Daytime Emmy-winning actor Billy Miller dies at age 43

3x Daytime-Emmy winning actor Billy Miller, who starred the soaps The Young & the Restless, All My Children and General Hospital, has died at the age of 43. Miller’s 44th birthday would have been on Sunday. Miller’s manager confirmed the news to Variety in a statement, which read: “The actor was struggling with manic depression when he died,” without offering more details about the Texas native’s death.

Soap opera journalist Michael Fairman first broke the news, citing an unnamed source close to Miller, as well as a representative for the actor’s Los Angeles restaurant, The Belmont. Miller played Richie Novak on ‘All My Children’ (2007-2008), Billy Abbott on ‘The Young and the Restless’ (2008-2014) and Jason Morgan/Drew Cain on ‘General Hospital’ (2014-2019).  His other prime-time credits include Suits, Ringer, Ray Donovan, Justified, CSI: NY and most recently on the AppleTV+ series, Truth Be Told.

A message on the Y&R X (formerly Twitter) feed said: “Billy Miller was a talented man with a heart of gold and always lit up the scene with amazing performances. He will be sorely missed. Our deepest sympathies to his family and all who loved him.”

General Hospital’s executive producer Frank Valentini also expressed his condolences at the news: “I am devastated to hear news of the incredibly talented Billy Miller’s passing. On behalf of the entire @GeneralHospital family, our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Miller is survived by his mother, Patricia, sister Megan, brother-in-law Ronnie, nephew Grayson and niece Charley.  His management team said that donations can be made in his memory to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.

‘The Talk,’ Jennifer Hudson join Drew Barrymore in pausing production amid strikes

As Drew Barrymore announced she had changed her decision to resume her talk show amid the writers strike, ‘The Jennifer Hudson Show’ and ‘The Talk’ also have delayed their returns.

A CBS spokesperson told Variety in a statement Sunday: ‘The Talk is pausing its season premiere scheduled for September 18. We will continue to evaluate plans for a new launch date.’ The series, which first hit the air in 2010, features co-hosts Jerry O’Connell, Sheryl Underwood, Natalie Morales, Akbar Gbajabiamila and Amanda Kloots. The Talk last produced new episodes before the writers strike commenced May 2. Picketers were outside of a rehearsal show outside of the Studio City, California facility where it is filmed last week, according to the outlet. Sources told Variety that The Jennifer Hudson Show, which was slated to debut its second season Monday, also paused production amid the ongoing labor dispute

Barrymore’s initial decision to return to the air without her three union writers and with picketers outside her studio was met with pushback on social media. Barrymore drew criticism for taping new episodes of her daytime talk show despite the ongoing strikes, but has since changed course and said she’ll wait until the labor issues are resolved before returning to the air. She posted on Instagram: ‘I have listened to everyone, and I am making the decision to pause the show´s premiere until the strike is over. I have no words to express my deepest apologies to anyone I have hurt and, of course, to our incredible team who works on the show and has made it what it is today.’  AA CBS Media Ventures spokesperson said in a statement: ‘We support Drew’s decision to pause the show´s return and understand how complex and difficult this process has been for her.’

‘Rolling Stone’ co-founder Jann Wenner removed from R&R HOF board after controversial comments

Days after ‘Rolling Stone’ co-founder Jann Wenner’s controversial comments were published in a New York Times interview, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation announced the removal of Wenner from its board of directors, which he helped found in 1983. The hall said in a statement: “Jann Wenner has been removed from the Board of Directors of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.”

The New York Times published an interview with Wenner regarding his forthcoming book, “The Masters,” which contains interviews with musicians — all white men — including Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen and Bono. When Wenner was asked why the book did not include interviews with women or people of color, Wenner is quoted as saying about the women of rock: “Just none of them were as articulate enough on this intellectual level.” In the interview he expressed similar thoughts regarding Black rock artists. Wenner said, according to the interview: “Of Black artists — you know, Stevie Wonder, genius, right? I suppose when you use a word as broad as ‘masters,’ the fault is using that word. Maybe Marvin Gaye, or Curtis Mayfield? I mean, they just didn’t articulate at that level.”

Wenner said that his selection of musicians for the book was “what I was interested in,” but acknowledged that there might be criticism of his choice: “You know, just for public relations sake, maybe I should have gone and found one Black and one woman artist to include here that didn’t measure up to that same historical standard, just to avert this kind of criticism. Which, I get it. I had a chance to do that.”

After his removal from the Rock Hall Board of Directors, Wenner released a statement apologizing for his comments: “In my interview with The New York Times I made comments that diminished the contributions, genius, and impact of Black and women artists and I apologize wholeheartedly for those remarks.” Wenner said the forthcoming book, was “not meant to represent the whole of music and it’s diverse and important originators but to reflect the high points of my career and interviews I felt illustrated the breadth and experience in that career.”

Los Angeles deputy shot and killed in patrol car after being ‘ambushed’

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy said that an on-duty officer was “ambushed” and killed Saturday night while driving in his police cruiser by an unknown suspect. Sheriff Robert Luna told reporters at a late night press conference that Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer, 30, was found unconscious in his car at 6 p.m. Saturday night by a good Samaritan at the intersection of the Sierra Highway and Avenue Q.  Bystanders called 911 and Clinkunbroomer was taken to the hospital for a gunshot wound but did not survive.

