Harvard president Claudine Gay resigns amid claims of plagiarism, antisemitism backlash

Harvard University President Claudine Gay resigned Tuesday amid plagiarism accusations, as well as the backlash over her response to anti-Semitism on campus. Gay said she is resigning to allow the Harvard community to navigate the controversy “with a focus on the institution rather than any individual.”

Gay wrote in her resignation letter Tuesday: “It is with a heavy heart but a deep love for Harvard that I write to share that I will be stepping down as president. My deep sense of connection to Harvard and its people has made it all the more painful to witness the tensions and divisions that have riven our community in recent months, weakening the bonds of trust and reciprocity that should be our sources of strength and support in times of crisis. Amidst all of this, it has been distressing to have doubt cast on my commitments to confronting hate and to upholding scholarly rigor — two bedrock values that are fundamental to who I am — and frightening to be subjected to personal attacks and threats fueled by racial animus.”

Gay’s resignation follows a complaint reported by the Washington Free Beacon detailing six new accusations of plagiarism in Gay’s scholarly work, bringing the total to nearly 50. Alan M. Garber, the university provost, will serve as interim president during the search for a replacement for Gay, who according to The Harvard Crimson served the shortest presidency in the university’s history (Gay’s tenure began in July). Gay will resume her faculty position at Harvard.

Further controversy arose surrounding Gay after criticism that she, and the university, failed to forcefully condemn the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas. Gay faced investigations by the Harvard Corp. and the U.S. House of Representatives after her Dec. 5 testimony before the House Education and the Workforce Committee related to antisemitism on campus, and received backlash for appearing to evade questions about antisemitism and whether students would be disciplined for calling for the genocide of Jews.

A statement from Harvard’s governing board read: “While President Gay has acknowledged missteps and has taken responsibility for them, it is also true that she has shown remarkable resilience in the face of deeply personal and sustained attacks. While some of this has played out in the public domain, much of it has taken the form of repugnant and in some cases racist vitriol directed at her through disgraceful emails and phone calls. We condemn such attacks in the strongest possible terms.”

No evidence of terrorism in crash that killed 2, injured several more in Rochester NY

Police in Rochester, New York say there is no evidence of terrorism in the New Year’s Day crash that killed two people and injured several more after a concert in Rochester, New York. The suspect, 25-year-old Michael Avery of the Syracuse area, died Monday night from injuries sustained in the crash, officials said.  Avery’s SUV was stashed with gas canisters when he sped toward the pedestrians, and collided with another car.

The crash happened shortly before 1 a.m. as police officers were directing traffic after a concert by the band “moe” at the Kodak Center theater complex. At 12:52 a.m., Avery drove his Ford Expedition on West Ridge Road toward where police officers were stopping traffic to allow pedestrians to cross, however “at this time, Avery sped up, crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and appears to have intentionally been driving towards the pedestrian crossing.” Avery crashed into the Outlander, sending both vehicles “through a group of pedestrians that were in the crosswalk.” The two passengers in the Outlander were killed and the driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. The collision also caused an explosion and a large blaze that took the fire department more than an hour to extinguish.

In an update on Tuesday, Rochester Police Chief David M. Smith said that they have spoken with Avery’s family and they believed he “may have been suffering from possible undiagnosed mental health issues,” but said that “we have not recovered any information that his actions were motivated by any form of political or social biases,” adding that they believe that Avery acted alone. Avery’s motive is not clear and police urge the public to come forward with information. The FBI Buffalo Field Office confirmed they are assisting the Rochester Police Department in the investigation.

Police say that Avery had traveled to Rochester in his personal vehicle on or about Dec. 27 and checked into the WoodSpring Suites in Greece, a suburb of Rochester. Two days later, he rented a Ford Expedition from a car rental agency at the Rochester airport and left his personal car in the airport parking garage. Between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Dec. 30, he made “at least half a dozen purchases of gasoline and gas containers at different locations” throughout Monroe and Ontario counties.

Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay promises return in 2024-25 campaign

Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay said that he will return for the 2024-25 campaign, after contemplating retirement last off-season.  When asked if he will return to coach the team next season, McVay, in his seventh-year with the organization, announced on his weekly Coach McVay Show: “that I can promise you.”

