Iowa judge blocks 6-week abortion restrictions, allowing legal abortion in state

On Monday, an Iowa judge temporarily blocked a new six-week abortion ban from remaining in effect. Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds signed the ban into law on Friday at a prominent political gathering hosted by an evangelical Christian group. She told attendees that it represented “an ironclad commitment to the smallest and most vulnerable among us.”

Polk County District Court Judge Joseph Seidlin’s order means the law will remain on hold while the legal challenge plays out in the court system. Seidlin wrote: “The court will grant the temporary injunction requested here. In doing so, it recognizes that there are good, honorable and intelligent people — morally, politically and legally — on both sides of this upsetting societal and constitutional dilemma. Patience and perseverance are also hallmark traits on both sides, traits that continue to deserve respect. The court believes it must follow current Iowa Supreme Court precedent and preserve the status quo ante while this litigation.”

Gov Reynolds said in a statement Monday in response to the injunction: “The abortion industry’s attempt to thwart the will of Iowans and the voices of their elected representatives continues today, but I will fight this all the way to the Iowa Supreme Court where we expect a decision that will finally provide justice for the unborn.”

With the law blocked for the time being, abortion restrictions in the state will revert to the previous law, which allowed abortion until the 20th week of pregnancy. The new law includes exceptions for the life of the woman, miscarriages and fetal abnormalities deemed by a physician “incompatible with life,” as well as for pregnancies resulting from rape and incest. For those exceptions to apply, the rape must have been reported to law enforcement or a “public or private health agency” — which includes a family doctor — within 45 days, and the incest must have been reported to any of those officials or entities within 140 days.

Eight former Northwestern players retain lawyer amid hazing scandal

In the wake of the hazing scandal that led to the dismissal of longtime Northwestern football coach Pat Fitzgerald, eight former football players have retained prominent civil rights and injury attorney, Ben Crump. Crump rose to national prominence following George Floyd’s murder in 2020 by representing several families in cases of alleged police brutality.

Crump shared in a statement: “Whether the coaches at Northwestern approved or participated in the harassment of these players or not, they are responsible for allowing and enabling a toxic, disgusting, and damaging culture in their programs.” Crump and his co-counsel, Steven M. Levin said on Monday that they are “in conversations with many others” and added that future legal action is “expected to expand beyond Northwestern’s football program and will expose extreme and abusive hazing in other college athletic programs as well.”  Crump said: “Sadly, our research suggests that this kind of abuse of student athletes may be far more common on college campuses than we know, because there is tremendous pressure to keep quiet. It’s time for a reckoning to protect young athletes.”

An independent investigation commissioned by the university found credible proof earlier this month to hazing allegations within the football program but “did not uncover evidence pointing to specific misconduct by any individual football player or coach.” But after an article from the student newspaper The Daily Northwestern detailed hazing-related activities inside the locker room — and days after suspending Fitzgerald for two weeks without pay — the school changed course and fired Fitzgerald for cause.  The longtime coach and former linebacker, has since hired a Chicago-based attorney “to take the necessary steps to protect my rights in accordance with the law.”

Attorney Levin said that he eight players who retained legal representation “want to support and validate the allegations of abuse” outlined in the Daily Northwestern story, and added that “they believe that more stringent oversight and accountability are required in college athletics to prevent such abuses from happening to other players in the future.”

Tour de France team consider legal action after selfie-taking fan causes crash

The team leading the Tour de France are considering taking legal action against a spectator who caused a massive crash by trying to take a selfie during the 15th stage to Saint-Gervais Mont‑Blanc on Sunday.

The iconic cycling race was marred by huge pile-up after a fan collided with Jumbo-Visma rider Sepp Kuss, and his fall caused several others to hit the tarmac during a tight section of the course. The fan’s outstretched arm while he was taking a selfie was the cause of the crash, causing a domino effect. While no one was seriously hurt in the accident, Kuss and his team-mate Nathan van Hooydonck were both involved in the crash. Although Kuss, 28, was able to climb back on his bike and complete the stage, Jumbo-Visma believes that the fall hindered his performance

The American Kuss suffered cuts to his elbow and knee in the fall; when asked about what happened after the stage finished, he said: “There was a spectator leaning into the road, I guess. It just happened suddenly and that’s part of the Tour, there are a lot of people. Ideally that wouldn’t happen, but it’s the biggest bike race in the world and a lot of people don’t know exactly what’s going on. There was a narrowing in a town. We were just trying to slow down the peloton to let the break go and then just on the side unfortunately, somebody wanted to get a selfie. I didn’t really see it coming.”  He shared of his injuries: “No, no, luckily the adrenaline got me through the day. I mean you just have to keep going, there’s nothing else to do about it. It’s inconvenient, but it could have been worse, and I still felt pretty good on the bike.”

