Woman who wrote children’s book on grief after husband’s death charged with his murder

A Utah mother who published a children’s book on grief following her husband’s death last year has now been accused of poisoning him with a lethal dose of fentanyl. Court documents show that 33-year-old Kouri Richins faces charges including aggravated murder in connection with the death of her husband, Eric Richins, 39, who was found dead at the foot of their bed on March 4, 2022. Prosecutors allege that Eric Richins was poisoned by a lethal dose of fentanyl on the night of March 3, 2022, according to the charging document. Kouri Richins has also been charged with three counts of possession of drugs with intent to distribute. Her next hearing is scheduled for May 19.

According to the probable cause statement, Kouri Richins allegedly told police following his death that they were celebrating her closing on a house for her business that night and she “made Eric a Moscow Mule in the kitchen and brought it to their bedroom where Eric consumed it while sitting in bed.”  She then said she went to sleep with one of their children, and when returning to the bedroom around 3 a.m. she found him “cold to the touch.”  An autopsy determined that Eric Richins died from a fentanyl overdose, and that the level of fentanyl in his system was five times the lethal dosage. The medical examiner indicated the fentanyl was “illicit fentanyl,” not medical grade, and that it was likely ingested orally.

Kouri and Eric Richins were married for nine years and had three young sons together, according to his obituary. While appearing on a “Good Things Utah” segment last month on Salt Lake City’s KTVX to promote her new children’s book, Kouri Richins said her husband died unexpectedly, and that his death “completely took us all by shock … My kids and I kind of wrote this book on the different emotions and grieving processes that we’ve experienced last year. [I am] hoping it can kind of help other kids deal with this and kind of find happiness some way or another.”

Jury finds Donald Trump liable for battery and defamation in E. Jean Carroll case

A Manhattan jury unanimously found former President Donald Trump liable for battery and defamation in the sexual assault case brought by E. Jean Carroll. The jury found, beyond a preponderance of evidence, that Trump unlawfully touch Carroll without her consent in a New York City department store in the 1990s. However, it did not reach a unanimous agreement that he raped Carroll. For Trump to face punishment, the jury had to unanimously determine that Carroll’s claims had been proven by a preponderance of evidence, a lower bar of scrutiny than beyond a reasonable doubt.

According to NBC News, after receiving instructions on the law and a 10-question verdict from by U.S. District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan, the jury entered deliberations shortly before noon. The six men and three women on the jury were charged with determining if Trump sexually assaulted Carroll or defamed her by publicly accusing her of lying about the alleged incident. The jury ruled that Trump must pay $2 million in compensation and $20,000 in punitive damages for battery. For defamation, the jury awarded Carroll $1.7 million for reputational repair and $1 million in compensatory damages and $280,000 in punitive damages.

Judge Kaplan had given Trump until Sunday afternoon to determine whether or not he would take the stand in the rape case, which he declined to do. Carroll had alleged that Trump raped her in a department store dressing room in the 1990s. Two witnesses for the prosecution testified that Carroll told them about the assault shortly after it happened; and Jessica Leeds and Natasha Stoynoff testified that Trump had similarly sexually assaulted them in separate incidents. Though Trump did not testify in the case, video of his deposition by Carroll’s attorneys was made public on Friday.

Trump’s defense team has repeatedly claimed that the case against the former president is politically motivated. In closing statements on Monday, Trump attorney Joe Tacopina said the jury must disregard its feelings about Trump and focus on the facts of the case: “People have very strong feelings about Donald Trump. There’s a time and a secret place to do that. It’s called a ballot box during an election.” On his Truth Social social media page earlier on Tuesday, Trump reasserted his dismissal of the allegations against him:  “In the meantime, the other side has a book falsely accusing me of rape, and is working with the press. I will therefore not speak until after the trial, but will appeal the unconstitutional silencing of me, as a candidate, no matter the outcome!”

Morgan Wallen cancels 6 weeks of concerts to go on strict vocal rest

Morgan Wallen has been forced to cancel six weeks of upcoming tour dates and festival appearances, as well as his ACM Awards performance, after being placed on a strict six-week vocal rest. Wallen revealed on Tuesday he had re-injured his voice; he had already canceled several shows after losing his voice before a performance at Vaught Hemingway Stadium at the University of Mississippi on April 23, but returned to performing last week in Florida following an initial 10-day vocal rest.

