NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to receive multiyear contract extension

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to receive a multiyear contract extension at next week’s NFL owners meetings in Phoenix. Schefter’s sources told him that the extension will be worth three years (two of Goodell’s previous contracts were for three years, as well.)

Goodell took over the commissioner role in 2006, replacing Paul Tagliabue and had his contract extended in ’09, ’12 and ’17. During this most recent extension, Goodell and the NFL owners accepted a collective bargaining agreement in 2020 with the players that established the 17-game season and 14-team playoff format. Additionally, the league agreed to an 11-year, $113 billion media rights deal in 2021 with CBS, NBC, Fox, ESPN and Amazon.

It is likely that this extension will be the 64-year-old Goodell’s last. who is just the fifth commissioner in league history, following Elmer Layden (1941-46), Bert Bell (1946-59), Pete Rozelle (1960-89) and Tagliabue (1989-2006).

Amanda Bynes hospitalized and placed on psychiatric hold

Amanda Bynes has been hospitalized and placed on a psychiatric hold after reportedly roaming around the streets of downtown Los Angeles naked. According to TMZ, Bynes was found not wearing clothes and wandering the streets alone in the early morning on Sunday, March 19. The 36-year-old Bynes herself reportedly waved down a car, telling them that she was coming down from a psychotic episode before calling 911 herself.

Bynes was taken to a nearby police station, where mental health officials determined she needed to be placed on a 5150 psych hold – an involuntary hold that lasts 72 hours but can be extended if needed. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness Los Angeles, a patient can be placed on a 5150 psych hold if they are considered to be a danger to themself or others or have a grave disability, such as being unable to provide for their own food or clothing. Sources close to Bynes told TMZ that she will likely receive treatment for several days.

In 2013, Bynes was placed under a conservatorship and remained under the supervision of her parents for nine years until May 2022, when a judge agreed to terminate the conservatorship at Bynes and her parents’ request. Bynes has been retired from acting since 2010, but had been set to reunite with several former All That cast members at ’90s Con’ in Connecticut this past weekend. However, Bynes pulled out of the event at the last-minute due to an “unknown illness.”

Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen issues statement after violent assault

Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen issued a statement after being violently assaulted last week outside of a hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The band was in town following a performance the previously evening with Mötley Crüe at the Hard Rock Live in nearby Hollywood, FL.

Per a Ft. Lauderdale police incident report, the assailant, 19-year-old Max Edward Hartley, was arrested shortly after the incident and has been charged with four counts of criminal mischief; one count of misdemeanor battery; and one count of aggravated battery.  Hartley allegedly charged at Allen, who hit his head after being knocked to the ground. The assailant also apparently attacked a woman who tried to interfere in the incident, hitting her repeatedly and dragging her by the hair.

In his statement, Allen said: “Thank you everyone for your overwhelming support. Your love and prayers are truly helping. My wife Lauren [Monroe] was thankfully not with me at the time of the incident. We are together now, and working on recovering in a safe space [and focused on] healing for everyone involved. We ask you to join us in our effort to move from confusion and shock to compassion and empathy. We understand this act of violence can be triggering for so many people. To all of the fans, veterans and first responders in our global community, we are thinking of you all. Together with love, we can all get through these difficult times.”

Allen joined Def Leppard in 1978, and famously lost his left arm in a serious automobile accident in 1984, but has remained the band’s drummer ever since.

Manhattan district attorney ensures employee safety from protests after claims of impending Trump arrest

Responding to former President Donald Trump calling for protests over his claims of an incoming arrest, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said his office will “not tolerate” intimidation.  On Saturday, Trump posted a message to Truth Social stating that he expects to be arrested on Tuesday, and telling his supporters “PROTEST. TAKE OUR NATION BACK.”

D.A. Bragg said in an email to about 1,600 employees at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office that he is coordinating with the New York Police Department and Office of Court Administration in preparation of any security risks. Bragg wrote in an email shared by Politico reporter Erica Ogden on Twitter: “We do not tolerate attempts to intimidate our office or threaten the rule of law in New York. Our law enforcement partners will ensure that any specific or credible threats against the office will be fully investigated and that the proper safeguards are in place so all 1,600 of us have a secure work environment.”

Trump expects to be arrested in relation to the ongoing Manhattan case over his alleged hush money paid to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign. Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen — who allegedly executed the hush money payments to Daniels — had testified against the former president last week, and has testified and written in his tell-all book that Trump directed him to make payments to Daniels. Daniels herself met with the DA on Wednesday, answering questions about the case and agreeing to make herself available as a witness for further questioning if needed.
