Ed Sheeran previews new single ‘Eyes Closed’

Ed Sheeran is gearing up for his new album release, the last of Sheeran’s ‘mathematical’ albums (since each of their titles references a math equation).  As a tease, Sheeran shared a snippet of his new single “Eyes Closed” on TikTok, where he performed an acoustic version of the single. In the short clip divided into three screens, Sheeran is dressed in a T-shirt and sneakers while he plays guitar and sings the single’s chorus.

Sheeran posted on social media when announcing the album release: “I had been working on Subtract for a decade, trying to sculpt the perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear vision of what I thought it should be. Then at the start of 2022, a series of events changed my life, my mental health, and ultimately the way I viewed music and art … I felt like I was drowning, head below the surface, looking up but not being able to break through for air. As an artist, I didn’t feel like I could credibly put a body of work into the world that didn’t accurately represent where I am and how I need to express myself at this point in my life. This album is purely that. It’s opening the trapdoor into my soul. For the first time I’m not trying to craft an album people will like, I’m merely putting something out that’s honest and true to where I am in my adult life.”

In addition, Sheeran’s North American run of dates on his Mathematics tour kicks off May 6th at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX., before wrapping up on September 23rd with a performance at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

Judge blocks release of Tyre Nichols video as Justice Dept. launches probe of Memphis police

On Wednesday, a court order Wednesday delayed the release of about 20 hours of footage from the fatal beating of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols at the hands of Memphis police officers. A Memphis judge ruled nearly 20 hours of additional footage and internal documents related to the city’s investigation into the death of Nichols cannot be released until the lawyers for the five former Memphis police officers charged in his death have seen the new video. The delay came on the same day the U.S. Justice Department said it would review the Memphis Police Department and the use of specialized units within law enforcement in the wake of Nichols’ killing in January.

The court order read: “The court orders that the release of videos, audio, reports, and personnel files of City of Memphis employees related to this indictment and investigation (to include administrative hearings, records and related files) shall be delayed until such time as the state and the defendants have reviewed this information  The release of this information shall be subject to further orders of this court and, in the public interest, will be ordered as soon as possible.” Body camera footage released last month showed multiple officers beating, pepper spraying and using a stun gun on Nichols after a traffic stop and sparked protests in Memphis and around the country. Nichols died three days after the beating on Jan. 10.

The Justice Department also said on Wednesday that its Community Oriented Policing Services office will conduct a review of certain policies and practices by the Memphis police at the request of Mayor Jim Strickland and Police Chief Cerelyn Davis. The review will cover “policies, practices training, data and processes related to the MPD’s use of force, de-escalation and specialized units.”

Justice Department finds Louisville Police uses excessive force, discriminated against Black people

The Justice Department said Wednesday that it found the that Louisville Metro Police Department and Louisville/Jefferson County Metro government violated the Constitution and federal law in various practices, and dealing with the Black community. Following an investigation launched in April 2021, the DOJ said it has entered an agreement with the government and police department to address many of the issues under federal law that prohibits officers from engaging in a pattern or practice of conduct that deprives people of rights.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement: “This unacceptable and unconstitutional conduct erodes the community trust necessary for effective policing. It is also an affront to the vast majority of officers who put their lives on the line to serve Louisville with honor. And it is an affront to the people of Louisville who deserve better.”

The department found the police had a pattern of using excessive force, police dogs and tasers; conducted searches based on invalid warrants; made unlawful stops and searches; discriminated against Black people in its enforcement activities; violated protected free speech activities; and discriminated against people with behavioral health disabilities.

The DOJ’s findings are separate from cases related to the death of Breonna Taylor, who was shot in her home by Louisville police instituting a no-knock warrant. The Justice Department had previously filed charges against four former officers involved in that 2020 incident.

Jaguars release CB Shaquill Griffin, will save $13.1 million in cap space

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced on Wednesday they have officially released veteran cornerback Shaquill Griffin. The release of Griffin clears $13,147,059 in salary cap space, however, the Jaguars reportedly made an attempt to trade Griffin before announcing his release Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Griffin  spent his first four seasons in Seattle before joining the Jaguars during the 2021 offseason on a three-year, $40 million contract. A back injury limited Griffin to just five games during the 2022 season, where he struggled and allowed a 125.0 passer rating. After he was placed on injured reserve in October, Griffin was unable to return before the end of the season and was replaced in the lineup by a couple players before Darious Williams took on the role.

Calvin Ridley publicly apologizes, says gambling on NFL was ‘worst mistake of my life’

Calvin Ridley was officially reinstated by the NFL on Monday following an indefinite suspension that lasted one year for gambling on NFL games. Now in a letter posted on The Players’ Tribune on Wednesday, the Jaguars wide receiver apologized and opened up about his gambling suspension that caused him to miss the entire 2022 NFL season. Ridley also said that he had been battling depression and anxiety, which led him to betting on games.

Ridley wrote that when he gambled on the game, he was “in a dark moment” and “made a stupid mistake.” He said: “I f—ed up … I’m not here to sugarcoat anything. In 2021, I made the worst mistake of my life by gambling on football.” Ridley said he battled anxiety and was depressed, particularly as he dealt with injuries. Ridley played through 2020 with a broken foot and dealt with bone spurs during his first two seasons in the league with the Falcons.

Ridley said it was because of his love of the game that he wanted to explain his story about what happened when he gambled. He said:“I was just doing it [gambling] to root on my boys, basically. I didn’t have any inside information. I wasn’t even talking to anybody on the team at the time. I was totally off the grid. Whenever people ask, ‘What were you thinking?’ The only answer I can give is, ‘I wasn’t … When you’re depressed, you’re not thinking about anything in the future. You’re just trying to get through the day.” He described his meeting with NFL investigators as “probably the worst day of my life …But honestly, maybe I had to go through all of it. Maybe I had to hit rock bottom so I could get healthy.”

Now that he is reinstated, Ridley is set for his first season with the Jaguars after he was traded from the Falcons to Jacksonville in November. He thanked the Jaguars, and said: “Football saved my life. It’s still my purpose. I still love it, maybe now more than ever.”

Prime Video has shared the official trailer for the new spy thriller ‘Citadel’, starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden, and executive produced by the Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame) and showrunner David Weil.

Citadel is described as a ‘global adventure where spies from several countries came together for the ultimate mission.’   An official synopsis reads: “Eight years ago, Citadel fell. The independent global spy agency — tasked to uphold the safety and security of all people — was destroyed by operatives of Manticore, a powerful syndicate manipulating the world from the shadows. With Citadel’s fall, elite agents Mason Kane (Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Jonas) had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped with their lives. They’ve remained hidden ever since, building new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts. Until one night, when Mason is tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), who desperately needs his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies embark on a mission that takes them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore, all while contending with a relationship built on secrets, lies, and a dangerous-yet-undying love.”

Citadel will premier with its first two episodes on Prime Video on April 28, followed by a new episode released every Friday through May 26.  Take a look at the trailer – here.
