Trump informed by special counsel he is a target in Jan. 6 probe

Former President Donald Trump on on Tuesday that he was informed by special counsel Jack Smith that he is a target in the Jan. 6 criminal investigation. Smith already has criminally charged Trump with about three dozen counts related to retaining classified documents when he left the White House. Letters sent by the Department of Justice provide its recipients the chance to testify before a grand jury after the DOJ determines there is substantial evidence linking them to a crime.

In a post on his Truth Social site, Trump also suggested he may soon face indictment for the Jan. 6 probe, which is focused on Trump’s efforts to overturn his loss in the 2020 election to President Joe Biden.  He said: “Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment.”  He added that he was given what he called the “horrifying news” on Sunday evening by his lawyers.

Trump is the leading contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination; and his lawyers have asked that any trial in that case take place after the 2024 election. Smith’s prosecutors oppose that bid.  Additionally, Trump is separately under criminal investigation by a Georgia state prosecutor for his attempt to get election officials there to reverse his loss to Biden in Georgia.

3-year-old driving golf cart in Florida hits and kills 7-year-old

Police in Florida said that a 3-year-old driving a golf cart stuck and killed a 7-year-old standing in the front yard of a home in Fort Myers.

According to a news release from the Florida Highway Patrol, the 3-year-old was approaching a right curve near a home on private property located on Orange River Boulevard, when the front of the cart collided with the 7-year-old who was standing in the front yard. The older child was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead; the 3-year-old wasn’t hurt. FHP Lt. Greg Bueno confirmed that the two were brothers.

Earlier this year, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill, which goes into effect Oct. 1, that requires golf cart drivers be at least 15 years old with a learner’s permit or 16 with a driver’s license. Anyone who is 18 or older must have a valid government-issued ID. Previously, Florida law allowed a 14-year-old to drive a golf cart.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, more than 6,500 children are hurt by golf carts every year across the country. Just more than half of those injured are children under 12.

Atlanta Braves place lefty Kolby Allard on 60-day IL with nerve inflammation in shoulder

The Atlanta Braves have placed left-hander Kolby Allard on the 60-day injured list after he was diagnosed with nerve inflammation in his left shoulder.

Allard, 25, was removed in the second inning of Sunday’s 8-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Monday, telling manager Brian Snitker he felt “some tingling in his fingers” after throwing a pitch. Snitker said following the game: “I just noticed him moving his arm and his shoulder and something didn’t look right.” Allard allowed four runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Allard came to Atlanta in an offseason trade with the Rangers for Jake Odorizzi. Allard suffered a Grade 2 oblique strain during Spring Training and began the regular season on the injured list. He was reinstated three weeks ago and has made four appearances for the club since then. Allard has a 6.57 ERA in four games, including three starts.

The club hasn’t provided a specific timeline for Allard, but it appears they don’t expect him back within the next two months. The Braves recalled outfielder Forrest Wall, 27, from Triple-A Gwinnett before Monday night’s series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Alex Galchenyuk issues apology, will enter NHL/NHLPA player assistance program after arrest

Alex Galchenyuk issued a statement on Tuesday to apologize for his actions following his July 9 arrest, as well as announce he is officially entering the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. The program assists players and their families dealing with mental health issues, substance abuse issues and more.

Galchenyuk, 29, addressed the statement to Arizona Coyotes leadership, his teammates and his fans, and was posted on his social media accounts: “My behavior last week was deeply offensive, uncalled for, horrendous, embarrassing, disrespectful and just plain awful. I let you all down and I am truly sorry. While this behavior after drinking alcohol is not representative of who I am, I do have to take responsibility for it. My actions have cost me my chance to do what I love, play professional hockey … I am beyond embarrassed and disappointed with myself and I feel awful for everyone I have let down. My family was counting on me to be better, the Coyotes and the amazing Coyotes fans deserve better and the brave police officers who risk their lives to keep us safe deserve better. I let them all down with my despicable and disrespectful behavior after drinking alcohol. Today, I am checking myself into the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. I am doing this to get the help I need and hope to never make a mistake like this again … Again, I am sorry I let you down, and I hope over time and with hard work, I can show all of you that I am a better person than this horrendous moment.”

The statement was the first time that Galchenyuk has made any public comments following the arrest and allegations against him, which include hit-and-run and disorderly conduct. According to a Scottsdale police report obtained by The Athletic, Galchenyuk allegedly threatened to kill a police officer and the officer’s family and also repeatedly directed a racial slur toward the officer as he was arrested.  Per the report, Galchenyuk said: “I’m gonna chop you and your daughter. Let me go, or I will make one phone call. You’ll never see your family, how scary is that? One phone call, and you’re all dead. Your whole family, your bloodline is dead.”

Following his arrest, the Coyotes terminated the one-year contract he’d signed on July 1.  Galchenyuk, the No. 3 pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, has played 11 seasons, including two for Arizona.
