Florida Gov. DeSantis sending National Guard and other personnel to Texas border

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will send more than 1,000 personnel from Florida, including 800 Florida National Guard members, to the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas. In addition to the National Guard members, DeSantis is sending 101 Florida Highway Patrol troopers, 200 Florida Department of Law Enforcement officers, 20 Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers, 20 emergency management personnel, five aircraft, two mobile command vehicles, 17 drones and 10 boats.

DeSantis said in a statement that the move is needed to help Texas deal with an influx of immigrants and added that “the impacts of Biden’s Border Crisis are felt by communities across the nation, and the federal government’s abdication of duty undermines the sovereignty of our country and the rule of law. At my direction, state agencies including law enforcement and the Florida National Guard are being deployed to Texas, with assets including personnel, boats and planes. While Biden ignores the crisis he created, Florida stands ready to help Texas respond to this crisis.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sent a letter to 49 other state governors on Tuesday asking for assistance in dealing with the surge of migrants at his border due to the end of Title 42 — a COVID-19-era regulation allowing the federal government to immediately expel migrants. The COVID-19 pandemic emergency regulations ended earlier this month. Biden administration officials have said the initial influx after the end of Title 42 has subsided, but Abbott said in his letter: “with the end of Title 42 expulsions, President Biden’s own administration estimates that at least 150,000 migrants are waiting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border and enter our country illegally. The flood of illegal border activity invited by the Biden Administration flows directly across the southern border into Texas communities, but this crisis does not stop in our state. Emboldened Mexican drug cartels and other transnational criminal enterprises profit off this chaos, smuggling people and dangerous drugs like fentanyl into communities nationwide.”

President Biden cuts foreign trip short to meet Speaker McCarthy on raising debt ceiling

President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy met Tuesday afternoon to discuss a way to raise the debt ceiling. McCarthy, R-Calif., said after exiting the meeting that the sides remain “far apart .. but it is possible to get a deal by the end of the week.”  McCarthy acknowledged a “lot of work to do in a short amount of time and unfortunate that we are where we are,” but said, “If this is where we were in February … I’d be very optimistic that we’d get this done right away.”

Biden said there was an “overwhelming consensus” among the leaders that defaulting on the debt was not an option. That outcome would threaten a recession, devastate retirement accounts, force layoffs, and prompt a blow to the nation’s reputation around the world. Biden called Tuesday’s meeting ‘good and productive,’ and expressed confidence that a default could be averted.  The White House said the meeting was “productive and direct” and that Biden hopes to check in with the leaders by phone while traveling overseas this week and meet with them again when he returns.  The President is leaving for Japan on Wednesday to attend a summit of the Group of Seven major industrial countries; the White House said Tuesday that Biden would cut his trip short and will return Sunday.

Failure to reach an agreement to lift the borrowing limit threatens the first-ever default on the nation’s $31.4 trillion debt, an outcome that could prove catastrophic for the U.S. economy and upend the political landscape.

76ers fire head coach Doc Rivers after losing Eastern Conference semifinals

The Philadelphia 76ers have fired coach Doc Rivers, just two days after they were eliminated from the playoffs in a Game 7 loss to the Celtics. Rivers had just told reporters on Sunday that he expected to return to the 76ers next season; he signed a 5-year, $40 million contract with the 76ers in 2020, and remained under contract for another two seasons.

76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey said in a news release on Tuesday: “Doc is one of the most successful coaches in NBA history, a future Hall of Famer, and someone I respect immensely. We’re grateful for all he did in his three seasons here and thank him for the important impact he made on our franchise. After having the chance to reflect upon our season, we decided that certain changes are necessary to further our goals of competing for a championship.”

Rivers, 61, took over as the Sixers’ head coach in October 2020. He led the 76ers to a 154-82 record in three seasons with the franchise. The 76ers went 20-15 in the postseason under Rivers, but failed to advance past the Eastern Conference semifinals. During the 2022-23 campaign, Rivers led the 76ers to 54 regular-season wins — the most since 2000-01. They swept the Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the playoffs before the Boston Celtics beat them in seven games to advance to the Eastern Conference finals.

In 24 years as a head coach in the NBA, Rivers owns a 1,097-763 regular-season record. He is 111-104 in the postseason, including his 2008 title run with the Boston Celtics. Rivers also coached the Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Clippers, leading those teams to the playoffs in 19 of his 24 seasons.

Sam Hunt shares the video for his new single ‘Outskirts’

Sam Hunt is sharing the new video for his latest song, “Outskirts,” which you can take a look at here.

The visuals for “Outskirts,” directed by Tim Mattia, shows Hunt reflecting that while he can distract himself in the city, being back in a small town brings back all his memories of a former flame. It also cuts between shots of Hunt and his band performing the song in a warehouse. A press statement for the video “captures a ‘day in the life’ of main street in a rural town. Shown through the eyes of a truck driver passing through, the video captures the heartbeat of a small town as the driver takes in all of the characters from and events that unfold throughout the day.”

“Outskirts”, written by Hunt with Zach Crowell, Jerry Flowers, and Josh Osborne, lends its name to Sam’s upcoming “Summer On The Outskirts” tour, which kicks off July 6 in Hartford, Connecticut and continues across the country with stops in Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Detroit, Mountain View, New York City, Orange Beach, Raleigh, and St. Louis.

Corey Taylor announces new LP ‘CMFT2’ and solo tour dates

Corey Taylor has shared details for his new solo studio album, CMFT2, which will be available September 15th. CMF2 is the follow-up Taylor’s 2020 solo debut CMFT, which featured the No. 1 Billboard mainstream rock single “Black Eyes Blue” and streaming hit “CMFT Must Be Stopped” featuring Tech N9ne and Kid Bookie. The LP also hit No. 6 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums charts.

The album’s first song, “Beyond,” is available now along with the official video, shot at a remote location within California’s Mojave Desert. Directed by Dale “Rage” Resteghini, the visual finds Taylor in the desert with members of the band and the Cherry Bombs, while being surrounded by different versions of himself from through the years, before ending with a live performance.  Says Taylor of Beyond: “I originally wrote it as an aggressive romantic song, but I’m also looking at it now as a kind of ‘come together’ song. Bringing the masses together, and letting them know that I want my music to take them beyond what they may think about me. Maybe they’ve had a misconception about me. It’s not exactly a calling card, more like throwing the bat signal up and being ‘alright, let’s turn everything on its head.’ It’s almost a dual threat, because now I look at it from two standpoints.” You can take a look at the video for Beyond – here.

Taylor also announced his 2023 tour in support of the new album, featuring special guests Wargasm, Oxymorrons, and Luna Aura on select dates. The 28-city tour kicks off on August 25th at Fillmore Auditorium in Denver making stops across the US in Detroit, Orlando, Dallas and more before the final headline show in Los Angeles at The Wiltern on October 5th. General on-sale ticketing will begin Friday, May 19th at 10 am local time at CoreyTaylor.com.
