Buffalo Bills announce Damar Hamlin has been cleared to return to football

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane said on Tuesday that safety Damar Hamlin has been medically cleared to resume football activities, just three months after going into cardiac arrest on an NFL field. Beane said that Hamlin had seen three separate specialists over the offseason, who all agreed that the player can return to play: “He is fully cleared. He’s here. He’s in a great headspace to make his return.”. Bills head coach Sean McDermott said the team is happy that Hamlin will be back: “We’re super excited for Damar. He’s moving forward one step at a time here. He’s been cleared from a physical standpoint. We’ll provide all of the mental help we can from a mind, body and spirit standpoint so just happy for him that he’s been able to check some of those boxes to this point and we’re moving forward taking it one day at a time.”

Hamlin later held a news conference announcing his intention to return to the NFL this upcoming season. During his speech to the media on Tuesday, Hamlin detailed that the exact diagnosis doctors gave him is commotio cordis, which is when something hitting an athlete’s chest directly over the heart can cause cardiac arrest and ventricular fibrillation. It is the leading cause of death of youth athletes across all sports.

The 25-year-old Hamlin has not played football since collapsing on the field at Paycor Stadium during Buffalo’s Monday Night Football game against the Bengals on Jan. 2nd. Trainers administered CPR on Hamlin on the field, and in the ambulance on the way to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Hamlin awoke two days later, and was eventually discharged from the hospital nine days after the incident.

Alanis Morissette shares cover version of ‘Yellowjackets’ theme ‘No Return’

Grammy-winning artist Alanis Morissette has released the new single, No Return” (Extended Version), a reworked version of the theme song for Showtime’s mystery-thriller series Yellowjackets.  Yellowjackets, starring Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci, and Tawny Cypress, centers on a girls’ soccer team who must survive in the wilderness after a plane crash. The show takes place in two timelines — in 1996 immediately after the crash, and 25 years later in 2021.

Written by Yellowjackets composers Craig Wedren and Anna Waronker, Morissette’s version of “No Return” debuted during the opening credits in the fourth episode of Yellowjackets Season 2. The original theme song will returning in the following episode 5, with Morissette’s version to appear at other points during the season.

The 48-year-old Morissette shared in a statement to Variety: “I love the original version of “No Return,” It’s just a perfect song. It was a little daunting to be asked to reinterpret it but I see parallels between Yellowjackets and my perspective while songwriting: the sheer intensity, that going for the jugular with no fear around going for the profane … I’ve strived my entire career to support the empowerment of women and sensitives and see the world through the female lens, and what’s so wonderful about this show is that each character is allowed to be dynamic and complex as opposed to oversimplified, reduced versions of women.”

The estate of Chris Cornell settles lawsuit with members of Soundgarden

On behalf of the Estate of Chris Cornell, Vicky Cornell (Cornell’s widow) and the surviving members of Soundgarden — Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron and Ben Shepard — have settled their lawsuit, which will allow the release of new music the band had been working prior to the singer’s death from suicide in 2017. A statement from both parties reads: “The reconciliation marks a new partnership between the two parties, which will allow Soundgarden fans around the world to hear the final songs that the band and Chris were working on. The two parties are united and coming together to propel, honor and build upon Soundgarden’s incredible legacy as well as Chris’s indelible mark on music history — as one of the greatest songwriters and vocalists of all time.” Settlement terms were not disclosed.

In 2019, Cornell filed a lawsuit against the remaining members of the band and their manager over the rights to several unreleased Soundgarden songs, claiming the tracks entitled her to “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in royalties. Vicky Cornell claimed she was offered a “ludicrously low” buyout offer and called for the group’s holdings to be professionally audited.  Later in a 2021 complaint, Cornell stated that she attempted to settle the matter by offering the surviving bandmembers first $4 million each for their collective interests in the Soundgarden partnership, and when that offer was declined, she offered $7 million each. The filing also claimed that the group had refused to share data regarding the partnership’s value. In response, the surviving bandmembers released a statement which read, in part, “This dispute has never been about money for the band. This is their life’s work and their legacy.”  The case was finally settled earlier in 2021 as a judge ruled that there was no evidence to suggest that the band’s surviving members are withholding royalties from Cornell.

After splitting in 1997, Soundgarden reunited in 2010. The group toured regularly for the next seven years and released a comeback album, King Animal, in 2012. Last year, Vicky Cornell confirmed that the Cornell estate is planning on releasing a second volume of covers that Chris had recorded before his death; a release date is yet to be announced.
