NJ Sen. Bob Menendez rejects calls to resign after federal indictment

During a press conference on Monday, New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez said he would not resign following his indictment on federal bribery charges. Menendez, D-N.J., and his wife, Nadine, were indicted on Friday on allegations of accepting bribes, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right, as well as using his position to benefit three New Jersey businessmen and the government of Egypt.

In his first public comments since the three-count federal indictment against him, the 69-year-old Menendez called for the public to wait for more information, dismissing the allegations and defending his record on fighting human rights abuses in Egypt. Menendez said Monday in Union City, where he started his political career: “I recognize this will be the biggest fight yet. But as I have stated throughout this whole process, I firmly believe that when all the facts are presented, not only will I be exonerated, but I still will be New Jersey’s senior senator.”

Federal prosecutors in New York alleged the couple received hundreds of thousands of dollars and lavish luxury gifts in exchange for the senator using his influence to benefit three New Jersey business associates and the government of Egypt (the businessmen are also facing charges). Menendez argues that he has “remained steadfast on the side of civil society and human rights defenders in Egypt and everywhere else in the world … If you look at my actions related to Egypt during the period described in this indictment and throughout my whole career, my record is clear and consistent in holding Egypt accountable for its unjust detention of American citizens and others, its human rights abuses, its deepening relationship with Russia and efforts that have eroded the independence of the nation’s judiciary,.”

The indictment also said the FBI found $500,000 of cash kept in envelopes and jacket pockets throughout Menendez’s home during a search last year. The senator said he has withdrawn “thousands of dollars in cash from my personal savings” over the last 30 years, “which I have kept for emergencies and because of the history of my family facing confiscation in Cuba. This may seem old-fashioned, but these were monies drawn from my personal saving account, based on the income that I had lawfully derived over those 30 years.”

Menendez stepped down from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Friday, with colleagues on both sides of the aisle have called for him to resign from the Senate, including Democrats Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.  However, Menendez said during his press conference: “Instead of waiting for all the facts to be presented, others have rushed to judgment seeking a political opportunity for themselves and those around them. All I ask for in this moment — is to pause and allow for all the facts to be presented.”

Chargers’ Mike Williams to miss rest of season after confirming torn ACL

NFL Media reports that an MRI on Monday has confirmed that wide receiver Mike Williams has a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season.  During the Chargers matchup against the Vikings on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium, Williams went down with less than two minutes left in the third, clutching his left knee. He remained on the turf until receiving assistance from trainers, and was helped off the field, then later carted to the locker room with Los Angeles up 21-17. The Chargers went on to defeat the Vikings, 28-24.  Before leaving the game, Williams hauled in six passes for 110 yards and a touchdown.

The seventh-year veteran had been off to a great start this season, with 230 receiving yards in the Chargers’ first three games. However, the injury-plagued Williams hasn’t played a full season since 2018, missing four regular-season games last season because of an ankle injury, and sidelined for a playoff game after a back injury in the regular-season finale at Denver.

In Williams absence, Joshua Palmer and first-round pick Quentin Johnston will be expected to pick up the slack. Keenan Allen, the Chargers’ top receiver, set a single-game franchise record with 18 receptions for 215 yards in Sunday’s game.

Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo in concussion protocol following loss to Steelers

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels told reporters on Monday that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is in concussion protocol after the Raider fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night, 23-18.

Garoppolo played every snap in Sunday night’s game, and took four sacks and eight total QB hits. But he did not meet with reporters following the game as it was later revealed he was being evaluated for a concussion, though it remains unclear when the concussion might have occurred. Garoppolo finished 28 of 44 passing for 324 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Garoppolo must clear through concussion protocol to play in the Raiders’ (1-2) Week 4 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers (1-2). If Garoppolo is not cleared to take the field by then, it’s likely longtime New England Patriots backup quarterback Brian Hoyer would start vs. Justin Herbert, with rookie Aidan O’Connell as his backup.

The Oak Ridge Boys announce ‘American Made: Farewell Tour’

The Oak Ridge Boys announced they will be hitting the road one last time off the ‘American Made: Farewell Tour,’ which includes tour dates in 2023 through 2024.

The band’s current lineup includes: lead singer Duane Allen, baritone singer William Lee Golden, tenor vocalist Joe Bonsall, and bass singer Richard Sterban. All four members joined in 1973, and this year marks their 50th anniversary together.

Golden said to Billboard: “When you’re saying farewell, there’s a lot of people you want to say farewell to. It’s all the people that supported you along the way, the ones that called the radio stations, the ones that come and bought tickets to see us sing and sat in the rain with the rest of us while we were able to play and sing music. It’s a lot of emotions because we as the Oak Ridge Boys are a family.”

Added Bonsall: “We’ve worked nearly 150 dates a year almost every year. We’ve never booked tours like a lot of groups do — making an album and doing maybe 50 or 60 days to support it. We may tour under a different tour name every year, but it’s really the never-ending tour. We’ve never known how to stop or slow down, for sure. So what we have put a concentrated effort in our thought pattern here in the last year or so into how can we slow it down some, but still keep moving forward.”
