The Weeknd reverts back to his birth name Abel Tesfaye on social media

The Weeknd recently revealed he would be working on his final album under his stage name, but hinted he was also thinking of releasing music under a new name. Now, the singer has changed his name on Twitter and Instagram to his birth name, Abel Tesfaye (although his handles on both social media platforms remain The Weeknd).

Tesfaye told W Magazine in an article last month: “I’m going through a cathartic path right now. It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”

Fans of The Weeknd (and/or Abel) will soon be able to watch his new show on HBO, the Sam Levinson-directed series “The Idol.”

3 killed, 6 wounded in Farmington, New Mexico shooting

Three people were killed and six others injured (including two officers) after a gunman opened fire in Farmington, New Mexico. Officers then shot and killed the alleged gunman, police confirmed. Farmington is located in northern New Mexico, only about 15 miles south of the Colorado border.

Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe said in a video message that the 18-year-old suspect fired at least three different weapons, including an AR-style rifle.  At 10:57 a.m., the unidentified suspect opened fire near Dustin Avenue and Ute Street ,with officers finding a”chaotic scene” upon arriving. The Farmington Police Department, New Mexico State Police and U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the scene. Farmington Police Department deputy chief, Baric Crum, told reporters earlier Monday that the suspect was firing into the neighborhood as he “roamed” up to a quarter of a mile, randomly firing “at whatever entered his head to shoot at,” shooting at least six houses and three cars.

Three “civilian victims” were killed, Farmington police said, in addition to one suspect who was “confronted and killed on scene.” Farmington Police said on social media that one Farmington police officer and one member of the state police were also wounded; they were taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center and listed in stable condition. The Farmington officer was treated and released; the state police officer remains in the hospital and is doing well.

Suspect in custody after baseball bat attack on staffers of Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly

Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly said on Monday a man with a baseball bat walked into his office in Fairfax, Virginia and asked for him before assaulting two members of his staff with a baseball bat.  According to a statement released by the Democratic lawmaker: “This morning, an individual entered my District Office armed with a baseball bat and asked for me before committing an act of violence against two members of my staff … “The thought that someone would take advantage of my staff’s accessibility to commit an act of violence is unconscionable and devastating … The individual is in police custody and both members of my team were transferred to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.” Connolly was not working in that office on Monday.

Fairfax City Police confirmed in a tweet that a suspect is in custody and the victims are being treated for injuries that are not life-threatening. Spokesperson Sgt. Lisa Gardner said police received a call about the attack at Connolly’s district office at about 10:50 a.m.  Officers got to the office within five minutes and located the suspect in the office, Gardner said. He was taken into custody quickly without further incident.

Connolly represents Virginia’s Fairfax County-based 11th District in the Washington suburbs. He’s currently serving his eighth term in Congress

Churchill Downs suffers eighth horse fatality as Rio Moon is euthanized

Rio Moon, a 3-year-old colt, became the eighth horse to die at Churchill Downs in less than three weeks at the home of the Kentucky Derby. According to notes in the Equibase chart for the sixth race, Rio Moon “suffered a catastrophic injury to his left foreleg a few strides after the wire.” The race notes said that Rio Moon was euthanized Sunday at the Louisville, Ky., track.   Rio Moon, ridden by Martin Garcia and trained by Dale Romans, made six career starts and earned $11,621. Churchill Downs did not immediately respond when asked for a comment about the colt’s death.

Churchill Downs had confirmed that two horses — Freezing Point and Chloe’s Dream — were euthanized after sustaining leg injuries in races on the Kentucky Derby undercard on May 6, and five others were euthanized after training and racing incidents at the track in the days leading up to the Derby.  In the wake of the incidents, Churchill Downs suspended trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.  Joseph trained two horses — Parents Pride and Chasing Artie — that collapsed and died at Churchill Downs. Officials also scratched Joseph-trained Lord Miles from the Derby.

In a statement from Churchill Downs after the two horses were euthanized on May 6, they said it was working continuously to “improve upon the highest industry standards,” but acknowledged there was “more to be done and we will rigorously work to understand what caused these incidents and build upon our existing data, programs and practices … While each incident reported has been unique, it is important to note that there has been no discernable pattern detected in the injuries sustained.”

The horse deaths prompted widespread criticism, and a joint investigation was launched by track officials, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority.  The Preakness Stakes — the second leg of horse racing’s triple crown — will be held Saturday at Pimlico Race Coure in Baltimore. The Belmont Stakes — the final triple crown event — will be held June 10 at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.
