Kelsea Ballerini shares details of divorce from Morgan Evans; Evans responds

Kelsea Ballerini appeared on the Feb. 22 episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast and opened up about the end of her 5 year marriage to Morgan Evans. Ballerini recalled first meeting Evans in March 2016 and that things moved fast, with Evans proposing in December of that same year after just nine months of dating. Ballerini said she swore she would never get married because of her parents’ “nasty” divorce, but the pair wed one year after their engagement in December 2017. Ballerini said things began falling apart when she felt Evans wasn’t prioritizing her, and “there was such a sense of disconnection” between them.

Ballerini noted that she and Evans had a “really beautiful conversation” about their divorce in August 2022, but they haven’t spoken again after their split. Said Kelsea: “I was just really honest. I just said, like, I’ve loved what this has brought in my life and I respect you and I respect me, and because of that I can no longer be in this marriage And I really want to do this together and I really want to, like, honor the good that we’ve experienced by doing this the right way. It was beautiful. We cried. We hugged. It was sweet … And then something changed and … I haven’t talked to him since.” Ballerini admitted that when Evans released his song “Over For You” within weeks after that conversation, it made her “livid.” On Valentine’s Day 2023, Ballerini released her “Rolling Up the Welcome Mat” EP, which chronicles her side of the break-up. Ballerini also said during the podcast interview that she was ready to date again, and confirmed that she is not single, saying she is having “fun” and “just vibing” with “Outer Banks” actor Chase Stokes.

Following Ballerini’s podcast interview, Evans posted a statement to Instagram saying: “It’s really sad for me to see this person, who I spent so much of my life with, and loved with all my heart, saying things that aren’t reality and that leave out what really happened. She knows I’m not the type of guy to speak on those things publicly If this is what she needs to heal, I hope it helps. All I ask is that if you’re on my pages, please don’t be mean. Don’t be mean to Kelsea, don’t be mean to each other. Life’s too short.”

Judge Greg Mathis lands new courtroom show with Byron Allen

Just days after it was announced that ‘Judge Mathis’ would be ending after this season, the former judge for Michigan’s 36th District Court has announced a new show. Warner Bros. TV just announced this week that ‘Judge Mathis’ – along with ‘The People’s Court’ – would be ending after more than two decades on air. ‘Judge Mathis’ will be in its 24th season when it ends, and ‘The People’s Court’ will be at 26 seasons.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Mathis Court With Judge Mathis,’ a new hour-long syndicated show, will be coming this fall. It will be produced by Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group and air on Allen Media’s Justice Central cable channel.  Judge Greg Mathis said in a statement: “For years I’ve proudly watched Byron Allen build a first-class global media empire. After 24 years on the air, I can’t think of a better company to work with to create my next great chapter. Byron and I are both from Detroit, and it’s exciting to see him build the Motown of court programming by bringing together all of my fellow judges from his eight court shows — who are the best of the best.”  Allen added, “Judge Greg Mathis is an outstanding, charismatic, and iconic television host, and we are extremely confident that our eighth and newest court series with Judge Mathis will be very successful for years to come as he joins our outstanding roster of talent.”

‘Judge Mathis’ debuted in 1998, with the show earning the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program in 2018 (it was nominated in the same category in 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2022). Mathis is the longest-serving Black male host on TV and the second longest-serving TV judge, after Judy Sheindlin.

Supreme Court hears arguments on social media legal protections

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the first of two cases that could decide whether social media companies can be held liable for promoting incendiary content which have been allowed to widely circulate on the platforms, including terrorist activities. These rulings could overturn Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, and throw out longstanding federal protections that keep big tech companies from being sued over content published by independent users. The court could fundamentally determine whether the federal statute can still apply if algorithms used by the tech companies are targeting specific users with questionable content, while also spreading terrorist influence to their massive digital audiences.

The case of Gonzalez vs. Google arose out of a lawsuit filed by the family of 23-year-old Nohemi Gonzalez, an American student who was among 130 people killed in a 2015 Islamic State attack in Paris. Filed under the Antiterrorism Act, the lawsuit accuses Google – YouTube’s owner — of allowing barbaric videos to be posted to the platform, which then go viral as algorithms recommend the content to random users. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals previously upheld Section 230, saying the statute protects big tech in cases where it has recommended inflammatory content — so long as the algorithm was being used in the same way for all other content. However, the lower court acknowledged that Section 230 “shelters more activity than Congress envisioned it would” and suggested that U.S. lawmakers move to clarify the scope of the law. The Gonzalez family appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court upon that decision, which agreed to hear the liability case last year. Gonzalez is the first case that the Supreme Court has heard on this topic

In the second case, victims in Twitter vs. Taamneh, which the high court has agreed to take up on Wednesday, could determine whether Twitter, Facebook and Google can be held liable for aiding and abetting international terror groups who have turned to using the platforms. The Twitter case stems from a federal lawsuit filed by the Taamneh family — relatives of Nawras Alassaf, a Jordanian national who was among 39 killed in a 2017 terrorist attack in Istanbul.

Biden administration unveils broad asylum restrictions at U.S.-Mexico border

On Tuesday, the Biden administration released a new rule largely barring migrants who traveled through other countries on their way to the US-Mexico border from applying for asylum in the United States. The new 153-page proposed regulation marks a departure from decades-long protocol, and is the most restrictive policy put in place by the Biden administration to try and manage the US-Mexico border.

According to the text of the regulation, the proposed rule would presume asylum ineligibility and “encourage migrants to avail themselves of lawful, safe, and orderly pathways into the United States, or otherwise to seek asylum or other protection in countries through which they travel, thereby reducing reliance on human smuggling networks that exploit migrants for financial gain.” The rule would generally apply to migrants who unlawfully cross the US-Mexico border, but doesn’t apply to unaccompanied migrant children. The proposed rule will be posted in the Federal Register for a 30-day public comment period and likely take effect in May, when Title 42 is set to expire. The rule is also expected to last for two years. The United States had begun sending migrants from Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua to Mexico under Title 42 and opened a separate program that allows migrants of those nationalities and Haiti to apply to legally come to the United States. Thousands of migrants have already applied.

Brooklyn Nets sign head coach Jacque Vaughn to multi-year contract extension

The Brooklyn Nets announced on Tuesday morning that they are signing head coach Jacque Vaughn to a multi-year contract extension, running through the 2026-27 season. Vaughn took over for former head coach Steve Nash on Nov. 1, and has posted a 32-19 record.

In a statement released by the Nets, general manager Sean Marks praised Vaughn for his impact during his short time as head coach: “Jacque has made an immediate and immeasurable impact on our entire organization since assuming the role of head coach earlier this season. On the court, he’s clearly demonstrated his leadership through his ability to connect and communicate at a very high level while displaying tremendous instincts for the game. As a person, they don’t come any better than Jacque. His character is impeccable, and there is not a better representative for our team and our borough. We are thrilled to have Jacque lead the Nets for years to come.”
