1 officer and suspect dead, 1 officer wounded after Mississippi hostage standoff

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety said that two Mississippi police officers were shot and one died Thursday during a standoff that started as a hostage situation in a home.

According to The Associated Press, an unnamed person was holding a second unidentified person hostage inside a home in Brandon, a suburb of Jackson, Mississippi’s capital city. The hostage situation reportedly began as a domestic dispute between a woman and man, and Police Chief Wayne Dearman said they first received a call of the situation at around 1:45 a.m. local time.

Several law enforcement agencies responded during the eight-hour standoff, and after talking for more than an hour with the suspect, the department’s SWAT team got into the house and rescued the hostage. The officer killed was from the police department in Madison. The injured officer is from the Brandon Police Department. State police spokesperson Bailey Martin said in a statement that the suspect also was shot and killed at the home. It was not immediately clear whether police shot and killed the suspect, or the person killed himself.

The Department of Public Safety did not immediately release the names of the officers or the suspect. .

3 residents of partially collapsed Iowa building remain unaccounted for

Davenport Police Chief Jeff Bladel said during a media briefing on Thursday that three residents of an Iowa apartment building that partially collapsed on Sunday are still unaccounted for. Authorities had said five people were missing earlier this week, but Chief Bladel said that two of them have since been contacted and are safe. One moved out a month ago and was found in Texas, and the other was found locally.

Shortly before 5 p.m. on Sunday, the six-story building partially collapsed. The city of Davenport has since released documents that show the building’s owner was warned that the parts of the structural engineering of the building was unsafe.  An engineer’s report dated May 24 read that patches in the west side of the building’s brick façade “appear ready to fall imminently” and could be a safety hazard to cars or passersby. The engineer’s report also detailed that window openings were insecure, with openings “bulging outward” and “poised to fall.”  The report states that inside the first floor, unsupported window openings help “explain why the façade is currently about to topple outward … The brick façade is unlikely to be preserved in place, but it can be brought down in a safe, controlled manner.”

The city of Davenport received a host of complaints over the years about conditions in the century-old building. The building’s owner, Andrew Wold, released a statemen saying “our thoughts and prayers are with our tenants” and that his company, Davenport Hotel LLC, is working with agencies to help them.  The city filed a new enforcement action against Wold on Tuesday, saying he failed to maintain the property “in a safe, sanitary, and structurally sound condition” before the collapse. The city is seeking a $300 fine.

PSG coach Christophe Galtier confirms Lionel Messi is leaving club

Paris Saint-Germain coach Christophe Galtier announced Thursday that Lionel Messi is leaving the club after two years. The former Barcelona forward and PSG had the option of extending his two-year deal another year, but the clause could only be activated if both parties wished to continue their relationship.

Galtier said at a news conference: “I had the privilege of coaching the best player in the history of football. This will be his last match at the Parc des Princes, and I hope that he will receive the warmest of welcomes. This year, he has been an important part of the team, always available. I don’t think any of the comments or criticisms are justified. He’s always been there for the team. It’s been a great privilege to accompany him throughout the season.”

The announcement comes after rumors surfaced that Messi was considering a move to Saudi Arabian Pro League’s Al Hilal. Messi was suspended for two weeks last month following an unsanctioned weekend trip to Saudi Arabia. It was reported in May that a potential move to Al Hilal would pay Messi as much as $400 million annually (Messi’s longtime rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, made a similar multimillion dollar move to the Saudi Pro League this past winter to play for club Al-Nassr, where he reportedly pockets $213 million per season).

This weekend’s Paris Saint-Germain game will be Messi’s last for the club. Messi has tallied 21 goals and 20 assists for PSG in all competitions this season; the Ligue 1 champions secured an 11th league title last weekend. Their 2022-23 campaign will conclude against Clermont Foot on Saturday night.

Ashley McBryde joins Halestorm for new version of their song “Terrible Things”

Ashley McBryde has been enlisted by Halestorm’s lead singer Lzzy Hale for a reimagined version of the band’s track, “Terrible Things,” which appears on the group’s 2022 fifth studio album, Back from the Dead.

Lzzy Hale said of the new version of “Terrible Things” – “To elevate the heart of this track, we asked the baddest woman in Nashville, Ashley McBryde, to lend her incredible voice. ‘Terrible Things (ft. Ashley McBryde)’ ❤️‍🔥 This is a song about hope and forgiveness of oneself. To elevate the heart of this track we asked the baddest woman in Nashville, @ashleymcbryde, to lend her incredible voice. Listen loud! I’m so in awe of her power and am so grateful to have her join us! I know the message will resonate and inspire you. We are imperfect beings, capable of so much evil. But I will not lose faith because in my dreams I believe we are not these ‘Terrible Things.’”

The pair also released a music video for “Terrible Things”, featuring both Hale and McBryde meeting up in an urban setting. Directed by Dustin Haney, the video also features a storyline of a lost and troubled woman who has no one to turn to for help.

Kim Cattrall returning for cameo in Season 2 of ‘And Just Like That…’

Samantha Jones is back. Kim Cattrall will be reprising her role as Samantha Jones for the Season 2 finale of Max’s ‘And Just Like That…’, the revival of HBO’s hit sitcom, Sex and the City. Max confirmed the news on social media, retweeting an article from the New York Post with the caption: “Secret’s out…”

Cattrall starred as publicist Samantha Jones for six seasons on the HBO series — alongside Parker as Carrie Bradshaw, Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes and Kristin Davis as Charlotte York Goldenblatt. She also reprised the character for two subsequent films.  Cattrall’s return comes as a surprise since she has repeatedly said that she would never return to the series, due in part to her very public feud with former Sex and the City co-star Sarah Jessica Parker. In May 2022, Cattrall spoke with Variety about leaving behind the character of Samantha Jones, saying: “It’s a great wisdom to know when enough is enough… I also didn’t want to compromise what the show was to me.”

Cattrall is set to make a cameo appearance in the cliffhanger finale for the second season of  ‘And Just Like That…’ Variety reported that Cattrall reportedly shot only one scene for the episode, filming it in one day back in March. The new season of the spinoff series will also feature John Corbett’s anticipated return as Aidan; and showrunner Michael Patrick King confirmed that Candice Bergen, who played Carrie Bradshaw’s Vogue editor, Enid Frick, on SATC and in the first of the franchise’s films, is officially reprising her role in the new season as well.

Season 2 of ‘And Just Like That…’ officially debuts on Max on June 22.
