Bob Dylan apologizes to fans for autopen book signatures

Bob Dylan has apologized to fans who bought limited edition copies of his latest book, at a price tag of $599, which had a replica signature rather than an original autograph by Dylan.  The 81-year-old Dylan had signed copies of his book The Philosophy of Modern Song with an autopen, causing an uproar from fans who were initially promised “hand signed” copies of the book, and prompting them to request immediate refunds from publisher Simon and Schuster.

Dylan said in a statement also posted Facebook: “I’ve been made aware that there’s some controversy about signatures on some of my recent artwork prints and on a limited-edition of The Philosophy Of Modern Song. I’ve hand-signed each and every art print over the years, and there’s never been a problem.”  Dylan added that he had a bad case of vertigo in 2019 that continued through COVID-19 pandemic which interfered with his ability to sign books:  “It takes a crew of five working in close quarters with me to help enable these signing sessions, and we could not find a safe and workable way to complete what I needed to do while the virus was raging. So, during the pandemic, it was impossible to sign anything and the vertigo didn’t help. With contractual deadlines looming, the idea of using an autopen was suggested to me, along with the assurance that this kind of thing is done ‘all the time’ in the art and literary worlds.”  Dylan summed up that he had “deepest regrets” for the “error in judgment” and that he wanted to rectify the situation immediately for his fans.

Simon and Schuster has also acknowledged the mistake, and said the company would be offering each purchaser an immediate refund.

Jennifer Lopez announces first new album in 8 years “This Is Me… Now”

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Jennifer Lopez’s album ‘This Is Me… Then,’ the artist announced her first new album in eight years, titled ‘This Is Me… Now.’  In a video shared on social media, Lopez is seen transforming from her 2002 album cover, which saw her dressed in a frilly pink ensemble, into a white corset and black leather jacket.  Said J-Lo: “This is me then” … “This is me now.”

This Is Me… Then was released during Lopez’s first engagement to Ben Affleck in November 2002. The album, which was dedicated to Affleck, drew inspiration from their relationship for songs such as the ballad “Dear Ben,” and Affleck also starred opposite Lopez in the music video for its lead single, “Jenny From the Block.”

In a similar vein as the original album, This Is Me… Now is once again a love letter to Affleck. The 13-track record includes a song titled “Dear Ben Pt. II” but also “Midnight Trip To Vegas,” a nod to the couple’s Sin City wedding in July.

This Is Me… Now will be released in 2023, nearly a decade after Lopez released her last album, A.K.A., in 2014. She has dropped multiple singles, including 2018’s “Dinero” featuring Cardi B and DJ Khaled, 2020’s “Pa Ti” with Maluma, and 2021’s “On My Way (Marry Me)” as part of her romantic comedy film ‘Marry Me.’

Fire on Thanksgiving Day leaves 2 dead, 2 critically injured in Bronx, NY

Officials say that an apartment fire in the New York City borough of The Bronx on Thanksgiving day left two people dead and two critically injured. The blaze broke out on the second floor of a five-story building in the Mount Hope neighborhood of the Bronx around 5:30 a.m., killing a 60-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman.

Police told local NY station WABC-TV that the victims were identified as 20-year-old Odalys Aramboles and 60-year-old Perfecto Aramboles. The other two victims, listed in critical condition at area hospitals, were described as a 62-year-old woman and a 63-year-old woman. An NYPD spokesperson said investigators believe all four victims are related.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but officials say it may have been caused by an electrical fire that started in a hallway closet next to the kitchen.

President Biden calls for assault weapons ban after latest mass shootings

During a Thanksgiving Day visit to Nantucket, Mass. to meet with local firefighters, President Joe Biden called for stricter gun laws in the wake of deadly mass shootings in Colorado, where a gunmen targeted an LGBTQ night club, and in Virginia, where a Walmart supervisor opened fire in an employee break room.

After Biden thanked first responders, he told reporters he would attempt to pass some form of gun control before a new Congress is seated in January, renewing his attempt to ban assault weapons. Said Biden: “I’m sick and tired of these shootings. We should have much stricter gun laws … Look, the idea that we’re not enforcing red-flag laws, period, just based on knowledge, not on parents saying or a loved one saying you should arrest this person now for his own sake, is ridiculous … The idea we still allow semi-automatic weapons to be purchased is sick. It’s just sick. It has no, no social redeeming value. Zero. None. Not a single, solitary rationale for it except profit for the gun manufacturers.”

The shootings in Colorado Springs and Chesapeake are just two of the more than 600 mass shootings so far this year. Other mass shootings occurred throughout the country over the past week; last Sunday, four people in Oklahoma were gunned down at a marijuana farm, an a mother and her three kids were killed in Richmond, Virginia, on Friday.

The president also called-in live to the broadcast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City earlier in the day, saying:  “I want to say thanks to the firefighters, the police officers, the first responders — they never take a break.”  He said he planned to later talk to those serving in the military both here and abroad, adding,”God bless our troops, for real.”

LA Lakers guard Patrick Beverley suspended three games for shoving incident

The NBA announced on Thursday that Los Angeles Lakers guard Patrick Beverley has been suspended three games for “forcefully shoving” Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton, causing him to fall during L.A.’s game against the Suns on Tuesday. In the league’s statement, the suspension was explained as being “based in part on Beverley’s history of unsportsmanlike acts.” The suspension is without pay and will cost Beverley $268,965 in salary.

Immediately after the incident, which occurred with 3:55 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Lakers’ 115-105 loss in Phoenix, Beverley was assessed a technical foul and ejected for charging into Ayton. Following the game, Beverley said he was “for sure” concerned that the league would discipline him for his actions and added that he would accept the punishment that would be handed out. Said Beverley: “Very unprofessional by myself. Definitely could have reacted in a different way … So, yeah, I’m a big boy. I’ll take my lumps however they come.”

Beverley is averaging 4.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 14 starts for the Lakers. As a result of the suspension, Beverley will miss a pair of road games against the San Antonio Spurs on Fri-Sat, as well as a matchup against the Indiana Pacers on Monday.

Parents of former Stanford goalie files wrongful death lawsuit against school

The parents of former Stanford soccer star Katie Meyer have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the University, alleging that the 21-year-old goalie was distressed about facing discipline over an incident from August 2021. Meyer died by suicide in late February. She was a part of the 2019 national champion women’s soccer team, and stopped two penalty shots in Stanford’s 5-4 shootout victory over North Carolina after a scoreless draw.

The civil lawsuit filed Wednesday in Santa Clara County Superior Court says that Meyer spilled coffee on a Stanford football player who allegedly had sexually assaulted a soccer teammate. It also said that Meyer received a formal written notice on the evening of Feb. 28 — the same night she died — that charged her with a “Violation of the Fundamental Standard.” The violation put her diploma on hold a few months before she was supposed to graduate.

In the lawsuit, Meyer’s parents argue that the notice came after-hours while Meyer was “alone in her room without any support or resources,” and says that Meyer responded to the email “expressing how ‘shocked and distraught’ she was over being charged and threatened with removal from the university.” Her parents also allege in the lawsuit that Meyer had “an acute stress reaction that impulsively led her” to take her life, and that Meyer told Stanford employees in November 2021 that she had “been scared for months that my clumsiness will ruin my chances of leaving Stanford on a good note.”

Dee Mostofi, Stanford’s assistant vice president of external communications, said a statement on Wednesday that the school “strongly disagreed” with the lawsuit’s claim that Stanford was responsible in Meyer’s death and hadn’t seen the complaint.
