Maine court defers decision on Trump ballot eligibility citing 14th Amendment

On Wednesday, a judge in Maine told state election officials they would defer a decision and wait for the Supreme Court to rule on Donald Trump’s eligibility for the 2024 presidential ballot. Trump had asked the judge to overturn a prior decision that removed him from the Maine ballot, but the judge declined to do so, until the Supreme Court weighs in. Wednesday’s decision means that Trump’s name is still on the ballot for the Maine GOP primary on March 5, aka Super Tuesday. Ratified after the Civil War, the 14th Amendment says officials who take an oath to uphold the Constitution are banned from future office if they “engaged in insurrection,” but the Constitution doesn’t say how to enforce the ban.

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a similar case from Colorado early next month. Maine and Colorado are so far the only states to disqualify Trump based on his role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. A group of voters filed a challenge in December and Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows ruled that Trump was ineligible for office; ballot challenges are first handled by the secretary of state under Maine law, and then can be appealed in state courts. Trump and his GOP allies have slammed Bellows, a Democrat, and have unsuccessfully tried to take her off the case.

Kennebec County Superior Court Judge Michaela Murphy, who issued Wednesday’s ruling, was appointed to the state bench by a Democratic governor in 2007 and then re-appointed in 2015 by then-Gov. Paul LePage, an outspoken Republican and Trump supporter.

Trump and the challengers asked Judge Murphy to pause any final ballot decisions in Maine until a ruling from the Supreme Court. Murphy said it was “rare” to grant such a request, but “under these circumstances, it is appropriate … Because many of the issues presented in this case are likely to be resolved, narrowed, or rendered moot by the Supreme Court’s decision in (the Colorado case), the Court concludes that a remand is necessary … While it is impossible to know what the Supreme Court will decide, hopefully it will at least clarify what role, if any, state decision-makers, including secretaries of state and state judicial officers, play in adjudicating claims of disqualification brought under Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment.”

Raptors trade forward Pascal Siakam to Pacers for Bruce Brown, 3 first-round picks

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Toronto Raptors have agreed to trade two-time All-NBA forward and 2019 NBA champion Pascal Siakam to the Indiana Pacers, in return for Bruce Brown and three first-round draft picks. Wojnarowski reports Siakam “is excited about the deal to the Pacers and expected to be eager to work out a new contract with the franchise this summer.”

Toronto is continuing to rebuild after the trade of O.G. Anunoby to the New York Knicks in December, in which the Raptors received 23-year-old RJ Barrett, 24-year-old Immanuel Quickley and a second-round pick in return for Anunoby.

Siakam, 29, a two-time All-Star, joins All-Star point guard Tyrese Halliburton and two-way center Myles Turner as part of the core in Indiana if he remains with the Pacers. Siakam is averaging 22.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists this season while shooting 52.2% from the field and 31.7% from 3-point distance. Siakam is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason at the conclusion of a four-year, $137 million deal, when he’ll reportedly seek a max extension.

The 27-year-old Brown was a key player for the Denver Nuggets in their run to the NBA championship last season, signing a two-year, $45 million contract with the Pacers last offseason. He leaves Indiana after playing 33 games with the Pacers.

Golden State vs. Jazz game postponed after death of Warriors’ assistant coach Dejan Milojević

The NBA announced it has postponed Wednesday night’s game between the Golden State Warriors and Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City after the sudden death of Warriors assistant coach Dejan Milojević. Per a statement from the Warriors, Milojević, 46, was hospitalized in Utah after suffering a heart attack at a private team dinner Tuesday night in Utah; he died Wednesday morning despite “life-saving efforts.”

The Warriors later posted a follow-up statement announcing Milojević’s death, with head coach Steve Kerr sharing: “We are absolutely devastated by Dejan’s sudden passing. This is a shocking and tragic blow for everyone associated with the Warriors and an incredibly difficult time for his family, friends, and all of us who had the incredible pleasure to work with him. In addition to being a terrific basketball coach, Dejan was one of the most positive and beautiful human beings I have ever known, someone who brought joy and light to every single day with his passion and energy. We grieve with and for his wife, Natasa, and their children, Nikola and Masa. Their loss is unfathomable.”

