Attempted breach at Cincinnati FBI field office ends with suspect’s death following hours-long standoff

Following an hours-long standoff, a suspect was killed Thursday afternoon in a gunfire exchange with officers in response to the suspect’s attempt to breach the Cincinnati FBI field office building at around 9 a.m.  Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Nathan Dennis said in a news briefing Thursday evening that the suspect ended the standoff by firing at officers; officers returned fire and the suspect died on the scene. No officers were injured in the confrontation. The suspect’s identity has not been confirmed.

Ohio Highway Patrol troopers and local law enforcement agents responded to the alleged breach attempt Thursday morning at the FBI field office, with the suspect allegedly attempting to break in through the visitor screening center. The FBI said the individual fled following an immediate response from special agents, prompting law enforcement to shut down roughly a one-mile stretch of a nearby highway and issue a lockdown warning for residents and businesses in the surrounding area.

Authorities did not give any indication of a possible motive for the breach, and said the incident is still under investigation. The incident came one day after FBI Director Christoper Wray delivered a warning about violent threats circulating online in the aftermath of this week’s FBI search at former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago.

Attorney General Merrick Garland defends DOJ; says he moved to unseal Trump search warrant

On Thursday, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department has filed a legal motion in the southern district of Florida to unseal the warrant and FBI property receipt in the search of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago residence. Garland said he personally approved the search warrant, and that Trump’s counsel was given a copy of the search warrant and FBI property receipt at Mar-A-Lago on Monday during the search.  Said the Attorney General: “The Justice Department has filed a motion in the southern district of Florida to unseal a search warrant and property receipt relating to a court approved search the FBI conducted earlier this week. That search was a premises in southern Florida belonging to the former president.”

Garland added:  “The department filed a motion to make public the warrant and receipt in light of the former president’s public confirmation of the search, the surrounding circumstances and the substantial public interest in this matter. Faithful adherence to the rule of law is the bedrock principle of the Justice Department and of our democracy. Upholding the rule of law means applying the law evenly without fear or favor. Under my watch, that is precisely what the Justice Department is doing.”

Garland also defended the department from the attacks by Republicans about its credibility and independence: “I will not stand by silently when their integrity is unfairly attacked. The men and women of the FBI and Justice Department are dedicated, patriot public servants. Every day they protect the American people form violent crime, terrorism and other threats to their safety, while safeguarding our civil rights.”

Garland said the search warrant was authorized by a court upon probable cause. The FBI carried out the warrant as part of a court-authorized search related to an investigation into potential mishandling of classified documents that ended up at Mar-a-Lago.

Tom Brady absent from Buccaneers practice due to ‘personal reasons’, will return after Aug. 20

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles told reporters that quarterback Tom Brady missed practice Thursday for personal reasons, and will not return to the team until after the Bucs’ second preseason game on Aug. 20 against the Titans.  Bowles said was a planned, 11-day absence from the team, and the 45-year-old quarterback’s break from practice was arranged before camp began.

Bowles said after the Bucs concluded two days of controlled scrimmages against the Miami Dolphins: “Tom has been excused today. … He’s going to deal with some personal things. This is something we talked about before training camp started. We allotted this time because he wanted to get in and get chemistry with the guys with two weeks of training camp, knowing he wasn’t going to play the first two (preseason) games.” He added:  “It’s something he [Brady] needs to handle. We trust him. We talked about it. It was scheduled way before training camp.”

Bowles downplayed any concern when asked if he has any doubt Brady will play in the regular-season opener on Sept. 11 against the Cowboys:  “Obviously, there’s always going to be doubt, but I have a pretty high level of confidence, yes. Per our conversation, I’m not worried.”

Tampa Bay opens the preseason Saturday night against the Dolphins. The Bucs will also travel to Nashville for two days of practice ahead of their game against the Titans. Backup quarterbacks Blaine Gabbert, Kyle Trask and Ryan Griffin will share snaps during Brady’s absence.

Rage Against the Machine cancel their 2022 European tour per doctor’s advice for frontman Zack de la Rocha

Rage Against the Machine have canceled the U.K. and European leg of its reunion tour, after frontman Zack de la Rocha was advised by doctors not to proceed with intensive touring following a recent injury. The band will go ahead with their remaining residency shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The band in a statement:  “Per medical guidance, Zack de la Rocha has been advised that the August and September 2022 U.K. and European leg of the Rage Against the machine tour cannot proceed. It is with great disappointment that we announce this cancellation. Rage Against the Machine will be finishing their run at Madison Square Garden on August 11, 12 and 14 and then Zack must return home for rest and rehabilitation. The flights, travel time, and rigorous schedule in the U.K. and Europe are simply too much of a risk for a complete recovery. We are so sorry to all of our fans who have waited years to see us and hope to Rage again soon.”

de la Rocha has been recovering from a leg injury he sustained during a July 11 performance in Chicago while the band was performing their 1991 hit “Bullet in the Head.” The singer was helped to the side of the stage by crew members and returned to perform the rest of the set while sitting on a stage monitor, and he has been performing shows seated since to not add pressure to his leg.

The band’s next scheduled tour dates are set to begin in February 2023 and run through April in North America.
