Federal judge denies Mark Meadows motion to stay in Georgia election case

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Steve Jones denied former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows’ request for an emergency stay in the Georgia election interference case.  Meadows had pushed for Jones to hold back on his previous decision to deny his motion to move the case to federal court; however, the judge wrote in his ruling that Meadows did not show he is entitled an emergency stay.

Meadows filed the motion to stay Jones’ decision on Monday, citing factors including “irreparable harm, balance of equities and public interest.” Jones determined that Meadows failed to demonstrate anything more than a “possibility of irreparable harm in absence of a stay.” and rejected Meadows’ argument of “prejudice to the state,” saying that the state has a strong interest in the criminal prosecution being free from federal interference. Jones also ruled that Meadows should not be offered protection under the Supremacy Clause because he was not acting “in the scope of his federal office” when he was involved in the acts alleged in the charges against him, including arranging the infamous call between Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. Trump was recorded asking Raffensperger to “find” votes that would change the result of the state’s election in Trump’s favor.

Meadows is charged with soliciting an official to violate their oath of office and violating the federal Hatch Act, which prohibits officials from using their government status to influence an election. He is among 19 defendants in the case related to the 2020 presidential election, including former President Donald Trump.

Trump’s attorneys were granted an Oct. 23, start date for their trial in the case, and Jones acknowledged that there is no guarantee that Meadows will go on trial in October. Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee has been hesitant to rule that all 19 defendants will go on trial at that time.

Escaped Pennsylvania killer captured after intense two-week manhunt

Danelo Cavalcante, the convicted murderer who escaped from a Pennsylvania prison late last month, has been captured after a two-week search. Cavalcante escaped from the Chester County Prison in on Aug. 31 in Chester County, Pa. The 34-year-old was convicted of first-degree murder for stabbing his girlfriend to death in July, and is also wanted on a homicide accusation in Brazil, authorities previously said.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Lt. Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police confirmed at a news conference that Cavalcante was apprehended just after 8 a.m. on Wednesday by members of a tactical team leading the manhunt;  no shots were fired. Bivens said authorities started getting closer to Cavalcante shortly after midnight Wednesday morning, when a burglar alarm sounded in a residence that was within the parameters of their search. The investigation did not find anything, but it brought the team closer to the area. Subsequently, authorities were able to monitor Cavalcante’s movements using an overhead aircraft which identified a “heat source” on the ground, Bivens said. Cavalcante tried to escape by crawling “through thick underbrush,” Bivens continued, “taking his rifle with him when he went.” He said Cavalcante was subdued by a police dog and “forcibly taken into custody” after resisting officers as they attempted to arrest him. Cavalcante sustained “a minor bite wound,” according to Bivens, but there were no other injuries. The escapee was transported to a police station in Avondale for questioning, and will ultimately be moved to a state prison.

Chester County Prison’s acting warden Howard Holland said that Cavalcante escaped from the exercise yard by climbing up a wall to the roof area. Surveillance footage from the prison grounds, which authorities released about a week into their search, showed Cavalcante hoisting himself up from the ground by balancing between a fence and a brick wall, and climbing upward until he disappeared fro

Cavalcante, a Brazilian national, was convicted last month of first-degree murder and sentenced to serve life in prison without parole for killing his former girlfriend, Deborah Brandao, in April 2021. He allegedly stabbed her to death, and the woman’s young children witnessed the crime. Cavalcante is also wanted in connection with a homicide in Brazil, according to the U.S. Marshal Service, and he was repeatedly described as “extremely dangerous” by law enforcement throughout the manhunt involving hundreds of local, state and federal officers.m the camera’s view. His escape is under investigation by the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office.

NBA Board of Governors approve tougher resting policy rules

The NBA’s Board of Governors have approved new provisions to punish teams for resting star players in national TV games and in-season tournament games, as well as resting multiple star players in regular season games.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the proposal called for teams to be fined “$100,000 for first offenses, $250,000 for second offenses and $1 million more than the previous penalty for each additional fine.” Said Wojnarowski: “ESPN Source: The NBA Board of Governors has voted to approve new rules strengthening resting policy rules and punishments for star players that include national TV games, in-season tournament games and sitting out multiple All-Stars together in regular season games.” ESPN obtained a memo from the league outlining changes designed to increase the visibility of star players, which includes rules against wholesale player shutdowns and stipulations that healthy players must be visible to fans when rested.