Wallen posted a video message on Instagram alerting fans of the unfortunate news: “They told me I re-injured my vocal cords and that I have vocal fold trauma. Their advice is that I go on vocal rest for six weeks, so that’s what I’m going to do. They told me that if I do this the right way that I’ll get back to 100%. They also said if I don’t listen and keep singing, that I’ll permanently damage my voice. So, for the longevity of my career, this is just the choice I had to make.” Wallen told his fans: “I hate it, but I love you guys and I appreciate all the support that you always give me and I’ll see you soon and I’ll be back better than ever. God bless you.”

Wallen’s six-week stretch of vocal rest would run until June 20, meaning he would miss shows in Hershey, PA; East Rutherford, NJ; Austin, TX; Houston; Atlanta; Panama City, FL; Myrtle Beach, SC; Virginia Beach, VA; Pittsburgh, PA; Philadelphia. An announcement from Wallen’s publicist said that new tour dates will be announced “imminently,” at which point anyone holding tickets will have a 30-day refund window, open at point of purchase, if they can’t or do not want to attend the rescheduled show. The statement said that Wallen is working to reschedule any missed festival appearances to 2024. The singer will also miss his appearance at the Academy Country Music Awards on Thursday.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ opens to $114M debut

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” the conclusion to Marvel’s trilogy, earned $114 million in its domestic box office debut.  The film ranks as the second-biggest opening weekend of 2023, behind “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” with $146 million.  “Guardians 3” debuted just behind its predecessor, 2017’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” which opened with $146 million in earnings – but ahead of the first “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which opened to $94 million in 2014.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ added $168 million at the international box office from 52 markets, bringing its global earnings to $282 million. Imax and Dolby accounted for 40% of the film’s opening weekend ticket sales, with Imax alone delivered $10.7 million in North America and $25 million globally.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” ended the four-week box office reign of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which fell to second place with $18.6 million from 3,909 theaters. “Evil Dead Rise” took third place with $5.7 million, and at No. 4 “Are You There God, it’s me Margaret?” added $3.38 million in its second weekend of release. Finally, the romantic comedy “Love Again” starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas landed in fifth place, earning just $2.4 million from 2,703 venues.

Vince Vaughn set to return for ‘Dodgeball 2’ sequel film

Deadline reports that a sequel to the hit 2004 comedy Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story is officially in the works, with Vince Vaughn set to star in the project. Vaughn will star in and produce the sequel, which will be written by Jordan VanDina (‘The Binge’).

As of press time, it was not revealed if any of the other stars from the original film (Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Justin Long, Stephen Root, Alan Tudyk, Joel David Moore, Chris Williams, Missi Pyle, Gary Cole, Jason Bateman, and William Shatner), will return for the sequel.

2004’s Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, with the film grossing almost $170 million in its time. Talk of a ‘Dodgeball’ sequel has been rumored for years, with Vaughn telling The Hollywood Reporter in December 2022 that he and Ben Stiller were open to doing a sequel film.  Said Vaughn at the time: “You would just want to make sure going into Dodgeball that it feels like a nice continuation and a story that could stand on its own. I think for all of us if it feels right and it’s funny, it would be something to go back to, and if it’s not, it’s just another idea getting kicked around.”

Mammoth WVH’s release the new single ‘Like A Pastime’

Mammoth WVH have dropped a new track off the upcoming album Mammoth II, titled “Like a Pastime.”

Wolfgang Van Halen says of the new song: “It centers around a 4/4-time signature, but with a polyrhythm on top. I was teaching my fiancé what a polyrhythm is, and I stumbled upon this idea. The kick drums are accentuating it. It’s certainly one of my favorites and a completely different vibe than anything on the first album.”  Polyrhythms are a commonly used technique in the world of progressive metal, and Wolfgang teased earlier this year that metal bands such as Meshuggah served as a big inspiration for this second album: “On the next album, there actually is some Meshuggah-inspired stuff. Through the lens of Mammoth though, so not as super heavy.”

Mammoth II will be available Aug. 4, and can be pre-ordered here.
Check out the lyric video for Like a Pastime here.
