Judge allows Donald Trump to speak at closing arguments at NY cvil fraud trial

On Thursday in the New York civil fraud trial of former President Donald Trump, Judge Arthur Engoron allowed Trump to speak at closing arguments, despite having denied a request from Trump to speak a day earlier. After Trump’s defense gave their closing argument in the morning, the former president left the courtroom and held a press conference at the Trump Building in New York. The prosecution delivered its closing arguments Thursday afternoon.

Trump was allowed to address the court, and Engoron directed Trump to promise that he would limit his comments to the facts of the case, to which Trump replied the case “goes outside just the facts.” Trump, who spoke for about five minutes, again accused Attorney General Laetitia James of being politically motivated in bringing the case against him and the Trump Organization, calling his financial statements “perfect” and saying the case is a “political witch hunt,” and shared his criticism of Judge Engoron but said the judge’s decision “may surprise some people. We’ll see what happens.” Trump’s attorney Chris Kise later delivered closing arguments for about two hours. ”

After he left the courtroom, Trump told reporters the case is a “political witch hunt the likes of which nobody has ever seen before. They owe me damages for what they’ve done. We’re a very innocent company. What we’ve run is a great company. That’s been proven. A very highly successful company.”

In the courtroom, Trump’s attorneys added that James attempted to “intimidate” Trump and other executives in his organization, and Kise told Engoron that his decision could have an impact on other large corporations in New York. Trump and the Trump Organization, headed by his sons Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., face a potential $250 million penalty for committing fraud. They were found guilty in the fall of inflating the value of their real estate properties.

Hunter Biden pleads not guilty at arraignment on tax charges

Before District Judge Mark Scarsi in the Central District of California on Thursday, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to nine federal tax charges. Federal prosecutors charged Hunter Biden in December with nine counts of tax crimes, including three felony and six misdemeanor charges related to his alleged failure to file and pay taxes, evasion of assessment and filing a false or fraudulent tax return. If convicted, Hunter Biden faces up to 17 years in prison.

In the 56-page indictment, prosecutors alleged Hunter Biden earned more than $7 million in gross income when he failed to pay taxes. They said he funded an “extravagant lifestyle” and evaded taxes by classifying some personal expenditures as business deductions. His indictments came after a plea agreement on two misdemeanor tax charges and a diversion agreement stemming from the firearms charge unraveled in court in July 2023 when the judge questioned whether the agreement would allow Hunter Biden to avoid potential future charges, as well as the charges related to his taxes.

The tax charges filed in California were brought by special counsel David Weiss in the second federal indictment of the president’s son secured by his office. Weiss, who was appointed U.S. attorney for Delaware by former President Donald Trump and named special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland in 2023, charged Hunter Biden with three felony gun charges in the state of Delaware, related to his alleged unlawful possession of a firearm. He pleaded not guilty to the gun charges in October.

The hearing is still underway where the conditions of his release and the timing for the case and timing for pre-trial motions will likely be determined.

Raptors’ Darko Rajaković fined $25K for criticizing referees following loss vs. Lakers

The NBA announced Thursday it has fined Toronto Raptors head coach Darko Rajaković $25,000 for publicly criticizing the officials following the Raptor’s 132-131 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.

Quotes in which Rajaković expressed his anger over the disparity in the calls in the fourth quarter read (as transcribed by ESPN):  “It’s outrageous. What happened tonight, this is completely B.S. This is shame. Shame for the referees. Shame for the league to allow this. Twenty-three free throws for them, and we get two free throws in the fourth quarter? Like, how to play the game? I understand respect for All-Stars and all that, but we have star players on our team as well …How [is it] possible that Scottie Barnes, who is All-Star-caliber player in this league, he goes every single time to the rim with force and trying to get to the rim without flopping and not trying to get foul calls, he gets two free throws for a whole game? How is that possible? How are you going to explain that to me? …. They had to win tonight? If that’s the case, just let us know, so we don’t show up for the game. Just give them a win. But that was not fair tonight. And this is not happening first time for us. Scottie Barnes is going to be [an] All-Star. He’s going to be the face of this league, and what’s happening over here during whole season … it’s complete crap.”

Los Angeles shot 23 free throws in the fourth quarter alone and ended up with a 36-13 advantage for the game. Anthony Davis alone shot 11 free throws in the fourth and 14 for the game, which was more than the entire Toronto team. The Raptors are currently in 12th place in the Eastern Conference at 15-23 and 1.5 games behind the Brooklyn Nets for the 10th seed and final spot in the play-in tournament. This is Rajaković’s first season at the helm.

Coach Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots part ways after 24 seasons

Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots have mutually agreed to part ways after 24 seasons, the team announced.

The 71-year-old Belichick said in a media address on Thursday: “Robert (Kraft) and I, after a series of discussions, have mutually agreed to part ways. For me, this is a day of gratitude and celebration. I’ll start with Robert and his family. So much thanks for the opportunity to be the coach here for 24 years. It’s an amazing opportunity, and I received tremendous support. We had a vision of building a winner, building a championship football team here. That’s exceeded my wildest dreams and expectations, the amount of success we were able to achieve together through a lot of hard work and the contributions of so many people. Very proud of that, and I will always have those great memories. I’ll carry those with me the rest of my life … I will always be a Patriot. I look forward to coming back here but, at this time, we’re going to move on. I look forward and am excited for the future. Always very very appreciative of the opportunity here, the support here and Robert what you’ve done for me. Thank you.”

Patriots owner Robert Kraft said: “At heart, I will always be a sentimental sports fan, so this is a very emotional day for me. Some of my happiest and most memorable moments were celebrated with my family during Bill’s tenure here. I recognize that it also is a very emotional day for many of our fans, and most of our fans. As it represents the end of an era, one that hopefully will always be celebrated in this region. The man standing to my left brought the leadership and coaching skills that were needed to make this type of unprecedented success that we have had possible. Coach Belichick will forever be celebrated as a legendary sports icon here in New England, and I believe go in as a Pro Football Hall of Famer on the first ballot. Why? Because he is the greatest coach of all time, which makes this decision to part ways so hard. But this is a move that we mutually agreed that is needed at this time. What Bill accomplished with us, in my opinion, will never be replicated. And the fact that it was done in the salary-cap and free-agency era makes it even more extraordinary. I thank Coach Bill for his hard work and dedication. It will be difficult to see him in a cut-off hoodie on the sideline, but I always will continue to wish him continued success except when he’s playing our beloved Patriots. I thank you all for coming here today and being part of this celebration.”

In 24 seasons with New England, Belichick led the most decorated dynasty in NFL history – winning six Super Bowls, tied for most by a franchise in NFL history, with nine Super Bowl appearances. Belichick has more Super Bowl appearances as a head coach than every franchise save one, the Patriots (11). Over the course of those 24 seasons, New England compiled a 266-120 regular-season record and won 17 AFC East titles — including 11 straight from 2009-2019, the longest streak in NFL history. The 17 division titles are the most ever by any head coach with a single club. Belichick generated 296 total wins with the Patriots, including playoffs, the second-most by any head coach with a single franchise in NFL history (behind George Halas with the Bears at 324).