The NBA’s media rights deal expires after the 2025 season, and the league is reportedly seeking $75 billion for its next one. Wojnarowski wrote that the league has defined a “star player” as any player to make an All-NBA or All-Star team in the past three seasons.

NFLPA calling to move all stadium fields to natural grass after Rodgers’ injury

In light of Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending Achilles injury on Monday night with the Jets, the NFLPA is calling to move all stadium fields to natural grass rather than astroturf. Playing surfaces in the NFL has always been a hot topic, and many are blaming the turf at MefLife Stadium for Rodgers injury.

New NFLPA executive director Lloyd Howell released a statement on Wednesday, calling for all NFL stadiums to move to grass fields. His statement read in its entirety: “Moving all stadium fields to high quality natural grass surfaces is the easiest decision the NFL can make. The players overwhelmingly prefer it and the data is clear that grass is simply safer than artificial turf. It is an issue that has been near the top of the players’ list during my team visits and one I have raised with the NFL. While we know there is an investment to making this change, there is a bigger cost to everyone in our business if we keep losing our best players to unnecessary injuries. It makes no sense that stadiums can flip over to superior grass surfaces when the World Cup comes, or soccer clubs come to visit for exhibition games in the summer, but inferior artificial surfaces are acceptable for our own players. This is worth the investment and it simply needs to change now.”

The statement by Howell was echoed by Rodgers’ Jets teammate, cornerback D.J. Reed, who posted on social media Tuesday that all stadiums need real grass. Green Bay Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari also quickly took to social media following Rodgers’ injury on Monday night, saying: “Congrats @nfl. How many more players have to get hurt on ARTIFICIAL TURF??! You care more about soccer players than us. You plan to remove all artificial turf for the World Cup coming up. So clearly it’s feasible. I’m sick of this..Do better!”

NFL executive VP for health and safety innovation Jeff Miller recently said: “We work very closely with the [NFL] Players Association on surface research. We share all the injury information. They have all the same data we have. … We have stadiums with natural grass where there’s a lower injury rate than synthetic surfaces, and we have synthetic surfaces where the injury rate is lower. … Our effort is to try to drive down those rates on both surfaces. Hopefully in the next couple years we’ll see some progress in those spaces.”

Ozzy Osbourne to undergo more surgery stemming from past injuries

Ozzy Osbourne revealed during the premier episode of the relaunched “The Osbournes” podcast that he has to undergo another surgery due to the injuries he sustained in a 2019 fall, as well as a 2003 ATV accident. Ozzy is also slated to get an epidural injection to relieve the pain he is currently experiencing.

Ozzy shared he still experiences pain despite have a previous spinal surgery to correct the injuries from his 2003 quad bike accident, saying during the podcast, “My lower back is… I’m going for an epidural soon because what’s happening, what they’ve discovered is the neck has been fixed, but below the neck there’s two vertebrae where the bike hit me and disintegrated, there’s nothing left of ’em. All I know is right now, I’m in a lot of pain, I’m in a lot of discomfort.”

Daughter Kelly Osbourne asked her father, “have we had a second opinion?”, and Ozzy responded, “I said to the doctor yesterday, I said you know what I’ve heard, which I have, people have discs replaced that are worked on and they become the strongest things in the bone. In my back, the two discs, and the muscles on my shoulders have separated from my skeleton, and that’s why I lean forward as it’s like gravity is bringing my head forward.” Wife Sharon added that doctors informed them that they don’t know if the surgery will be successful or not

Osbourne recently canceled his appearance at the upcoming Power Trip Festival, which would have seen him playing on an iconic bill alongside AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, and Tool. Ozzy has been replaced by Judas Priest at the three-day event, set for October 6th-8th in Indio, California.
