Usher and Jennifer Goicoechea marry in post-Super Bowl ceremony

Court documents have confirmed that Usher and his longtime girlfriend Jennifer Goicoechea were married in Las Vegas just hours after the singer’s halftime show performance during Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium. A rep for Usher told People: “We can confirm that Usher and Jennifer Goicoechea took the next step in their relationship and did get married on Sunday night in Las Vegas, surrounded by close friends and family. They both look forward to continuing to raise their children together surrounded by love and thank everyone for the well wishes.”

The AP reports that the couple were married in an intimate ceremony at Vegas Weddings’ outdoor Terrace Gazebo. Melody Willis-Williams, president of Vegas Weddings, said in a statement sent to The Hollywood Reporter: “Congratulations to the Newlyweds! What a great game and Usher’s performance was phenomenal! We were beyond thrilled to host in this epic day for Usher and his new wife.”

Usher, 45, and Goicoechea have been together five years and share two young children together. In attendance at their wedding were Usher’s mother, Jonnetta Patton, and their ceremony was officiated by Rev. Ronald Joseph Polrywka — who is known locally as Elvis impersonator Ron DeCar.

This is Usher’s third marriage; he was previously married to fashion designer Tameka Foster, with whom he shares sons Usher “Cinco” Raymond V, 16, and Navid Ely, 15.  The singer was then married for three years to former manager, Grace Miguel, who he divorced in December 2018.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin cancels overseas trip to Brussels following hospitalization

U.S. defense officials said on Monday that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has canceled a trip to Brussels this week following his hospitalization on Sunday due to “an emergent bladder issue”. News of Austin’s hospitalization had raised questions as to whether Austin would be healthy enough to continue with that planned travel. U.S. defense officials said to multiple media outlets: “The secretary will no longer travel to Brussels and Wednesday’s Ukraine Defense Contact Group will now be held virtually.”

The Pentagon had announced last week that Austin would be traveling to Brussels to attend a monthly meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, the more than 50 countries providing military aid to Ukraine, and a separate meeting of NATO defense ministers. Austin’s latest hospitalization on Sunday was made public shortly after his security detail took him to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center seeking care for the new issue that appeared tied to his secret hospitalization in early January for complications resulting from a surgical procedure to treat his prostate cancer.

Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary, said in a recent statement: “At approximately 4:55 pm today, Secretary Austin transferred the functions and duties of the office of the Secretary of Defense to Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks. The Deputy Secretary of Defense has assumed the functions and duties. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the White House, and Congress have been notified.”

Late Sunday night, Dr. John Maddox and Dr. Gregory Chesnut, Austin’s doctors at Walter Reed, said he had been admitted to the critical care unit.  Their statement read: “Earlier today, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III was transported by his security detail to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to be seen for symptoms suggesting an emergent bladder issue. Tonight, after a series of tests and evaluations, the Secretary was admitted into the critical care unit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for supportive care and close monitoring. At this time, it is not clear how long Secretary Austin will remain hospitalized. The current bladder issue is not expected to change his anticipated full recovery. His cancer prognosis remains excellent. Updates on the Secretary’s condition will be provided as soon as possible.”

Austin recently faced scrutiny and criticism after undergoing a surgical procedure for prostate cancer on Dec. 22, which led to a urinary tract infection and serious intestinal complications which led to his hospitalization on Jan. 1. However, the White House didn’t learn of Austin’s diagnosis or hospitalization  or three days, to which Austin recently apologized for: “I should have told the president about my cancer diagnosis, and should also have told my team and the American public. I take full responsibility. I apologize to my teammates and to the American people.”  Austin has said he directly apologized to Biden and told him he was “deeply sorry” for not letting him know of his diagnosis immediately.

Rifle of shooter at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood megachurch had ‘Palestine’ written on it

According to senior law enforcement officials, the assault style-type rifle used by the woman shot and killed Sunday afternoon at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston had “Palestine” written on it. Police have stated that two off-duty officers at the church returned fire, striking the shooter and killing her at about 1:50 p.m. The child, identified as the shooters’ son, was also struck during the incident and was in critical condition. Police Chief Troy Finner said at a news conference that the boy was approximately 5 years old.