Milojević, a Serbian who played for 15 years in Europe, joined the Warriors’ staff in 2021. Milojević was well-regarded, famous for working with Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokić. Milojević coached Jokic on Mega Basket from 2012-15 and has been credited with some of Jokic’s foundational basketball development. Milojević’s Mega Basket teams, which he coached from 2012 to 2020, produced 11 players selected in the NBA Draft, including Jokić, Ivica Zubac, Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot, Vlatko Čančar and Goga Bitadze.

The league did not set a new date for the Warriors-Jazz game scheduled for Wednesday night, saying only that it would be postponed to a “later time.”

LeAnn Rimes undergoes surgery to remove precancerous cells

LeAnn Rimes shared an update on her health in an Instagram post, revealing that she underwent a “minor” surgical procedure to remove precancerous cells following an abnormal pap smear.

Rimes, 41, wrote: “Over the past couple of years, I’ve either been going through dental surgeries or recovering from a vocal hemorrhage around this time, which was all pretty depressing. But, I have to say, this January has been joyful and easeful. However, yesterday, I underwent a minor surgery … Several months back, I had my annual pap smear, which came back abnormal. In fact, I’ve had abnormal paps since I was 17 and through regular pap smears and colposcopies, my doctors have been keeping an eye on any cellular changes.” A subsequent colposcopy and lab testing on her pap smear sample led Rimes to being diagnosed with high-grade cervical dysplasia, or precancerous cervical cell changes. Rimes continued: “I consulted with my doctor and we jointly decided that a LEEP procedure would be in my best interest, in order to remove the high grade, abnormal, precancerous cells. I’ve had enough trauma in my life already, so I prefer to be out and comfortable … So, ladies, please don’t put off getting your annual pap. My men, too… make sure you get your annual physical, minus the pap smear 😂.”

Rimes ended her post by saying that early cervical cancer doesn’t typically show symptoms, and early detection can be lifesaving: “I believe the more shares and conversations we have around women’s wellness, the more we take the ewww factor out of talking about vaginas and put the power back in our hands, to be able to take the best care of our bodies that we can.”

Sheryl Crow shares video for new song “Evolution”

Sheryl Crow has released the title track from her upcoming album “Evolution,” as well as sharing the lyric video for the new song. Evolution is Crow’s first album since 2019’s Threads.

“Evolution”, which follows the release of the album’s first single “Alarm Clock,” is produced by Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Keith Urban, Turnstile). Said Crow of the new album: “I started sending just a couple of demos to Mike, but the songs just kept flowing out of me and it was pretty obvious this was going to be an album. This music and these lyrics came from sitting in the quiet and writing from a deep soul place. I said I’d never make another record, thought there was no point to it. But this music comes from my soul. And I hope whoever hears this record can feel that.”

Evolution is out everywhere on March 29th; you can take a look at the lyric video for the title track: here.

Black Keys announce new album ‘Ohio Players’

The Black Keys have announced their 12th studio album, Ohio Players, will arrive on April 5. Ohio Players arrives on the heels of the band’s 2022 album, Dropout Boogie, and will feature contributions from Dan “The Automator” Nakamura, Beck, Noel Gallagher, Greg Kurstin and others.

Drummer Patrick Carney explains: “We had this epiphany: ‘We can call our friends to help us make music.’ It’s funny because we both write songs with other people – Dan all the time [as a solo artist and producer], me when I’m producing a record. That’s what we do.” Guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach adds: “No matter who we work with, it never feels like we’re sacrificing who we are. It only feels like it adds some special flavor. We just expanded that palette with people we wanted to work with. We were there to support them and their ideas, to do whatever we could to see that moment flourish. But when it came time to finish the album, it was just Pat and me.”

The band have also released the album’s first single, “Beautiful People (Stay High)”, written by Dan Auerbach, Patrick Carney, Beck and Dan the Automator; you take take a listen – here.
