Jeremy Renner to open up about snowplow accident in Diane Sawyer interview

Jeremy Renner is speaking out publicly for the first time about the snowplow accident that almost took his life. The “Hawkeye” star was severely injured and left in critical condition on New Year’s Day when he was crushed by a 7-ton snowcat snowplow outside his Reno, Nevada home while trying to protect his nephew. He was left with blunt chest trauma and more than 30 broken bones.

Renner will open about the scary incident with ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer in the special Jeremy Renner: The Diane Sawyer Interview – A Story of Terror, Survival and Triumph, set to air April 6 at 10 p.m. EDT on ABC.  ABC News released a promo of the sit-down interview between Renner and Sawyer where he opens up about the snowcat accident that left him in critical condition on New Year’s Day. Renner recounted how he sustained his life-threatening injuries, saying: “I’d do it again .. Yeah, I’d do it again, ’cause it’s going right at my nephew.”

The actor confirmed he was conscious after the accident and remembers the pain, telling Sawyer: “All of it … I was awake through every moment.” The trailer includes audio from the 911 call after Renner’s accident. Renner candidly speaks about his determination to live:  “I chose to survive, this is not going to kill me, no way. I’ve lost a lot of flesh and bone in this experience, but I’ve been refueled and refilled with love and titanium.”

Renner tweeted an update on his recovery Sunday, alongside a video of himself using a specialized treadmill, captioning the post: “I now have to find OTHER things to occupy my time so my body can recover from my will.”

Murder conviction of Adnan Syed reinstated by Maryland appeals court months after he was freed

A Maryland appeals court has reinstated the murder conviction against Adnan Syed, roughly six months after Baltimore prosecutors provided new evidence in the 1999 killing of Hae Min Lee, due to a lower court’s violation of the victim’s family right to attend the hearing to vacate the conviction.

The 41-year-old Syed, whose conviction was made famous by the podcast “Serial,” had his conviction tossed out by a circuit court and the state’s attorney’s office. He had been serving a life sentence for the past 23 years — more than half his life — since his arrest in 1999.

Syed was released from prison in October after Baltimore City State Attorney Marilyn Mosby said DNA evidence supported his Syed’s innocence. Lee’s family filed an appeal, arguing that they were not properly notified of the efforts to release Syed, and the Maryland appeals court ruled in their favor, stating that officials failed to provide sufficient notice for Lee’s family to attend the hearing.

Tuesday’s decision is seen as a procedural issue, and there is no reason to believe Syed will be sent back to prison. A new hearing will be held regarding the evidence to vacate Syed’s conviction, but the previous murder charges have been reinstated in the interim. The prosecutor has indicated that there is evidence pointing to other suspects and that the investigation is ongoing.

GOP House committee subpoenas Antony Blinken over Afghanistan withdrawal

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul subpoenaed Secretary of State Antony Blinken, to demand the official records on the department’s Dissent Channel warning against a speedy withdrawal from Afghanistan.  The Dissent Channel is a confidential channel operated by the State Department and used by foreign affairs officials and other government employees. Employees may use the channel to share dissenting opinions about the government or matters of foreign affairs.

The cable from the State Department may reveal what the department’s employees in Kabul shared with Blinken and the Biden administration nearly a month before troops were withdrawn. McCaul’s press release said the record was first requested in August 2021, after U.S. troops and staff were evacuated.

Signed by 23 staffers from the U.S. Embassy in Kabul on July 13, 2021, the Dissent Channel cable warned the State Department that the Taliban was rapidly advancing in Afghanistan, forecasting a situation the Afghan military would be unable to handle. McCaul said in a statement that Blinken has refused to provide the cable despite multiple concessions being offered on McCaul’s behalf: “We have made multiple good-faith attempts to find common ground so we could see this critical piece of information. Unfortunately, Secretary Blinken has refused to provide the Dissent Cable and his response to the cable, forcing me to issue my first subpoena as chairman of this committee. The American people deserve answers as to how this tragedy unfolded, and why 13 U.S. service members lost their lives.” McCaul said concessions included reviewing the documents by camera and having the names of staffers who signed the cable redacted.

Blinken testified to the Foreign Affairs Committee last week and during his testimony he said he was preparing the relevant information the committee is seeking.

Cleveland Guardians and 2B Andrés Giménez agree to 7-year, $106.5M contract extension

The Cleveland Guardians and All-Star second baseman Andrés Giménez have agreed to a seven-year, $106.5 million contract extension.  According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the deal begins in 2024 and includes a 2031 club option, and covers three arbitration years and potentially five free-agent seasons if the team picks up the 2031 option.

An international free agent in 2015, the Venezuelan native began his MLB tenure with the New York Mets during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. The Mets traded him after the season to Cleveland alongside infielder Amed Rosario and minor leaguers Isaiah Greene and Josh Wolf for shortstop Francisco Lindor and starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco.

Giménez struggled as a part-time player in 2021, hitting just .218 in 68 games. However the 24-year-old broke out as one of Cleveland’s top players in 2022, earning All-Star and Gold Glove honors last year after hitting .297 (.837 OPS) with 17 home runs, 69 RBI and 20 stolen bases. He ranked fifth among all American League players in defensive WAR (wins above replacement) at 2.4, and finished sixth in American League Most Valuable Player voting and Gimenez’s strong defensive play also earned him his first Gold Glove.

Cleveland’s 2023 season kicks-off on Thursday, March 30th on the road against the Seattle Mariners.

Wizards’ Bradley Beal under police investigation after incident with fan in Orlando

Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal is under investigation by police in Orlando, Florida after a confrontation with a fan stemming from a gambling loss.  NBA spokesman Mike Bass said the league is “aware of the report and in the process of gathering more information.”

According to police reports obtained by ESPN, the 29-year-old NBA star was exiting the court inside Amway Center following a loss on the road to the Orlando Magic last Tuesday, March 21st and walking toward the locker room when an attendee shouted at him.  The unidentified man told Beal he lost $1,300 on a bet due to the athlete’s performance that night, which allegedly prompted Beal to approach the man’s friend and “swatted his right hand toward him,” which forced the man’s hat off his head.  Beal can be heard on video footage of the incident telling the man he takes his job as an NBA player seriously, which seemingly led to the outburst. Additionally, the report said that the man apologized to Beal and did not mean to offend him.

The official complaint against Beal states that charges will be filed with the state attorney’s office. According to the report, the complaint claims that “probable cause exists” to charge the NBA with “simple battery.” However, as of Tuesday, no charges have been filed.

In a statement the Washington Wizards said, “We are aware of the situation regarding Bradley Beal in Orlando but won’t have further comment until we’ve gathered more information.”