French police have reportedly identified the individual, but will not arrest them unless Kuss decides to press charges, and a spokesperson for Jumbo-Visma has suggested they might take legal action on his behalf.

Dan + Shay announce new LP, share video for the single “Save Me The Trouble”

After two years, Dan + Shay are back with new music, releasing their new single, “Save Me The Trouble,” along with the video for the track. Smyers said via a statement: “I don’t think I’ve ever been prouder of a song that I am this one. We wanted to have something that was a real moment, and when we started writing this, it felt like it could be something big. I wanted every section to build, and even in the second chorus, when you’re like, ‘Okay, there’s no way it could possibly get any crazier,’ then Shay takes off even further.”  You can take a look at the video for “Save Me The Trouble,” – here.

The duo recently reflected on nearly breaking up, and that despite their success, they were both burnt out after their career demanded so much from both of them. Smyers said in a video dubbed “The Drive” shared to social media: “I was in, like, the lowest low of my entire life. Came off the road and I was like, ‘Man, I f–king hate music. I’m ready to quit.’”  Mooney went on to tell Smyers: “I could feel the separation, and I think there was little things between you and I that we never talked about. It was affecting everything. Not just our band.” After not speaking for four months, the duo shared that they worked things out and are now stronger than ever. Said Smyers: “I can feel the closeness of our relationship and our friendship when I listen back to the music. We are by far, a million times, the closest we’ve ever been. For so many reasons. But because we worked at it. That makes what we’re doing now infinitely sustainable. I could do this the rest of my life with you.

Dan and Shay later shared news of their upcoming, new LP: “Our new album, Bigger Houses, will be available everywhere September 15, and pre-order begins tonight at 11 PM CT.”  The duo also shared two other songs from the upcoming album, “Heartbreak On The Map,” and their title track, “Bigger House,” as well as the music videos for both.  To pre-order “Bigger Houses,” head here.

TIME Studios to produce Notorious B.I.G. documentary ‘Understanding Christopher Wallace’

TIME Studios has announced the production of a new documentary based on The Notorious B.I.G., to be titled ‘Understanding Christopher Wallace.’  The studio describes the documentary as “an intimate look at the untold life story of late rapper The Notorious B.I.G.,’ and explained that the doc will follow Biggie’s son Christopher “C.J.” Wallace, who was born five months before his father died in 1997.

C.J Wallace will seek to learn more about his father throughout the doc, and the documentary will share footage of Biggie’s time in the spotlight, and present-day footage of the younger Wallace.  TIME Studios’ head of documentary Loren Hammonds shared a statement: “The Notorious B.I.G. had such an immense impact on not only music but also on popular culture as a whole. But this film is about so much more than that. It’s about fatherhood, loss, and love. It’s incredibly special to be able to let audiences learn about the man behind the myth through C. J.’s eyes, and we’re very proud to play a part in carrying on Christopher Wallace’s inimitable legacy.”

C.J. Wallace shared: “Over the past few years, I realized my personal journey is connected to understanding who Christopher George Latore Wallace was outside of his big rap persona. I am on a journey to fully understand the world he lived in and the massive impact he had on American and Black history and by doing so, I can ensure that I honor his hopes and dreams while I build and create my own legacy for future generations of Wallaces.”

Understanding Christopher Wallace will be directed by Vikram Gandhi, who previously directed and produced the 2020 Hulu documentary about rapper 6ix9ine titled 69: The Sage of Danny Hernandez. Gandhi said: “It’s an honor to document C.J.’s personal odyssey to understand his father and to create a deeper and more definitive film about the man behind the persona Notorious BIG, Christopher Wallace.”
