Pope Francis approves historic decision to allow blessings for same-sex couples

Pope Francis has issued a historic decision allowing Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples. According to a document released on Monday from the Vatican’s doctrine office, Pope Francis says allowing same-sex couples to be blessed is “as an expression of the Church’s maternal heart.”  The announcement comes months after the pope had responded to questions formally submitted by five cardinals about the matter. At that time, the 87-year-old pontiff indicated that he would be open to some Catholic priests blessing same-sex unions.

The document stated: “God never turns away anyone who approaches him! Ultimately, a blessing offers people a means to increase their trust in God. … It is a seed of the Holy Spirit that must be nurtured, not hindered.” The doctrine, however, stresses that any any “rites and prayers that could create confusion between what constitutes marriage…and what contradicts it are inadmissible.”

Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández states that the new declaration that the new rule didn’t amend “the traditional doctrine of the church about marriage,” and that it didn’t allow for liturgical rites that resemble the sacrament of marriage. The document stated that the declaration is intended to allow those seeking the blessing “to open one’s life to God, to ask for his help to live better, and live with greater faithfulness. The Church welcomes all who approach God with humble hearts, accompanying them with those spiritual aids that enable everyone to understand and realize God’s will fully in their existence.”

Pope Francis declared his support for the civil unions of same-sex couples in October 2020 during comments featured in the documentary Francesco.  In March 2021, the Vatican said that the Catholic community should welcome gay people with “respect and sensitivity,” and in July 2023, the pontiff said that laws criminalizing homosexuality are “unfair….We are all children of God, and God loves us as we are.”

NFL suspends Pittsburgh Steelers’ Damontae Kazee for rest of season after hit

The NFL announced on Monday that they have suspended Pittsburgh Steelers safety Damontae Kazee for the rest of the 2023 season, including the postseason, for repeated violations of its health and safety rules.

NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan said in a news release: “When players violate the rules intended to protect player safety on a repeated basis, and particularly when the violations carry with them a significant risk of injury to an opposing player, it is appropriate to impose substantially greater penalties.”

Kazee’s latest incident occurred in the second quarter of the Steelers game against the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday in Indianapolis, when the wide receiver lowered his head and hit Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., delivering a strong blow to his head/neck area. The seven-year veteran was then given a penalty for unnecessary roughness and ejected from the game, while Pittman entered the concussion protocol as a result, and was unable to return to the game.

While Kazee is able to appeal the suspension, he will miss upcoming games against the Cincinnati Bengals, Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens. Kazoo totaled 61 combined tackles, three passes defensed, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries in 14 appearances this season. He totaled 332 combined tackles, 22 passes defensed, 16 interceptions, seven forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 92 career appearances.

Jonathan Majors found guilty of harassment and assault; fired by Disney/Marvel Studios

Actor Jonathan Majors was found guilty by a Manhattan jury of one count of assault in the third degree and another count of harassment, but acquitted him on two other counts. The six-person jury deliberated for about four hours before rendering their verdict on Monday, December 18. In addition to the two guilty verdicts, Majors was also found not guilty of one count of assault in the third degree and the other charge for aggravated harassment in the second degree. Majors, 34, was seated with his family, lawyers, and girlfriend Meagan Good when the verdict was read. He had pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.

The charges were brought against Majors by his ex Grace Jabbari, with the actor arrested in New York City after he allegedly assaulted Jabbari in the backseat of a private vehicle. Jabbari testified she grabbed Majors phone after seeing a text message from another woman. and as Majors attempted to retrieve his phone, she felt “a hard blow” across her head that resulted in bruising, swelling and substantial pain. Prosecutors alleged that Majors was manipulative and controlling throughout their two-year relationship, with the jury being shown prior text messages between Jabbari and Majors where he had dissuaded his ex-girlfriend from going to the hospital to treat a head wound.

Within hours after the verdict had been made public, Disney/Marvel Studios fired the Emmy-nominated actor, who had played Kang the Conquerer. Judge Michael Gaffey will announce the sentencing on Feb. 6, with Majors faces up to a year in jail.