The 37-year-old McVay is under contract with the Rams through 2026; he owns a 69-45-0 record with the franchise, and is just six wins behind John Robinson (75-68-0), the franchise’s all-time winningest coach. The Super Bowl LVI winner’s 69 wins are the 10th most among active coaches, and he led the Rams to the playoffs in five of his eight seasons. McVay’s Rams (9-7) were 3-6 through 10 weeks this season, and later went on to win six of their next seven games before clinching a wild-card playoff berth.

The Rams will play the San Francisco 49ers (12-4) — the No. 1 seed in the NFC — in their final game of the regular season at 4:25 p.m. EST Sunday in Santa Clara, CA.

Dalvin Cook being waived by the Jets with 1 game left in the season

The New York Jets are waiving running back Dalvin Cook before the final game of the season. The 28-year-old Cook signed a one-year deal worth $7 million — including $5.8 million guaranteed — during the summer with the Jets. NFL Network reports that both sides mutually agreed to part ways, citing Cook’s agents LAA Sports & Entertainment, who confirmed the news to The Associated Press. Cook will go through waivers and would become a free agent if he goes unclaimed.

Cook’s role in the Jets’ offense never materialized after Aaron Rodgers missed the season with a torn left Achilles tendon in his debut.  This season, Cook has a career-low 214 yards rushing on 67 carries and no touchdowns. Cook also has a career low 15 catches for 78 yards. and had no touches on offense in the past two games.

New York coach Robert Saleh said of Cook: “Dalvin has been great. I know this has been a hard season for him. It’s been a hard season for all of us. I appreciate the heck out of his professionalism and the way he goes about his business and who he is around the building, the support he gives his teammates and the support he gives the running back room.” Saleh also made note of Cook’s frustration by his lack of playing time: “I haven’t played professional football, but being around it, you know when a player is hurting and I know he’s hurting, but his story is not over. He still has plenty of juice in his legs, but he’s been great.”

Cher files for conservatorship of son, Elijah Blue Allman

Cher has filed for a conservatorship over her son, Elijah Blue Allman. The singer/actress filed to be the sole conservator of her son’s estate due to alleged substance abuse issues, with claims that Allman is “substantially unable to manage his financial resources.”

Legal documents obtained by People revealed stated that “Elijah is entitled to regular distributions from the Trust,” and his mother, Cher “is concerned that any funds distributed to Elijah will be immediately spent on drugs, leaving Elijah with no assets to provide for himself and putting Elijah’s life at risk.” The filing added that a conservator is “urgently needed … to protect Elijah’s property from loss or injury, as he is currently unable to manage his assets due to severe mental health and substance abuse issues.” Also mentioned in the filing is Elijah’s estranged wife, Marieangela King, who was said to be ‘unfit’ to be his conservator as “their tumultuous relationship has been marked by a cycle of drug addiction and mental health crises.”

Earlier this year, Cher responded to reports that she hired four men to forcibly remove Elijah from a New York City hotel room in November 2022. The reports stemmed from King’s divorce documents she filed last December, which were made public. Cher later denied the allegations, telling People, “that rumor is not true.”

A hearing for a temporary order is set for January 5th, 2024 and a hearing for a permanent order will take place on March 6th.

Motley Crue share details on their ‘old school’ new music

Motley Crue guitarist John 5 is sharing details about the new music that the band is working on, calling the band’s sound ‘old school’, and similar to the group’s debut album, “Too Fast For Love”.

John 5 told Illinois Entertainer: “We have recorded some songs with Bob Rock (producer). Just the other day, Nikki (Sixx / bass) called me and he was playing guitar over the phone, and he’ll play a riff, and he’ll sing this melody, and it sounded like it could be something off of Too Fast For Love. It’s just natural for him to write these songs that I have loved and lots of other people have loved. I think we’re always going to make new music, because, man, this guy is pumping out amazing lyrics and great music. When we all get together, it’s pretty magical.”

Drummer Tommy Lee also recently spoke about new music in an interview The Desert Sun: “Wait until you hear it, it’s insane. It’s not a full album, but that might be down the road a bit. We’re always writing and doing stuff, so that’s always a possibility down the road. But we just went to the studio not too long ago and recorded three insane tracks and one of them is called ‘Dogs Of War.’ We’re just finishing up the video for it. For those jonesing for some new Crue, people are going to bug out. John 5 is playing on it, the guitar work is incredible and it sounds sick.”
