Contaminated waste shipments from Ohio derailment scheduled to resume

According to federal environmental authorities, contaminated waste shipments from the site of the train derailment earlier this month in eastern Ohio will resume Monday to two approved sites in the state. The announcement came a day after the Environmental Protection Agency ordered Norfolk Southern to pause shipments from the site of the Feb. 3 derailment in East Palestine, OH — near the Pennsylvania state line to allow additional oversight measures about where waste was shipped. Some liquid and solid waste had already been taken to sites in Michigan and Texas.

Region 5 administrator Debra Shore of the Environmental Protection Agency said on Sunday that EPA-certified facilities able to accept some of the waste had been identified, meaning that shipments could restart Monday. Shore said that some of the liquid waste will be sent to a facility in Vickery, Ohio, for disposal in an underground injection well, and Norfolk Southern will also begin shipping solid waste to an incinerator in East Liverpool, Ohio,  Additional solid waste disposal locations were being sought, adding: “All of this is great news for the people of East Palestine and the surrounding community, because it means cleanup can continue at a rapid pace.”

No one was injured when 38 Norfolk Southern cars derailed causing a fire to erupt, but officials were worried about a potential explosion due to hazardous chemicals in five of the rail cars, causing them to evacuate the area. It was later decided to release and burn toxic vinyl chloride from the tanker cars. Federal and state officials have repeatedly said it’s safe for evacuated residents to return to the area and that air testing in the town and inside hundreds of homes hasn’t detected any concerning levels of contaminants, and the state says the local municipal drinking water system is safe. However many residents have expressed concerns about what they have been exposed to and how it will impact the future of their families and communities.

Anne Vogel, director of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, said that all of the rail cars – except for 11 cars held by the National Transportation Safety Board – have been removed from the site, which will allow excavation of additional contaminated soil and installation of monitoring wells to check for groundwater contamination.

Atlanta Hawks sign Quin Snyder to five-year deal as new head coach

The Atlanta Hawks announced on Sunday that Quin Snyder has agreed to a five-year deal to become their new head coach. That five-year period includes this season, with Snyder expected to start with Atlanta on Tuesday when they face the Washington Wizards.

Snyder spent eight seasons coaching the Jazz, with Utah reaching the playoffs in six of his eight years at the helm. He achieved the NBA’s best regular-season record during the 2020-21 campaign, and he was a finalist for the NBA’s Coach of the Year award in 2018 and 2021.  However after repeatedly coming up short in the postseason year after year, Snyder resigned after last season.

The Hawks fired head coach Nate McMillan on Tuesday, but unlike Utah they reached the conference finals in the recent past thanks to a stellar 2021 run. However after they were knocked out in the first round last season and struggling to play .500 basketball this season, the Hawks let McMillan go. They have won their two games under interim coach Joe Prunty, and now hold a 31-30 record on the season.

ABC’s ‘The Goldbergs’ to end after 10 Seasons

ABC’s “The Goldbergs” is ending after 10 seasons. The finale for Season 10 is set to air on May 3, and will also serve as the series finale. Series creator Adam F. Goldberg loosely based ‘The Goldbergs’ on his own childhood in the 1980s, with the cast of the show comprised of Wendi McLendon-Covey, Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia, and Sam Lerner, with Patton Oswalt serving as the narrator.

‘The Goldbergs’ is currently the longest-running live-action network comedy on the air, but has dealt with controversies over the past few years. George Segal, who starred as Albert “Pops” Solomon on the show, passed away in early 2021, and series star Jeff Garlin exited the show later that same year following an HR misconduct investigation.

Series star and executive producer McLendon-Covey said in a statement: “It’s been an honor to be part of ‘The Goldbergs’ for the last decade. I’m really proud of what we accomplished with the show, and I’m so lucky to have had such a rewarding experience. I will miss my TV family and every last crew member. Thanks to our brilliant writers for giving us thoughtful story arcs year after year, and for being so collaborative. Thanks to the best EPs in the business. And thanks to all our fans (the Goldnerds) for being so sweet and supportive. My heart is full…But I definitely hope I never see another pair of shoulder pads for the rest of my life.”

Rolling Stones confirm Paul McCartney will appear on a new song from upcoming LP

50+ years after The Beatles and Rolling Stones broke onto the rock-n-roll scene, they are teaming up for the first time for a collaboration on the Stones upcoming new album. Though the groups never collaborated on any studio recordings previously, Paul McCartney and late Beatle John Lennon wrote the Stones’ first hit, 1963’s “I Wanna Be Your Man;” and Jagger was in the studio when the Beatles tracked 1967’s “All You Need Is Love.”

CNN confirmed the new, with a spokesperson for the Stones sharing that Sir Paul McCartney will be “playing bass on a song” on the Stones upcoming album. The Stones’ rep also shut down rumors that the only other fellow surviving Beatle, drummer Ringo Starr, will be joining McCartney — with the rep simply stating, “Ringo isn’t appearing.” As of press time, there was no additional information on the album. The Stones have reportedly been working on the untitled LP in Los Angeles with Grammy-winning producer Andrew Watt. It will be the veteran band’s first new studio album of new songs since 2005’s A Bigger Bang.

The Stones album is also expected to feature their late drummer Charlie Watts, who died in 2021 at 80. Longtime group friend and touring drummer Steve Jordan has said that Watts had recorded his drum parts for a handful of songs before his passing.
