Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson announces GOP presidential bid

Former Gov. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas announced on Sunday that he will run for president in the 2024 election. Hutchinson, 72, revealed that he would run for the office in an interview with ABC’s “This Week”, with a formal announcement to come later in April. Hutchinson said: “I have made a decision, and my decision is I’m going to run for president of the United States. The reason is, I’ve traveled the country for six months, I hear people talk about the leadership of our country. I’m convinced that people want leaders that appeal to the best of America, and not simply appeal to our worst instincts.”

Hutchinson said the current political landscape in the United States “one of the most unpredictable political environments” he has seen in his lifetime, adding, “So my message of experience, of consistent conservatism and hope for our future in solving problems that face Americans, I think that that resonates.”

Hutchinson is adding his name to the growing list of Republican candidates going head-to-head with former President Donald Trump for the GOP nomination. Hutchinson said in his interview with This Week that Trump’s indictment in New York “adds to the unpredictability” and he believes the former president should drop out of the race: “The office is more important than any individual person … And so for the sake of the office of the presidency, I do think that’s too much of a sideshow and distraction and he needs to be able to concentrate on his due process and there is a presumption of innocence.”

The former governor also clarified that he considers himself a member of the “non-Trump lane” rather than the “anti-Trump lane,” saying that he urged Republicans to “let the system work” as Trump defends himself from criminal prosecution.

Death toll rises to 32 after tornado outbreaks throughout South and Midwest

The major storm system that traveled through the South and the Midwest beginning on Friday has killed at least 32 people. The National Weather Service has confirmed at least 31 tornadoes across 9 states on Friday and Saturday, with more than 28 million people across the South and Midwest under a tornado watch going into Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service field office in Nashville, thirteen of the deaths occurred in Tennessee, where an EF-2 tornado struck Wayne and Lewis counties on Friday night, later also hitting McNairy and Hardin counties. Nine of the deaths were in buildings that were destroyed down to their foundations in McNairy County, according to McNairy County Sheriff Guy Buck, who added that a tornado crossed the entire county and stayed on the ground for over 30 miles causing “every kind of damage imaginable.”

The NWS confirmed that a “catastrophic” tornado moved through the metro area of Little Rock, Arkansas, in Pulaski County Friday afternoon. According to preliminary NWS information, the EF3 tornado had winds up to 165 mph and a path length spanning 20-25 miles. Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr. tweeted: “Property damage is extensive and we are still responding.”

President Joe Biden said in a statement Sunday that he has been in touch with officials in affected states, including Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana and Delaware, and that he had directed his administration “to help with immediate needs and long-term rebuilding.”  Biden said: “While we are still assessing the full extent of the damage, we know families across America are mourning the loss of loved ones, desperately waiting for news of others fighting for their lives, and sorting through the rubble of their homes and businesses. There’s nothing we can do to heal the hole left in the hearts of far too many families who lost loved ones this weekend, but we will be there every step of the way as they rebuild and recover.”

Daniil Medvedev defeats Jannik Sinner to claim 2023 Miami Open men’s singles title

In a 1-hour, 34-minute match, Daniil Medvedev captured his fourth ATP title of the year on Sunday, defeating Jannik Sinner 7-5, 6-3 for the Miami Open men’s singles title.  With the victory at Miami, Medvedev has now won 24 of his last 25 matches. His only loss has come against world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in last week’s final at Indian Wells.

After his three-hour win late Friday night over Alcaraz in the semifinals, the 21-year-old Italian Sinner ran out of stream against Medvedev. He was visited by an ATP trainer midway through the first set Sunday; and during the changeover at 4-3, Sinner received a packet of powder that he dumped into a water bottle to drink. Sinner said during the post-match ceremony: “Woke up this morning not at my best – a little bit sick. Thanks for the support. You gave me a lot of energy. Unfortunately, I couldn’t play at my best.’’

The victory is the Russian Medvedev’s first title on American soil since the 2021 U.S. Open, when he defeated Novak Djokovic’s in his bid for a Grand Slam.

LSU wins first NCAA championship defeating Iowa 102-85

The LSU Tigers defeated Iowa 102-85 in the 2023 women’s NCAA Tournament championship game Sunday in Dallas, winning their first national basketball title in school history.

The victory makes head coach Kim Mulkey the first women’s coach to win national championships at two different schools. Said Mulkey: “Coaches coach a lifetime and this is the fourth time I’ve been blessed. Never in the history of LSU basketball, men or women, has (anybody) ever played for a championship.”  Mulkey now has the third-most titles of all time behind Geno Auriemma’s 11 and Pat Summitt’s eight. Mulkey has never lost in a championship game. She said:  “My tears are tears of joy .. I’m so happy for everybody back home in Louisiana.”

Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, the Associated Press national player of the year, had one of the greatest individual performances in NCAA Tournament history, finishing with 30 points. The guard from Iowa set the NCAA record for points in a tournament — 191 — passing the 177 that Sheryl Swoopes scored in 1993 when Texas Tech won the title.

The 102 points scored by LSU broke the previous high for a championship game, surpassing the 97 points that Texas scored against Southern California in 1986. Jasmine Carson scored 22 points, Alexis Morris added 21 and Angel Reese had 15 points and 10 rebounds for LSU (34-2). Reese, who was honored as the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four, said after the game: “It’s no one-man show around here. When I go down, the next man is up. Every single time, every time I go out or Alexis (Morris) goes out, everybody always comes to step up.”

Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said: “They really played well, they were ready to go. They did a great job. I’m just so proud of my team. This is brutal, it’s really tough to walk out of that locker room today and not be able to coach Monika (Czinano) and McKenna (Warnock) again. I’m very thankful for the season we had and don’t want to take anything away from that.”
