Eric Church is among the new owners of the Charlotte Hornets

North Caroline native Eric Church is a member of the buyers group who just purchased a majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets basketball team. Chairman and former NBA great Michael Jordan has reached an agreement to sell his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets to the unnamed group led by Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall. Plotkin, who acquired a minority stake in the Hornets in 2019, has been an alternate governor on the NBA Board of Governors since 2019.

The buyers group includes several Charlotte-based investors, including Church and rap superstar J. Cole. Other minority owners of the Hornets include Chris Shumway, Dan Sundheim, Ian Loring, Amy Levine Dawson and Damian Mills.

If the deal is approved by the NBA Board of Governors, Jordan will retain a minority ownership share of the team . The deal also includes acquiring ownership of Greensboro Swarm (NBA G League) and Hornets Venom GT (NBA 2K League), as well as managing and operating Spectrum Center.

Church is an avid fan of his native sports teams. Last year, he made headlines after canceling a concert on his Gather Again Tour to attend an NCAA Final Four game between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Duke Blue Devils with his family. The decision received mixed reactions from fans on social media. However, the country star made it up to ticket holders by offering a free show last fall in return.

Prince Harry and Megan Markle end their Spotify podcast deal

Prince Harry and Megan Markle’s lucrative deal to produce podcasts for Spotify has ended. The audio streaming giant and the production company Archewell Audio, launched by the Sussexes, said in a joint statement: “Spotify and Archewell Audio have mutually agreed to part ways and are proud of the series we made together.”  The royals’ deal with Spotify was reported to have been made in 2020 for a reported $25 million.

The couple produced just one series, “Archetypes,” a podcast launched in August 2022 hosted by Markle that sought to “investigate, dissect, and subvert the labels that try to hold women back,” under their Archewell Audio podcast imprint. A representative for Spotify said the decision meant that Archetypes would not be renewed for a second season, as was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Archetypes saw celebrities including Serena Williams, Mariah Carey, Mindy Kaling, Constance Wu, Jameela Jamil and Paris Hilton featured, and won the top podcast award at the People’s Choice Award in Los Angeles.

2 killed, 3 injured in shooting at Beyond Wonderland Festival in Washington

Two people were killed and three others injured after police said a shooter began firing “randomly” into a crowd at a Washington state campground that was hosting people attending the Beyond Wonderland Festival, an electronic dance festival at the Gorge Amphitheatre in Quincy, Washington. The suspect was among those injured after being shot in a confrontation with law enforcement.

Kyle Foreman, public information officer with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office. said during a press conference that authorities received the first report of the shooting shortly before 8:30 p.m. at the camping area a few hundred yards from the Gorge Amphitheater, where thousands of people were attending the festival. The Gorge is near the small city of George, about 150 miles east of Seattle. After the initial shots were fired, the suspect started moving through the campground and “continued to shoot randomly into the crowd” until he was eventually confronted by police and taken into custody, Foreman said. A public alert had advised people that there was an active shooter in the area, but Foreman said there was no effort to evacuate the festival.

The festival continued following the shooting and did not end until early Sunday morning. Organizers of the Beyond Wonderland electronic music festival said on social media that Sunday’s events at the Gorge were canceled. The music festival made the announcement on social media: “We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the local authorities and staff who acted quickly to manage the situation. “Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences go out to the family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic event.”
