to The Athletic, Harden said he would take a $15 million pay cut for next season and sign a new two-year deal with a player option.

The 76ers acquired Harden in a blockbuster trade deadline deal with the Brooklyn Nets and advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals where they lost to the Miami Heat. The 32-year-old Harden is coming off his 10th All-Star team in 13 seasons, averaging 22 points, 10.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds per game in the 2021-22 campaign.

San Francisco 49ers give QB Jimmy Garoppolo permission to seek trade

The San Francisco 49ers have given quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s agents permission to seek a trade. Garoppolo was cleared to resume practicing as he continues recovering from shoulder surgery.

The 30-year-old has been with San Francisco since 2017, starting in 45 games during that span. Trade rumors have swirled around him since the 49ers drafted Trey Lance with the third overall pick last season. San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said back in May: “I expect at sometime, most likely, he’ll be traded, but who knows. That’s not a guarantee. It went on hold when it (surgery) happened. When he’s healthy we’ll see what happens.”

The 49ers have all but confirmed Trey Lance will be the starting quarterback this season now that they are giving Garoppolo permission to look elsewhere for a new home in 2022.  Lance, who served as the backup to Garoppolo in his rookie season, completed 41 of 71 passes (57.7%) for 603 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions, while rushing 38 times for 168 yards and a touchdown.

Garoppolo completed 68.3% of his passes for 3,810 yards with 20 touchdowns to 12 interceptions last season, recording a 98.7 passer rating and leading the league in yards per completion (12.7). He was second in the league in completion rate (71.1%), and his 8.64 yards per attempt were second in the NFL.

Mo’Nique lands her first Netflix comedy special after settling racial and gender discrimination lawsuit

Oscar and Golden Globe-winning actress and comedian Mo’Nique announced her first Netflix original comedy special for the streamer. In a video posted to Netflix’s Twitter account and the Strong Black Lead initiative account, Mo’Nique said that she is “so excited to share that I’ll be shooting my first Netflix comedy special.” The special is set to film later this year in Atlanta, with additional details to be announced in the coming months.

News of the comedy special comes after a very public, years-long standoff between Mo’Nique and Netflix. Last month, Mo’Nique (legal name is Monique Hicks) and the streaming service agreed to dismiss the lawsuit she brought against them back in November 2019, claiming racial and gender discrimination. No further details of the settlement were disclosed.

The the 54-year-old also reminded viewers that she will be reuniting with friend and director Lee Daniels for the Netflix film ‘The Deliverance’. She said:  “You won’t wanna miss either of them, so y’all stay tuned. Thank y’all my sweet babies. I love us for real.”  Mo’Nique recently reconnected with Daniels, whom she has been at odds with for nearly 13 years since they worked together in 2009 on the Academy Award-winning film Precious. The comedian claimed she was “blackballed” from Hollywood, naming Daniels as one of the culprits, despite winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2010 for her critically acclaimed performance in Precious as the titular character’s abusive mother, Mary.
