Third largest freight rail union rejects tentative agreement to avert a nationwide rail strike

The Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division — the country’s third largest freight rail union — has voted down a tentative agreement brokered by the Biden administration to avert a nationwide rail strike.  The union is the first labor group to reject the offer; according to a statement released Monday, 56% of its almost 12,000 workers turned down the agreement over a lack of time off.

Union President Tony Cardwell in a statement:  “Railroaders are discouraged and upset with working conditions and compensation and hold their employer in low regardRailroaders do not feel valued. They resent the fact that management holds no regard for their quality of life, illustrated by their stubborn reluctance to provide a higher quantity of paid time off, especially for sickness.”

Since four other unions have already approved the deal, so the rejection of the agreement does not signal a strike. However, seven more are scheduled to vote through the middle of November, and if one union were to strike, others could refuse to cross the picket line.

Last month, the Biden administration brokered the tentative deal which gives union members an average 24% pay increase over five years, improved working conditions and caps on what they have to pay for healthcare. The administration worked until the final hour to avert a rail strike that threatened to sever the supply chain, by cutting 40% of long-haul U.S. cargo, and cripple the economy.

Philadelphia Phillies interim manager Rob Thomson signed to a two-year contract extension through 2024 season

On Monday, the Philadelphia Phillies announced that manager Rob Thomson has signed a two-year contract extension that will cover the 2023-2024 seasons. The 59-year-old Thomson took over on an interim basis after Joe Girardi was fired on June 2, and the Phillies surged thereafter, making the postseason for the first time since 2011. The Phillies were 22-29 at the time of Thomson’s promotion to interim manager, and under Thomson, they finished the season with a 65-46 record.

Thomson said in a statement: “I could not be prouder of the group of players, coaches and staff that have made this all possible. This is a great group, one that has shown resiliency and overcome adversity all season to get us where we are today. I am honored and humbled to continue as manager of this club.”

Team president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said: “As time progressed, it became apparent that Rob was the right person to lead this team and our club’s on-field performance over the course of the season certainly reinforced that  His calm demeanor and ability to communicate with players and staff has greatly benefitted the Phillies and we are excited to formally name him our manager going forward. While a great deal of credit for the turnaround of our season goes to the players, Rob’s leadership style has also made a significant impact.”

The Phillies went 14-17 from Sept. 1 forward, but were still able to secure the third NL wild-card berth, going on to sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals in the Wild Card Series. They now go on to face the Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series. Philadelphia’s best-of-five series against the Braves will begin on Tuesday, October 11th.

Carolina Panthers fire head coach Matt Rhule after 1-4 start

The Carolina Panthers announced Monday that they have fired head coach Matt Rhule after a 1-4 start to the 2022 season. Assistant coach Steve Wilks was named interim head coach.

Rhule and the Panthers opened the 2022 campaign with a 26-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns, and the New York Giants beat the Panthers 19-16 in Week 2. The Panthers earned their lone win so far this season when they beat the New Orleans Saints 22-14 on Sept. 14, and the Arizona Cardinals beat the Panthers 26-16 in Week 4.  This past Sunday, San Francisco 49ers beat the Panthers 37-15 in Charlotte, N.C.  The Panthers now have the worst offense in the NFL in terms of total yards. They also totaled the fewest first downs and ranked 24th in points for through five weeks.

Rhule, 47, was hired in 2020 after he served as the head coach at Baylor for three seasons. He also worked as head coach at Temple and as a position coach for the New York Giants. Rhule’s Panthers went 11-27 over the past three seasons, and they have never made the playoffs. Rhule led the Panthers to a 5-11 record in 2020, and in 2021 the Panthers were 5-12.

Wilks was the Panthers’ secondary coach and defensive pass game coordinator to start the season, and he was the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns and University of Missouri in 2019 and 2021, respectively. Wilks spent the 2012 through 2017 seasons as a defensive backs coach, defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the Panthers, and led the Arizona Cardinals to a 3-13 record in 2018, his lone season as an NFL head coach.

Tyler Hubbard drops the music video for “Baby Gets Her Lovin’

Tyler Hubbard has released a new music video for the song “Baby Gets Her Lovin’,” off his six-song project Dancin’ In The Country.  Hubbard describes the song, co-written by Hubbard, Jesse Frasure and Canaan Smith, and co-produced by Hubbard, as a “really fun song I can envision everyone line dancing to.”

The video, shot in Nashville, takes place at a local roller rink and features not only Hubbard’s band, but also a mix of local talent, line-dancers, choreographer Lauren Williamson, and several skaters from Atlanta.  Said Hubbard: “I wanted to shoot a video that was visually unique and different, and that really represented the feeling of the song, so we took it to the skating rink and mixed it up a bit. There is a groove to the music where I could see people skating and line dancing and just really moving with fluidity to the song. We had a big party at the skating rink and had a great time shooting the video. It was special to me too, because I grew up going to the skating rink as a kid – I actually skated all the way through high school. So, it was nostalgic for me to go back to a skating rink, shoot a music video and bring back some of the elements of my childhood that I loved. It also gave me a chance to dust off my skates, which was something I hadn’t done in a while.”

Hubbard is currently on tour in support of Keith Urban’s “THE SPEED OF NOW WORLD TOUR.” For information, go to www.tylerhubbardofficial.com.

Jared Leto to star as the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld in upcoming biopic

Jared Leto will star as Karl Lagerfeld, the iconic fashion designer, in a new biopic.  Lagerfeld, whose career spanned more than 50 years, died in Feb. 2019, and is best known for his role as artistic director of Chanel.  The project has been endorsed by the Karl Lagerfeld fashion house.

Leto will also produce the film, along with Emma Ludbrook, through their production vehicle, Paradox. The project is still in early development, and a filmmaker is not yet attached to direct.  Also serving as executive producers on the film are three of Lagerfeld’s long-time allies:  Pier Paolo Righi, chief executive officer of the Karl Lagerfeld house since 2011; Caroline Lebar, SVP of image and communications at Karl Lagerfeld, and Sébastien Jondeau, who was Lagerfeld’s personal assistant and bodyguard.

Leto said in a statement to Women’s Wear Daily that the movie will likely explore the designer’s “multitude of relationships.”  Said Leto: “Karl had a career that spanned 50-plus years so both personally and professionally he was close to a number of people. I can say we are going to home in on key relationships that convey different parts of his life.  Karl has always been an inspiration to me.”  The actor also described Lagerfeld as a “true polymath, an artist, an innovator, a leader and, most importantly, a kind man. When we came together with the Karl Lagerfeld team, we immediately shared a creative vision of doing a respectful ode to Karl while pushing the artistic boundaries of what a biopic can be.”
