Adele to receive Sherry Lansing Leadership Award

Adele will receive the prestigious Sherry Lansing Leadership Award during The Hollywood Reporter‘s annual Women in Entertainment breakfast gala, taking place Dec. 7 in Los Angeles. The invite-only gala, attended by more than 750 industry leaders and VIPs, coincides with the release of The Hollywood Reporter’s highly anticipated ‘Women in Entertainment’ issue (on newsstands Dec. 7), which highlights the Power 100, a list of the most powerful female executives and talent in entertainment.

The Sherry Lansing Leadership Award recognizes trailblazers and philanthropists in entertainment and media and was established in honor of Sherry Lansing, the first woman to head a Hollywood studio (Lansing is the former CEO of Paramount Pictures). Past recipients of this honor include Charlize Theron, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand and Viola Davis.

Lansing said: “Adele is a singular talent who has captivated the world with her incredible music. Beyond that, she paved the way for female artists to embrace their authentic selves and define their own voices and careers at a critical moment for women in music, empowering countless other female artists to do the same. I could not be more thrilled that Adele is receiving the award that bears my name.”

Co-editors-in-chief Nekesa Mumbi Moody and Maer Roshan said in a statement: “We are beyond thrilled that Adele will be our Sherry Lansing Leadership Award honoree at this year’s Women in Entertainment event. Adele has had a groundbreaking career that has established her as one of the all-time greats: a brilliant songwriter, a stunning vocalist, a top-notch performer and an artist whose talents have no limit. She has set a standard of excellence not only as a female performer, but a performer, period. Her accolades — from multiple Grammys to her Emmy and Oscar — attest to that. In addition, she’s used her platform to inspire and help others. She is truly deserving of this award.”

5 U.S. service members killed in military aircraft crash during training mission

U.S. officials said Sunday that five U.S. servicepeople were killed when a military helicopter crashed over the eastern Mediterranean Sea during a training mission. All five crew members on board were killed when the aircraft went down “during a routine air refueling mission as part of military training,” according to the military’s European Command. It wasn’t immediately clear which military service the aircraft belonged to.

The military said that the cause is under investigation, but there are no indications of any hostile activity involved. It said on Sunday that “search and rescue efforts began immediately, including nearby U.S. military aircraft and ships.” European Command said that out of respect for the families of the service members and in line with Department of Defense policy, the identities of the crew members are being withheld for 24 hours until the families of those killed have been notified.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement: “we mourn the tragic loss of five U.S. service members during a training accident in the Mediterranean Sea early Saturday morning. While we continue to gather more information about this deadly crash, it is another stark reminder that the brave men and women who defend our great nation put their lives on the line each and every day to keep our country safe.”

One officer killed, three others dead after hostage situation in South Austin, Texas

A SWAT team member and three others were killed after a man barricaded himself in a house in Austin, Texas along with two hostages before opening fire on police officers.

Interim Chief of Police Robin Henderson announced at a press conference that the violent scene unfolded in South Austin, when Austin Police SWAT officers forced entry into the home where the man was allegedly armed with a knife and gun and two trapped hostages. , Henderson said that one woman who managed to escape called police for help, saying that she had been stabbed. Officers responded to the call and forced entry inside but backed out when the suspect opened fire before the SWAT team was then called.

Two officers who were shot were transported to the hospital, with one officer succumbing to his injuries, with the other in stable condition, said Henderson. The suspect and two other victims who were still barricaded inside the home were all pronounced dead at the scene.

The fatal shooting marks the first time in a decade that an Austin Police Department officer was killed in the line of duty, according to reports, and marks the first time in over a decade in which an Austin officer was shot and killed in the line of duty. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said in a post on X: “This is a horrible moment for our city and those who protect us. I thank these courageous public servants and ask that our community hold them close, support them, respect them, and lift them up in prayer.”

Saints QB Derek Carr exits game against Vikings with concussion, shoulder injury

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr exited Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings due to a shoulder injury and a concussion. The Saints also lost wide receiver Michael Thomas to a knee injury in the first quarter, and ruled him out for the remainder of the game by halftime.

Carr’s injury took place after completing a 15-yard pass to Chris Olave, sliding forward in the pocket midway through the third quarter before being hit by Danielle Hunter around the shoulder and brought down by Jaquelin Roy. Carr’s teammates motioned to the sideline for the medical staff, and while he walked off the field without assistance he was eventually taken away on a cart for further examination. Jameis Winston came in and completed the drive for the Saints’ first touchdown of the game.

Carr is in his first year with New Orleans; in his nine seasons with the Raiders, he started 15 or more games per season.

Penn State fires offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich after loss to Michigan

Penn State fired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich on Sunday, one day after their 24-15 loss to rival Michigan on Saturday. Penn State said running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider and tight ends coach Ty Howle will serve as interim offensive coordinators for the final two games against Rutgers and Michigan State. Yurcich has been with Penn State since 2021 as quarterbacks and offensive coordinator. He had stints as quarterbacks coach and coordinator at Texas, Ohio State and Oklahoma State before landing at Penn State.

The Nittany Lions managed just 238 total yards and two touchdowns, and scored just 27 points combined in their two losses against Michigan and No. 3 Ohio State. Coach James Franklin said on Sunday: “We’ve got to do a better job of calling a game to allow a quarterback to get into a rhythm … We thank Mike for his contributions over the last three years but feel it is in our program’s best interest to make a change at this time. We wish him and his family nothing but the best in the future.”

Quarterback Drew Allar has also had an inconsistent first season as a starter; he said on Saturday: “I’m not the type of guy that’s going to put the blame on anybody else. To me, it’s always looking yourself in the mirror at the end of the day and seeing what you did good and bad and just learning from it. It is what it is. I personally feel like I didn’t play well enough to win the game today so that’s what it is.”
