Poland becomes first NATO member to give Ukraine fighter jets

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said Thursday that his country plans to give Ukraine around a dozen MiG-29 fighter jets — making Poland the first NATO member to fulfill the Ukrainian government’s urgent requests for warplanes. President Duda said Poland would hand over four of the Soviet-made warplanes “within the next few days” and that the rest needed servicing and would be supplied later (the Polish word he used to describe their number can mean between 11-19).

Duda said of the aircrafts: “They are in the last years of their functioning but they are in good working condition,” adding that Poland’s air force would replace the planes it gives to Ukraine with South Korea-made FA-50 fighters and American-made F-35s.  He did not say whether other countries would be making the same move, although Slovakia has claimed it would send its disused MiGs to Ukraine. Polish government spokesman Piotr Mueller said some other countries (who he did not name) with MiGs also had pledged them to Kyiv.

NATO allies have expressed hesitancy to share fighter jets, despite pleas from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Western supporters.  Ukraine had several dozen MiG-29s before Russia’s invasion that it inherited in the collapse of the Soviet Union, but it’s unclear how many of them remain in service after more than a year of fighting.Duda made the announcement during a joint news conference in Warsaw with the visiting Czech president, Petr Pavel.

11 big banks pledge $30 billion rescue package for First Republic

On Thursday, eleven of the biggest banks in the U.S. announced a $30 billion rescue package for California-based First Republic Bank, in an effort to prevent them from becoming the third bank to fail in less than a week. First Republic serves a similar clientele as Silicon Valley Bank, which failed Friday after depositors withdrew about $40 billion. First Republic — which had deposits totaling $176.4 billion as of Dec. 31 — was facing a similar crisis.

JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup and Wells Fargo have agreed to each put $5 billion in uninsured deposits into First Republic. Meanwhile Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs would deposit $2.5 billion each into the bank. The remaining $5 billion would consist of $1 billion contributions from BNY Mellon, State Street, PNC Bank, Truist and US Bank. The group of 11 banks confirmed in a statement that other unnamed banks had seen large amounts of withdrawals of uninsured deposits, which are those that exceed the $250,000 level insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The banks said in their statement: “The actions of America’s largest banks reflect their confidence in the country’s banking system.”  U.S. banking regulators also issued a statement in support of the bank rescue package. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael Hsu, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg said: “This show of support by a group of large banks is most welcome, and demonstrates the resilience of the banking system.”

On Monday, First Republic’s shares dropped more than 60% even after the bank said it had secured additional funding from JPMorgan and the Federal Reserve. The bank’s shares were down as much as 36% on Thursday, but rallied after reports the rescue package was in the works and closed up nearly 9%.  The collapse last week of Silicon Valley Bank was the second biggest bank failure in U.S. history after the demise of Washington Mutual in 2008. New York-based Signature Bank was shuttered two days.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers officially release running back Leonard Fournette

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced they have officially cut ties with running back Lenoard Fournette, releasing him after the start of the new league year at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Fournette was not released with a post-June 1 designation to spread out the cap hit; the team officially opened up $3.5 million in cap space with the release of Fournette.

Fournette signed with the Bucs in 2020 and was the lead running back in Tampa Bay for three seasons while playing with the quarterback who recruited him, Tom Brady.  The 28-year-old recorded 668 yards on 189 carries in 2022, averaging just 3.5 yards per attempt. The running back also caught 73 passes for 523 yards with three touchdowns, bringing him up to 1,191 yards from scrimmage on the season. A No. 4 overall pick of the 2017 draft, Fournette has twice rushed for 1,000 yards throughout his career.

NY Mets closer Edwin Díaz expected to miss season with torn patellar tendon in knee

New York Mets GM Billy Eppler announced the team will likely be without All-Star closer Edwin Díaz for the entire 2023 MLB season, after suffering a full-thickness tear of the patellar tendon in his right knee.

The injury occurred during Puerto Rico’s on-field celebration following their win over the Dominican Republic in Wednesday night’s World Baseball Classic game. The Puerto Rican players were jumping together in the infield when Díaz collapsed to the ground and quickly reached for his right leg; he did not put any weight on the leg before being taken off the field in a wheelchair.

The Mets said that Díaz underwent surgery Thursday afternoon, with Eppler telling reporters that the organization will not “update Edwin’s timeline for a while,” but noted that generally recovery from patellar tendon surgery takes eight months. Eppler added that Diaz was “in good spirits” ahead of the surgery, which will be performed by Dr. David Altchek.

Díaz, who turns 29 on March 22, signed a five-year deal worth $102 million last offseason — the largest reliever contract in history in terms of both total guarantee and average annual value. Díaz is coming off a historic season that saw him post a 1.31 ERA (297 ERA+) and a 6.56 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 62 innings. He also finished with 32 saves over the course of 61 appearances.

John Mulaney’s new special ‘Baby J’ to debut on Netflix in April

John Mulaney’s latest Netflix standup special, titled “John Mulaney: Baby J,” will premiere April 25th. The special marks Mulaney’s third Netflix standup special – following 2015’s “The Comeback Kid” and 2018’s “Kid Gorgeous.” He also worked with the streamer on the Emmy-nominated children’s variety special “John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch” in 2019.

Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson reuniting for new Apple TV+ series

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are reuniting on screen for a new Apple TV+ comedy from creator David West Read — this time, playing versions of themselves. Read’s credits include “Schitt’s Creek” and Broadway’s “& Juliet.” He’s part of the “Schitt’s Creek” team that won the outstanding comedy Emmy in 2020, and was also nominated for a writing Emmy that year.

Read’s untitled 10-episode half-hour comedy will feature McConaughey and Harrelson — along with their families — attempting to live together on McConaughey’s Texas ranch. Apple TV+ calls the new show “a heartfelt odd couple love story revolving around the strange and beautiful bond between Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.”

McConaughey and Harrelson starred together in HBO’s anthology crime drama “True Detective” in 2014, as Louisiana State Police detectives Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, respectively. Both actors were nominated for lead drama actor in their roles.

Apple TV+ and Skydance also unveiled Read’s new project, “The Big Door Prize,” at the SXSW festival in a world premiere event. Starring Chris O’Dowd, The Big Door Prize will debut with the first three episodes on Wednesday, March 29, followed by one new episode weekly every Wednesday through May 17.

Queen co-founder and guitarist Brian May knighted by King Charles III

Queen co-founder Brian May was knighted by King Charles III, making him the first member of the legendary rock group to receive the honor. King Charles bestowed the honor by placing a ceremonial sword on May’s shoulder during the Investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace, officially making May a “Knight Bachelor.” The 75-year-old May shared an image of the moment on his Instagram with the caption “no words.”

May performed on the roof at Buckingham Palace in 2002 for Queen Elizabeth’s golden jubilee, and in 2005 he was given the title of “Commander of the Order of the British Empire.” The knighthood means that May will now be referred to as “Sir Brian May.”
