Bill Russell’s No. 6 to be retired across NBA following his death

The NBA will honor the legacy of Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell by retiring his No. 6 jersey for all 30 teams. This will make Russell the first player in NBA history to have his jersey retired leaguewide.

Additionally, all NBA players will wear a commemorative patch on the right shoulder of their jerseys during the 2022-23 season, and every court will display a shamrock-shaped logo with Russell’s No. 6 on the sideline near the scorer’s table.

“Bill Russell’s unparalleled success on the court and pioneering civil rights activism deserve to be honored in a unique and historic way,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “Permanently retiring his No. 6 across every NBA team ensures that Bill’s transcendent career will always be recognized.”

Starting with the 2022-23 season, no NBA team will be allowed to issue No. 6 to any player. Players who currently wear No. 6 may continue to do so. According to Basketball Reference, 25 players, including James, Kristaps Porzingis, Alex Caruso, Montrezl Harrell and Lou Williams, wore No. 6 last season.

The NBA said the Celtics’ plans to honor Russell will be announced at a later date. Boston is planning a “separate and unique recognition” for Russell on its uniforms. The NBA previously recognized Russell’s contributions when it named the Finals MVP Award after him back in 2009.

Olivia Rodrigo to induct Canadian Songwriters Alanis Morissette into Hall of Fame

Olivia Rodrigo will get to pay tribute to one of her influential musical icons on September 24 when she inducts Alanis Morissette into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. As part of the induction, Alessia Cara and JP Saxe will perform some of Morissette’s most beloved songs along with Ruby Waters.

“I remember hearing Alanis for the first time when I was about 13. I was in the car with my parents when Jagged Little Pill came on,” Rodrigo said in a statement about the galvanizing impact of Morissette’s music on her. “I heard ‘Perfect,’ I was like, ‘Oh, my God … You can write songs like that?’ I just looked at music and songwriting in a completely different way.”

Rodrigo and Morissette first worked together for the cover of Rolling Stones’ “Musicians on Musicians” series in October 2021, and in May of this year, Rodrigo surprised fans at her Sour tour stop at L.A.’s Greek Theater by bringing Alanis out for a duet on “You Oughta Know.”

The event will take place at Massey Hall in Toronto, and also include induction ceremonies for Bryan Adams, four-time Juno Award-winning songwriter Jim Vallance (Bryan Adams, Aerosmith), songwriter David Foster (Celine Dion, Whitney Houston) and and beloved singer-songwriter Daniel Lavoie (“Ils s’aiment”).

A$AP Rocky Charged With Assault Over Hollywood Shooting

Rapper A$AP Rocky has been charged with two counts of assault with a firearm, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced on Monday afternoon August 15. Rocky is set to be arraigned on Wednesday.

“Discharging a gun in a public place is a serious offense that could have ended with tragic consequences not only for the person targeted but also for innocent bystanders visiting Hollywood,” Gascón said in a statement. “My office conducted a thorough review of the evidence in this case and determined that the addition of a special firearm allegation was warranted.”

It was reported last week that the alleged victim is a form friend, A$AP Relli.

NBA Exec Says Kevin Durant Would Rather Retire Than Play For The Nets

As the standoff between Kevin Durant and Joe Tsai continues, NBA insider Marc Stein reported Monday that one team executive informed him that Durant “was more apt to retire than play again for the Brooklyn Nets.”

“If Durant hasn’t been traded by [training camp], there is a growing expectation in league circles that he will continue trying to cause as much of a ruckus behind the scenes to try to prod the Nets into lowering their asking price at last to facilitate a deal. If it wasn’t apparent by now, he really wants that trade to Phoenix or Miami or maybe even Boston or Philadelphia, no matter what it does to his reputation when he hasn’t played a single game yet under the four-year, $194 million contract extension signed in August 2021.”

The reasons for Durant’s trade demand are still unknown. What we do know is that he has lost trust in the team, and wants both Steve Nash and Sean Marks gone for good. The 2x NBA Finals MVP already issued a them or me ultimatum to Nets team governor Joe Tsai reiterating his trade request and informing Tsai that he needs to choose between Durant or the pairing of general manager Sean Marks and coach Steve Nash.

Tsai responded on a tweet stating the front office and coaching staff have his support and any decision made will be the best interest of the team.

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson to end contract negotiations once regular season starts

Former league MVP Lamar Jackson plans to put a stop on contract negotiations when the regular season starts. After last weekend’s practice, Jackson confirmed that he will no longer be in contract negotiation with the Baltimore Ravens if a deal does not get done prior to the start of week 1 of the regular season.

“We’re coming up to it. It’s coming up,” Jackson said when asked about a hard deadline. “The season’s coming up. We’re going to be good for the season.” Asked if it’s fair to say he wants his contract situation settled by Week 1, Jackson replied, “Yeah, for sure.”

Jackson, 25, provided reporters with no other updates on contract talks. Jackson is not being represented by a agent, which means Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta can only negotiate with him. Jackson is entering his fifth year option, which will pay him $23.016 million this season. If a deal isn’t finalized by March 7, the Ravens would have to place him on a franchise tag to keep him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.

The last quarterback to sign a huge contract extension was the Arizona Cardinals’ Kyler Murray, whose average per year ($46.1 million) and guaranteed money ($160 million) both rank second among quarterbacks. Deshaun Watson tops all quarterbacks with $230 million guaranteed, and Aaron Rodgers ranks first with an average of $50.3 million per season.
