Joey Chestnut wins 16th title in Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest 2023

Joey “Jaws” Chestnut won his 16th Mustard Belt by consuming 62 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes at the 2023 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4th. Chestnut battled a lengthy weather delay, but still became this year’s world champion for the eighth straight year.

Thunderstorms in the New York area caused the two-hour delay, but it didn’t seem to affect Chestnut, who easily led his competitors. Chestnut, however, was unable to break his world record of 76 hot dogs and buns, with this year’s official total 62 hot dogs and buns consumed – one fewer than the 63 he ate to win the event in 2022.

Chestnut finished 13 ahead of the runner-up, Geoffrey Esper; the race for second and third place went down to the wire, with Esper – last year’s second place winner – finishing with 49 hot dogs and buns consumed. Third place went to James Webb, with 47 hot dogs and buns consumed.

In the women’s competition, Miki Sudo continued to dominate and won her ninth career Mustard Belt with 39.5 hot dogs and buns. Mayoi Ebihara finished in second place, with 33.5 hot dogs and buns eaten.

Chapel Hart releases the cinematic video for ‘Welcome to Fist City’

Chapel Hart – comprised of sisters Danica and Devynn Hart and first cousin Trea Swindle – have released the video for “Welcome To Fist City,” directed by Tim Hardiman and filmed in historic Clarksdale, MS.  The trio are hoping to make late country music icon Loretta Lynn proud with a cinematic video of the song she requested they write before she passed away.

Says Swindle: “Just when I think we can’t have more fun bringing a story to life, I’m proven wrong yet again. Getting a chance to film this long-awaited video—and in the historic Clarksdale, MS no less—has been an experience I’ll never forget. I can only hope that it puts as many smiles on other people’s faces as much as it does mine every time I watch it!”

Danica adds: “This music video has you hanging on from the opening scene. Our hope is that people will watch our videos and ‘feel’ something! It feels like we did it again, you will laugh, you will gasp, you will say oh wow! Ultimately we hope folks have as much fun watching as we do making them! We may be ready for the big screen after this one!”

Devynn shares, “It was so much fun!! I think the part that I enjoyed the most was watching the storyline of both Fist City and Welcome to Fist City come to life. I feel that the video truly ties everything together and creates a perfect vivid picture. Tim Hardiman is a genius and it was such a pleasure to work with him.”

“Welcome To Fist City” is featured on Chapel Hart’s recently released new album Glory Days. The trio wrote all 11 tracks, including the previously released title track.  Take a look at the video for “Welcome To Fist City” – here.

2 killed, 30 injured in mass shooting at Baltimore block party

At least two people were killed, and approximately 30 were injured, in a mass shooting at a Baltimore block party in the early hours of Sunday. Acting Police Commissioner Richard Worley said: “Our hearts and prayers are going out to the families, sending out to the families and friends of these victims as well as the community in our entire city.”

Police confirmed on Sunday afternoon that the two people killed at the party, in the city’s Brooklyn Homes neighborhood, were adults, but neither has yet been identified, adding that at least 30 others had been injured, three of them critically. Half of the injured victims are under 18.

Police first received calls about the shooting around 12:30 a.m. Sunday; nineteen people were transferred to the emergency department of MedStar Harbor Hospital. Debra Schindler, regional director of media and public relations at MedStar Health, said in a statement that the victims were “suffering varying degrees of injury from gunshot wounds,” adding, “multiple critically injured patients were evaluated and triaged simultaneously by clinical staff, while hospital security managed the throng of family members that gathered in and outside of the emergency department.” The University of Maryland Medical Center said in a statement that 12 patients were in their trauma center, and four more were being treated in the pediatric emergency department.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said during a news conference: “This was a reckless, cowardly act that happened here. I want those who are responsible to hear me, hear me very clearly,” Scott continued. “We will not stop until we find you, and we will find you. I hope, every single breath that you take that you think about the lives that you took, and you think about the lives that you impacted here tonight.” Scott called on citizens to come forward with any information they have: “Somebody out there knows who did this … We need you to say something. We need you to treat this as if someone had taken the life of your son, your daughter, your father, your brother. We need you to do that and step up and do the right thing.”
