Teen suspect charged with murder in Temple University officer’s shooting death

Police in Bucks County have arrested a teen suspect in the killing of a Temple University police officer on Saturday near the campus in Philadelphia.  At approximately 7 a.m. on Sunday morning, an unidentified 18-year-old white man was taken into custody at a family home in Buckingham Township in relation to the shooting. Temple University’s police association confirmed on Twitter that there had been an apprehension.

Jennifer Griffin, Temple University’s vice president for public safety, said in a statement: “Earlier this morning, an 18-year-old person of interest was taken into custody in connection with last night’s tragic murder of a Temple University Police Officer.”  Griffin identified the officer as Christopher David Fitzgerald, who was hired by the university in October 2021. Fitzgerald was shot while on duty and was pronounced dead at the Temple University Hospital. Griffin said: “Officer Fitzgerald gave his life to selflessly serve and defend this community. The courage and bravery he displayed highlights the day-to-day sacrifice made by our Temple University Police Officers to keep our community safe. This loss leaves an enormous hole in all of our hearts. He was a father, a husband, a son, a colleague, and a friend.”

Temple University president Jason Wingard said in a statement that Fitzgerald was shot while trying to apprehend a robbery suspect at 1700 W. Montgomery Avenue. The suspect fled the scene, according to Wingard, adding: “This loss comes at a time when gun violence continues its horrific impact on our city and our country. Philadelphia and the nation are dealing with an unprecedented epidemic of violence, and the tragedy that took place tonight is a gut-wrenching reminder of our police officers’ daily bravery and sacrifices to protect our students, faculty, staff and community.”

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. wins Daytona 500 in double-overtime

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won the 65th running of the Daytona 500 in double overtime on Sunday night, and also marked the longest running Daytona 500 in history.  The two overtimes pushed the race to a record 212 laps — a dozen laps beyond the scheduled distance, and 530 miles.

Driving a Chevrolet for JTG Daugherty Racing (a single-car team partly owned by former NBA player Brad Daugherty), Stenhouse’s win was the third of his career. His only other victories came in 2017 at Talladega, and the summer race at Daytona.  JTG is the first single-car team to win the Daytona 500 since The Wood Brothers Racing did it with Trevor Bayne in 2011.

The 35-year-old Stenhouse Jr., who hails from Olive Branch, Mississippi, won NASCAR’s biggest race of the season in his first race reunited with crew chief Mike Kelly. Said Stenhouse: “I think this whole offseason Mike just preached how much we all believed in each other. They left me a note in the car that said they believe in me and to go get the job done. Man, this is unbelievable. This was the site of my last win back in 2017. We’ve worked really hard. We had a couple shots last year to get a win and fell short. It was a tough season, but man, we got it done, Daytona 500.”

Reigning Cup champion Joey Logano finished second in a Ford for Team Penske, which won the race last year with Austin Cindric.  Christopher Bell was third in a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing and followed by Chris Buescher in a Ford for RFK Racing and Alex Bowman of Hendrick Motorsports in a Chevrolet.

Brittney Griner signs deal with Phoenix Mercury to return to WNBA

WBNA star Brittney Griner, who was detained in Russia for nearly 10 months on drug charges, has signed a one-year contract with the Phoenix Mercury. According to ESPN and The New York Times, the 32-year-old Griner signed a $165,100 contract with the Mercury on Saturday.

Griner was drafted by the team in 2013 and has played with the Mercury for nine seasons, missing the 2022 season because she was detained in Russia. Before her arrest in Moscow, Griner led the Mercury to the 2021 WNBA Finals after one of the best seasons of her career.

Russian authorities alleged that Griner was carrying vape canisters with cannabis oil when she was arrested at Russia’s Sheremetyevo Airport in February 2022.  Griner’s case became central in the political dispute between the United States and Russia amid the war in Ukraine, and was sentenced to nine years in prison in August.

Griner was then released in a prisoner swap in December 2022, after multiple appeals to the administration of President Biden. Griner was exchanged for Viktor Bout, a notorious Russian arms dealer.
