Pittsburgh Steelers DT Cameron Heyward undergoes surgery, expected to miss 8 weeks

Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro defensive tackle Cameron Heyward underwent groin surgery Thursday in Pittsburgh, and is expected to miss eight weeks of play. NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo said the Steelers defensive lineman is expected to be able to return around the midpoint of the regular season. The 34-year-old Heyward appeared to sustain the injury in the first quarter of the Steelers’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in Pittsburgh. He attempted to remain in the game, but was ruled out at halftime.

Heyward signed a 4-year, $65.6 million deal with the Steelers in 2020. He’s missed just one game since 2017, totaling 10.5 sacks in 2022 and 10 sacks in 2021. His 78.8 sacks trail only James Harrison (80.5) and T.J. Watt (80.5) for the most in franchise history. His 184 games played are tied with Dermontti Dawson for the sixth-most in franchise history.

The Steelers will host the Cleveland Browns in an AFC North divisional matchup at 8:15 p.m. EDT Monday in Pittsburgh.

Red Sox fire chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom after 4 years

The Boston Red Sox announced Thursday they have fired chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom. The team said principal owner John Henry, chairman Tom Werner, and president & CEO Sam Kennedy notified of Bloom of the decision to let him go.

In a statement, Henry said Bloom “set the stage for the future,” but that wasn’t enough to save his job; while President & CEO Sam Kennedy read from a prepared statement before his press conference: “The decision was not made lightly or easily. We all know where we are in the standings. It’s a painful reality that fans feel as deeply as we do. Our fans deserve a winning, competitive team that consistently plays postseason baseball.”

Bloom was hired by the team in October 2019 following a successful 15-year career with the Tampa Bay Rays, succeeding Dave Dombrowski. In his four seasons as chief baseball officer, Bloom helped develop the Boston farm system, including prospect Marcelo Mayer, the No. 4 overall pick in 2021 MLB Draft.

Under Bloom, the Red Sox made the ALCS in 2021 after winning 92 games in the regular season. However, the Red Sox haven’t had successful results on the field, with only that one playoff appearance during Bloom’s tenure. Overall, Boston was 267-262 with Bloom; they went 78-84 last season, and are going to miss the playoffs again this season, currently sitting 73-72, 7½ games behind the final wild card spot at the time of Bloom’s firing.

The team also announced general manager Brian O’Halloran was offered a new senior leadership position within the baseball operations department. O’Halloran will lead day-to-day operations alongside assistant general managers Eddie Romero, Raquel Ferreira, and Michael Groopman until a replacement for Bloom is found.

Rachel McAdams to make her Broadway debut in ‘Mary Jane’

Variety reported that Rachel McAdams will make her Broadway debut in Mary Jane, a new play by Amy Herzog opening spring 2024. Mary Jane debuted at Yale Repertory Theater in 2017 and had an Off-Broadway run at New York Theater Workshop the same year.

McAdams, 44, shared her love of theater in an interview with The New York Times, saying: “I’ve been looking for a play forever, but kind of casually — not fully committed to it — and this came along, I read it, and I was just so taken with it. I think it might be like riding a bike. [But] there’s a little bit of the unknown about it. And I think also just having emotional stamina — you really don’t know until you’re there if you’re going to be able to fill your vessel up enough to keep you going. So it’s just all those ‘I won’t know until I get there’ things, but I’m excited to do the work.”

Mary Jane will begin previews April 2, 2024, at Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in New York City.

Skid Row reschedules fall tour concerning singer Erik Grönwall’s health

Skid Row has postponed their October 2023 tour due to singer Erik Grönwall’s ongoing health issues. Grönwall, who joined the band in 2022, is a cancer survivor having previously been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The tour postponement is directly related to treatment he received two years ago.

A statement on the band’s social media accounts read: “Due to utmost concern for the health and well-being of one of our own, Skid Row’s lead vocalist, Erik Grönwall, the band has made the decision to move the third leg of their highly anticipated US and Canada tour originally scheduled for October 2023 to March 2024.”

Grönwall said on social media: “I want to apologize to all the fans, promoters, Buckcherry and the Skid Row team and to my bandmates. Due to the stem cell transplantation I did on August 12, 2021 my immune system is still partially impaired, which can result in longer time before clearance of infections and also impaired fitness during infections. It will get better with time and all I can do until then is roll with the punches and ensure I have a better balance in terms of touring.”

Skid Row launched their 2023 co-headlining tour with Buckcherry in March, and headed overseas for summer dates before returning to the U.S. for another run of shows beginning Aug. 31 in Dallas.  The band had to cancel concerts in Huntington, New York, Lynn, Massachusetts and Portland, Maine due to the “ongoing illness” of a band member.  While the band’s remaining September dates are scheduled to go ahead as planned, performances originally scheduled for October have been postponed to 2024.
