Pres. Biden visits Selma, AL to make case for voting rights on anniversary of ‘Bloody Sunday’

President Joe Biden traveled to Selma, Alabama, to commemorate the 58th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday.” Biden spoke at the Edmund Pettus Bridge — where in 1965 hundreds of civil rights marchers were attacked by police. Met by public outrage, the event marked a turning point and led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Biden has spoken on voting rights often, and in his most recent State of the Union address he said: “In America, we must protect the right to vote, not suppress that fundamental right. We honor the results of our elections, not subvert the will of the people. We must uphold the rule of the law and restore trust in our institutions of democracy.”

Said Biden in his remarks at the bridge: “They forced the country to confront the hard truth and to act to keep the promise of America alive.”   The president said he believed voting is a “fundamental right,” but remains under assault decades later from conservative Supreme Court justices, state lawmakers and election deniers. Biden repeated his plea for Congress to pass new voting legislation named for the late Georgia Rep. John Lewis, who was beaten and suffered a skull fracture during “Bloody Sunday.” Democrats attempted last year to update the 1965 Voting Rights Act with a bill named after Lewis, but failed to gain enough support to break the Senate filibuster.

Biden ended his speeches saying “extremism will not prevail …. Silence, as the saying goes, silence is complicity. And I promise you, my administration will not remain silent. I promise you.” The president then marched across the bridge with civil rights advocates after his speech, the first time he did so since entering the White House.

White Sox pitcher Mike Clevinger will not be disciplined after domestic violence investigation

Nearly six weeks after launching a domestic violence investigation into MLB announced in a statement on Sunday that they will not issue any discipline against 32-year-old White Sox pitcher Mike Clevinger. Clevinger spent the 2022 season with the Padres and signed a one-year, $8 million deal with Chicago in December.

The announcement comes nearly six weeks after the league launched a domestic violence investigation on Clevinger. In January, Clevinger was accused by Olivia Finestead, the mother of one of his daughters, of physical, emotional and verbal abuse. Finestead said that she had been talking to domestic violence investigators since last summer, claiming that Clevinger had choked her in June and later slapped her in a hotel room, as well as  throwing used chewing tobacco at their child.

In a statement, the league said that it interviewed more than 15 people and reviewed “thousands of electronic communication records,” and noted the next steps Clevinger would take in lieu of any sort of disciplinary action: “As part of his path forward, Mr. Clevinger has voluntarily agreed to submit the evaluations by the joint treatment boards under the collectively bargained policies, and to comply with any of the boards’ recommendations. MLB will continue to make support services available to Mr. Clevinger, his family, and other individuals involved in the investigation.”

Texas Tech suspends basketball coach Mark Adams for racially insensitive comments

Texas Tech University announced Sunday that men’s basketball coach Mark Adams has been suspended due to an “inappropriate, unacceptable, and racially insensitive comment” he made to a player last week. The 66-year-old Adams was reprimanded after the athletic department learned of the comments. He “immediately addressed this with the team and apologized.”

According to a press release from Texas Tech, Adams met with a player to discuss them being more receptive to coaching. During the discussion, Adams made a reference to a Bible verse that discusses “workers, teachers, parents, and slaves serving their masters.”  The statement read in part: “On Friday, Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt was made aware of an incident regarding a coaching session between Adams and a member of the men’s basketball team. Adams was encouraging the student-athlete to be more receptive to coaching and referenced Bible verses about workers, teachers, parents and slaves serving their masters. Adams immediately addressed this with the team and apologized.”

Athletics director Kirby Hocutt was informed of the incident on Friday and made the decision to immediately suspend Adams, who is in the second year of his contract. The school announced that Hocutt will conduct an investigation into how Adams interacts with his staff and players; it’s unclear how long he will remain suspended.

Adams succeeded former coach Chris Beard who left the Red Raiders in 2021 for Texas. Adams is on a five-year contract reportedly worth more than $15 million. Texas Tech will face West Virginia in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday.

Ashley McBryde releases the single ‘Light On In The Kitchen’

Ashley McBryde has shared her latest single, “Light on in the Kitchen,” which McBryde co-wrote with Connie Harrington and Jessi Alexander. McBryde posted on Instagram: “I’m noticing now how big a difference such seemingly small comforts have made in my life. Things as simple as “sure honey” from a voice I need to hear it from, or just walking into the kitchen for a drink in the middle of the night. How comforting that warm glow has always been… Leave a light on y’all. Big hugs. #LightOnInTheKitchen”

Says McBryde of the song: “While writing this, we were all able to look back and remember the women in our lives who comforted us, gave us advice and made sure we knew we had a place to go. Writing this song showed me how necessary that simple comfort had been …“I sent it to the important women in my life, and they reminded me that they still leave the kitchen light on for me, just like when I was growing up,” she adds. “Knowing someone, somewhere is thinking of you in that way can get you through a lot. And it’s a bonus that now we get to say, ‘I love you’ or ‘I’m thinking of you’ by saying ‘The light’s on for ya.’”

“Light on in the Kitchen” is the lead single from McBryde’s upcoming fifth studio album. The as-yet-untitled project is the follow-up to her 2022 concept record Lindeville, and 2020’s Never Will.