Luna said they have no theory for the suspect’s motive, but it appeared the deputy was targeted because “he was in uniform.”  Luna added: “He was just driving down the street and for no apparent reason — and we’re still looking into the specific reasons — somebody decided to shoot and murder him.” Clinkunbroomer had just left the Palmdale station, ad a a video clip with that shows a car pulling alongside the patrol car before speeding away. Investigators are looking for additional video that may match what appears to be the moment of the ambush.  Luna said: “Detectives are in the initial stages of this investigation and seeking the public’s assistance to apprehend this suspect. So I’m gonna continue with my notes, but I’m just gonna pause we really need your help.”

Clinkunbroomer, a third-generation deputy, had spent the last year and a half as a field training officer. Luna described the role as one reserved for the “best of the best” in the department: “he embodied the values of bravery… selflessness, and an absolute commitment to justice. Our deputy was a devoted family member and a shared cherished member of our community who was cowardly shot while working tirelessly to serve our community this evening.” Clinkunbroomer got engaged just four days prior to his death; he is survived by his fiancé, parents and grandparents.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the department’s homicide investigators at 323-890-5500, or share an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Two charged with murder in death of 1-year-old at NYC day care due to fentanyl exposure

Police confirm that two people have been arrested on murder charges after a 1-year-old died and three other children were hospitalized following suspected exposure to opioids at a Bronx, New York daycare on Friday. The 1-year-old, Nicholas Dominici, died; and three other children were hospitalized after being exposed to fentanyl at the daycare. A spokesperson for the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner said Nicholas’s cause and manner of death was under investigation.

The two suspects — Carlisto Acevedo Brito, 41, and Grei Mendez, 36 — were arrested Saturday night on multiple counts of manslaughter, assault, criminal possession of a controlled substance and narcotic drug and endangering the welfare of a child. Brito and Mendez’s relationship to the day care center was not immediately apparent. It was also not immediately clear whether Brito and Mendez have lawyers who could speak on their behalf.

Police said that a 911 call came in just after 2:40 p.m. on Friday, and upon arrival at the daycare facility, officers discovered Dominici unconscious and unresponsive. The child was later pronounced dead at Montefiore Medical Center upon arrival. Officers also found an unconscious 2-year-old boy and an 8-month-old girl, who were also transported to Montefiore; the boy is in critical condition and the girl is stable condition. New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said that first responders also administered Narcan to the three children who they found at the day care center. Upon executing a search warrant at the day care, NYPD officials found a “kilo press,” which Kenny described as an item “commonly used by drug dealers when packaging large quantities of drugs.”

A third child, a 2-year-old boy, was also hospitalized at BronxCare Health System in stable condition. Detective Kenny said that the third child’s mother took him to the hospital herself after picking him up from the day care center around 12:15 p.m. that day and noticing that he was “acting lethargic and unresponsive” once they returned home. At the hospital, staff administered Narcan, the opioid overdose antidote, to save the boy’s life.

According to Kenny and Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Commissioner Ashwin Vasan, the day care center was a home-based center licensed by the state of NY, and was last inspected by officials with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene on Sept. 9. No violations were found at that time, and Vasan added that it was a surprise inspection that the day care officials did not have advance notice of. Vasan said that the day care center, which opened in January, had had two routine inspections early on to secure its license.

Baltimore Orioles to advance, Tampa Bay Rays also clinch playoff berths after Rangers loss

The Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles each clinched a playoff berth due to the Rangers’ loss to the Guardians on Sunday.  While each team are guaranteed for a playoff spot, the American League East title is still up in the air.

The Orioles defeated the Rays at Camden Yards on Sunday with of 5-4 win in 11 innings. The win means the Orioles currently hold a two-game lead atop the AL East standings, and have a three-game lead in the division.

The Rays and O’s are the first American League teams to clinch a postseason berth; they join the NL East champion Atlanta Braves and NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers. This is Tampa’s fifth consecutive postseason berth and the ninth in franchise history.

The winner in the AL East race will likely claim the top-overall seed in the AL side and thus a Wild Card Series bye and home-field advantage through at least the Championship Series. As a result, the runner-up must play in the best-of-three Wild Card Series in the opening round of the MLB playoffs.

Indianapolis Colts’ QB Anthony Richardson suffers concussion in game vs. Texans

The Indianapolis Colts announced that rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson was diagnosed with a concussion and missed the majority of Sunday’s 31-20 win over the Houston Texans. In addition to Richardson, Colts starting center Ryan Kelly was also ruled out with a concussion in the second half of Sunday’s game.

The No. 4 pick of April’s NFL draft took a shot from Texans safety M.J. Stewart Jr. early in the first quarter on a 15-yard touchdown run off the right side. Richardson appeared to hit the back of his head on the turf; he remained in the game for two more Colts possessions — during which he did not take any obvious hits — but was later taken to the medical tent and eventually the locker room for further evaluation.

Richardson was replaced by Gardner Minshew in the second quarter. The veteran signal-caller stepped in to complete 19 of 23 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown in Indianapolis’ first win of the season. Before leaving the game, Richardson finished with 56 passing yards as well as 36 rushing yards.
