Supreme Court adopts formal code of conduct amid scrutiny

On Monday, the Supreme Court issued a code of conduct signed by all nine justices which lays out formal rules, this coming after months of intense scrutiny of the court’s ethics practices.

The new code of conduct includes five canons that the justices should adhere to, including by upholding the “integrity and independence of the judiciary” and avoiding “impropriety and the appearance of impropriety in all activities.” In a statement announcing the new code, the justices said the document was intended to “set out succinctly and gather in one place the ethics rules and principles that guide the conduct of the members of the court,” acknowledging that the lack of a formal code of ethics has created a “misunderstanding that the justices of this court, unlike all other jurists in this country, regard themselves as unrestricted by any ethics rules … To dispel this misunderstanding, we are issuing this code, which largely represents a codification of principles that we have long regarded as governing our conduct.”

The code of conduct lists circumstances in which a justice should disqualify him or herself in a proceeding, namely when their impartiality “might reasonably be questioned, that is, where an unbiased and reasonable person who is aware of all relevant circumstances would doubt that the Justice could fairly discharge his or her duties.” It also states that while a justice may engage in activities outside of the court, they should refrain from those “that detract from the dignity of the justice’s office, interfere with the performance of the justice’s official duties, reflect adversely on the justice’s impartiality, lead to frequent disqualification, or violate” specified limitations.

4 injured in random stabbings on Louisiana Tech University campus

Four people were stabbed Monday morning on the campus of Louisiana Tech University in the north Louisiana city of Ruston. The victims were stabbed as they were leaving the Lambright Sports and Wellness Center on Tech’s Ruston, Louisiana, campus.

Police learned of the stabbings at 9:08 a.m. and had the suspect in custody four minutes later. The university issued a statement saying campus police caught a suspect — 23-year-old student Jacoby Johnson – who was taken into custody after the attack outside the Lambright Sports and Wellness Center. The suspect was being treated at Northern Louisiana Medical Center for injuries received during the initial incident, according to the school.

The school said in a statement: “This appears to be a random act of violence …The suspect then fled south toward main campus and was apprehended by campus police without incident.” Ruston Police Chief Randall Hermes told the Ruston Daily Leader: “It sounds like he ran up behind them and surprised them.”

Of the four victims, one was a graduate student reported in serious but stable condition and flown to nearby Shreveport, Louisiana, two were taken to a local hospital in Ruston, and the other refused treatment. One victim was in critical condition at Northern Louisiana Medical Center shortly before noon local time. Two others were in serious, but stable condition, according to the university. The remaining three victims were not students.

New England Patriots waive cornerback Jack Jones after two seasons

After falling 10-6 to the Colts in Germany on Sunday (which dropped them to 2-8 on the year), the New England Patriots have released cornerback Jack Jones after nearly two seasons with the franchise.

Jones’ agent J. Tooson confirmed the news to NFL Media, sharing a statement: “Certainly want to thank the Patriot Organization for drafting Jack. Jack is an immense talent and looks forward to making an immediate contribution on his next team as soon as Sunday.”

Jones joined the Patriots as a fourth-round pick (No. 121 overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Arizona State. Over the course of his tenure, the 25-year-old had promise; however, off-the-field issues helped make his stint with the Patriots short.

Jones’ legal issues date back to his collegiate days when he was arrested and pled guilty to commercial burglary in 2018 for breaking into a Panda Express in Santa Paula, California. During his rookie season, the 5-11, 175 pound Jones was suspended by the Patriots while he was on injured reserve for reportedly being late to a rehab session. This past summer, Jones was arrested at Logan International Airport on gun charges, which were later dropped after the corner agreed to a settlement with the Suffolk County District Attorney that included one year of pretrial probation. He was benched for the start of New England’s Week 9 loss to the Commanders reportedly due to performance issues; and in the Patriots’ Week 10 loss to Indianapolis on Sunday, Jones played 10 defensive snaps.

In 18 career games for New England, Jones totaled 42 tackles, seven pass breakups, and two interceptions.

Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone agrees to contract extension

Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone has agreed on a contract extension on Monday, which will make him one of the NBA’s highest-paid coaches. Malone’s new deal comes after leading the Nuggets to the 2023 NBA championship, the first in franchise history.

Malone — the league’s fourth-longest-tenured coach in the league — has spent eight seasons with Denver, bringing the Nuggets to the playoffs and, ultimately, to an NBA title. Denver’s 16-4 run in the 2023 playoffs was the league’s most dominant since the Golden State Warriors in 2017.  To start the 2023-24 season, Malone has led Denver to a Western Conference-leading 8-2 record thus far.  Overall, he holds a 375-272 (.580) regular-season record with Denver and is 37-31 (.554) in the playoffs.

‘The Marvels’ flops at the box office with one of the worst MCU openings

“The Marvels” — the 33rd MCU film and the sequel to 2019’s billion-dollar predecessor, “Captain Marvel” — was a flop for Disney over the weekend, earning just $63 million internationally and $110 million globall — figures far behind expectations.

‘Captain Marvel’ debuted to a massive $302 million internationally and $455 million globally. That film, which introduced Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers, was released between two of the biggest movies of all time, 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” and 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” Meanwhile, ‘The Marvels’ now ranks as one of the worst worldwide debuts in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Nia DaCosta (“Candyman”) directed “The Marvels,” which features Larson as Captain Marvel, as well as Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel. “The Marvels” has not been well-received critically, either, and hold a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Disney’s CEO Bob Iger has promised a return to quality over quantity, with the studio’s only MCU release being “Deadpool 3” in 2024.
