NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell praises league’s officiating during annual news conference

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell held his annual news conference at the Super Bowl on Wednesday and addressed a wide range of issues, which included praise of the league’s officiating throughout the 2022-23 season.

Said Goodell: “For us, when you look at officiating, I don’t think it’s ever been better in the league. Our officials do an extraordinary job. … Are there mistakes in the context of that? Yes. They are not perfect, and officiating never will. … We may not agree with every TV announcer or every officiating expert, but we think our officials are doing a great job.” Goodell also praised the replay and challenge models to help correct officiating mistakes on the field in real time.

Other topics covered by Goddess was the NFL expanding flex scheduling to include games on Monday night in 2023, and potentially Thursday night in the future. He also noted that this year would be the first Super Bowl to feature two Black starting quarterbacks, saying in part: “There’s such great talent at that position, Black and white. I was talking to Doug Williams about this just last week, the pride he has in seeing the advancement. I think we have 11 Black starting quarterbacks today, and they’re some of the best leaders I’ve ever seen. They’re extraordinary.”

On the topic of the number of concussions widely increasing and the protocols in place, Goodell said: “Any time we can change the protocols to make it safer for our players, we’re going to do that. … I think a reason why concussions went up this year, we had a broader definition, a more conservative definition. We had an increase of 17 percent in evaluations, and if you have more evaluations, you’re going to have more concussions. I think there’s more work to be done in helmets. We think that’s a big area for us to focus on, in how we improve those helmets.”

Olivia Colman, Woody Harrelson and Chlöe Bailey to star in the film “Girl From the North Country”

Olivia Colman, Woody Harrelson and Chlöe Bailey will star in the big screen adaptation of “Girl From the North Country,” a Broadway musical featuring the music of Bob Dylan. The musical originated at the Old Vic in London and had an off-Broadway run in 2018 at the Public Theater before heading to Broadway. However despite positive reviews, the musical struggled to sell tickets post-COVID and closed after its months-long stint. It has since played in the West End, Toronto and Australia.

“Girl From the North Country” will use Dylan’s music library, including “Forever Young,” “All Along the Watchtower” and “Like a Rolling Stone,” to score the Depression-era story about Midwesterners who cross paths at a turning point in their lives.  According to a synopsis, “based in 1934 in Duluth, Minn. during the Great Depression, “Girl From the North Country” centers on a group of wayward travelers as their lives intersect in a guesthouse. Things are spiraling out of control for proprietor Nick Laine (Harrelson), whose wife Elizabeth (Colman) is suffering from dementia. All the while, the bank is foreclosing on their home and their adopted daughter Marianne (Bailey) has a closely guarded secret that no one can explain. But when an escaped convict Joe Scott (Tosin Cole) seeks shelter at the guesthouse, a relationship develops between Marianne and Joe that will change everything for everyone forever.”

Dylan himself has given his approval of the film adaptation. sharing in a statement: “To be associated with Conor is one of the highlights of my professional life. It goes without saying the man is a genius for putting this thing together and I’m thrilled to be a part of the experience. My songs couldn’t be in better hands. The play had me crying at the end. I can’t even say why. When the curtain came down, I was stunned. I really was.”

2023 State of the Union: President Biden urges Democrats and Republics to work together

While dlivering his second State of the Union address Tuesday night from the U.S. Capitol, President Biden called for political unity — and challenged Congress to pass immigration reform, protect abortion rights, ban assault weapons, and help rebuild the middle class.

Entering the House chamber to applause and a standing ovation from both Republicans and Democrats, Biden began his address by recognizing new House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Said Biden: “I start tonight by congratulating the members of the 118th Congress and the new Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy. Mr. Speaker, I look forward to working together.”

During his 80-minute address, Biden touted economic accomplishments during his time as President, despite acknowledging record inflation: “As I stand here tonight, we have created a record 12 million new jobs, more jobs created in two years than any president has ever created in four years,” Biden said, adding, “Here at home, gas prices are down $1.50 a gallon since their peak. Food inflation is coming down. Inflation has fallen every month for the last six months while take-home pay has gone up.”

Biden stressed that “unity” is required between Democrats and Republicans to “finish the job”: “To restore the soul of the nation. To rebuild the backbone of America, the middle class. To unite the country. We’ve been sent here to finish the job. To build an economy from the bottom up and the middle out, not from the top down. Because when the middle class does well, the poor have a ladder up and the wealthy still do very well. We all do well.”

First lady Jill Biden invited multiple guests to Tuesday’s speech, including the Ambassador of Ukraine Oksana Markarova, and RowVaughn and Rodney Wells, parents of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols, the Black man who died last month after he was beaten by a group of Memphis police officers during a traffic stop. Additional guests included Paul Pelosi, husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who was the victim of a politically motivated attack in October, and Brandon Tsay who disarmed a shooting suspect in the Monterey Park, Calif., mass shooting this past month.
