Former MLB all-star Steve Garvey joins California U.S. Senate race

Former MLB all-star Steve Garvey announced on Tuesday he will run for California’s open U.S. Senate seat in 2024. The 74-year-old Garvey, who enters the California U.S. Senate race as a Republican in a predominantly Democratic state, is seeking to succeed the late California Sen. Dianne Feinstein who died Sept. 29 at age 90. Feinstein had held the seat since 1992. A Republican candidate hasn’t won a Senate race in 35 years in California.

Garvey launched his campaign in a video filled with baseball imagery that recalled his career as a perennial All-Star who played first base for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres.  Garvey said in the video: “I never played for Democrats or Republicans or independents. I played for all of you. It’s going to be a commonsense campaign.” Garvey added that his campaign will focus on improving the quality of life for all Californians by reducing inflation, addressing public safety issues, advocating for small businesses and reducing homelessness: “We need fresh voices; we need new ideas. We need people who are going to be exactly that: for the people. Simply, I’m running for all the people — the things that affect the daily lives of people in California.”

Steve Garvey was a 10-time All-Star and appeared in the World Series five times — four with the Dodgers and one with the Padres.  He won the NL MVP in 1974, when he batted .312 with 21 home runs and 111 RBIs while leading the Dodgers to the World Series. Seven years later, the Dodgers beat the New York Yankees in the 1981 World Series, with Garvey batting .417 in the six-game series, finishing with 10 hits in 24 at-bats. After 14 seasons with the Dodgers, Garvey signed with San Diego before the 1983 season and helped lead the Padres to the first World Series appearance in franchise history the next season. He played his last major league game in 1987 with the Padres after an 18-year major league career.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom temporarily appointed Democrat Laphonza Butler, president of EMILY’s List, to fill Feinstein’s seat. She has not announced intentions to run in 2024. Other Democratic candidates in the Senate race include Reps. Adam Schiff, Barbara Lee, and Katie Porter.

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas reach temporary child custody agreement

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner have reached a custody agreement regarding their daughters, Willa, 3, and Delphine, 1, for the rest of 2023. The decision comes after the former couple had a four-day mediation in New York City, which was their first court hearing. After news broke of the temporary custody agreement, Jonas and Turner said in a joint statement: “After a productive and successful mediation, we have agreed that the children will spend time equally in loving homes in both the U.S. and the UK. We look forward to being great coparents.”

Court documents read: “The parties have been engaged in productive mediation from October 4-7, 2023. Due to the progress made at mediation, the parties believe that an amicable resolution on all issues between them is forthcoming. For that reason, the parties jointly request that the Court enter the proposed order staying this proceeding and vacating all deadlines and trial dates submitted herewith.” The court ruled that Jonas, 34, and Turner, 27, will each get two weeks with their children until January 2024, and that during their time with their daughters each parent will be able to travel anywhere in the U.S. or U.K. with their children. Turner and Jonas will alternate weeks with their children between October and December, and their daughters will be with their father on Thanksgiving and their mother on Christmas. On Jan. 2, 2024, the estranged couple have a trial to resolve the the custody of their children and come to a more permanent solution.

This temporary custody agreement comes after Jonas filed for divorce on Sept. 5. Turner then filed a lawsuit against Jonas last month accusing him of “wrongful retention” of their two children – alleging that he was preventing their children (who are citizens in both the U.S. and U.K.) from returning to “their habitual residence of England” by withholding their passports. Turner said the family relocated to England in April and planned to move into their new home there, which they signed a contract to purchase in July, upon its completion in December.

Days after filing her lawsuit, Turner and Jonas agreed to an Interim Consent Order prohibiting the removal of the children from New York pending further order of the court. Turner is currently staying with their daughters in NYC, while Jonas is on tour with The Jonas Brothers.

Paramore releases “almost” remix album ‘Re: This Is Why’

Paramore has dropped a surprise ‘almost’ remix album titled ‘Re: This Is Why’, featuring reimagined versions of tracks from their latest studio album released earlier this year, This Is Why.

‘Re: This Is Why’ features contributions by Bartees Strange, Claud and Wet Leg; as well as Paramore’s touring partners Foals, The Linda Lindas and Remi Wolf; jazz geniuses DOMi & JD Beck and alternative electronic wizards Panda Bear, Romy & Zane Lowe. ‘Re: This Is Why’ also includes Paramore’s demo of the album track “Sanity.”

Frontwoman Hayley Williams shares: “We’ve long wanted to recognize the connection we have with some of the artists who’ve influenced us as a band and/or who have cited our band as an influence. Some of the songs have been remixed sort of classically, while others were reworked or rewritten. It’s incredible to hear all our worlds colliding. We sent This Is Why – the record – out into the world early this year, with all its messages of disdain, distrust, and sobering self-examination. This is the Reply.”