Osteen said that the shooting happened between services as people were arriving for Spanish service. About 45,000 people attend services there every week, making it one of the largest megachurches in the country. In a statement on Facebook, Osteen urged his congregation to lean on their faith to cope with anguish: “Our community is devastated by today’s events and grateful for the swift actions of law enforcement. Together, we will rise above this tragedy and stand firm in our commitment to love and support one another.”

The shooter, identified as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, 36, also made several undisclosed statements during the course of the incident, and law enforcement officials added that Moreno previously went by another male name. Moreno also stated she had a bomb, but a search of the vehicle showed there were no explosive devices. Police Chief Finner  said that one of the off-duty officers involved the incident is an agent with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, and the other is a Houston police officer. Officials are investigating possible motives, but have not conclusively say what led to the shooting. They have not ruled out terrorism or hate crime-related motives.

Law enforcement records also revealed that Moreno had at least six prior arrests since 2005, including unlawful carrying of a weapon, which she pleaded guilty to; evading arrest; and assault on a public official, which was pleaded to a lesser charge.

UCLA names former Bruins RB DeShaun Foster as their new coach

Just three days after the sudden departure of Chip Kelly, UCLA has hired longtime assistant DeShaun Foster as their new coach. Foster played running back for the Bruins and later worked as an assistant under both Jim L. Mora and Kelly; he was hired as the running back coach for the Las Vegas Raiders 10 days ago, but will now be returning to his alma mater.  In an unprecedented move, Chip Kelly left the Bruins on Friday to become the offensive coordinator at Ohio State.

UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond said in a statement: “While undergoing a comprehensive search for our new head coach, DeShaun resonated from the start and throughout the whole process. We are looking for a coach with integrity, energy and passion; someone who is a great teacher, who develops young men, is a great recruiter and fully embraces the NIL landscape to help our student-athletes. DeShaun checks all of those boxes and then some. He is a leader of men and a true Bruin. I am excited to partner with him as we usher UCLA Football into an exciting new era.”

Following his time with Bruins from 1998-2001 in which he finished with 44 touchdowns and 3,129 yards rushing (both of which rank top-three in program history), Foster spent seven years in the NFL and began his coaching career in 2013 as a student assistant at UCLA under Mora. He was a graduate assistant with the Bruins from 2014-15, and after a brief stint at Texas Tech in 2016 he returned to the staff in 2017 as running backs coach through the 2023 season. Foster was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022.

Said Foster: “This is a dream come true. I always envisioned being a Bruin ever since I was young, and now being the head coach at my alma mater is such a surreal feeling, and I’m grateful for this opportunity. The foundation of this program will be built on discipline, respect and enthusiasm. These are phenomenal young men, and I’m excited to hit the ground running.”

Several 49ers players say they didn’t know rules for OT after Super Bowl loss

After their Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime, several San Francisco 49ers players admitted that they didn’t know the rules for OT in the NFL playoffs until the big game.

The NFL changed its playoff overtime rules in 2022; previously, playoff overtime rules were the same as the regular season. According to those rules, if the first team to possess the ball scores a touchdown, they win the game. But as of 2022, each team gets at least one possession, even if the first possession results in an offensive touchdown, in the playoffs.

The 49ers elected to receive the ball first in overtime, going on to kick a field goal. The Chiefs then won the game by scoring a touchdown on the next possession. Had the 49ers elected to receive, and even if the Chiefs scored, they may have gone for a fourth-down conversion and extended the contest, or win the game.

Meeting with reporters outside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk said the 49ers didn’t review the rules before the session, telling reporters: “You know what? I didn’t even realize the playoff rules were different in overtime. I assumed you just want the ball to score a touchdown and win. But I guess that’s not the case. I don’t totally know the strategy there.” Defensive lineman Arik Armstead also said he wasn’t aware of the rules until the NFL posted them on a scoreboard, and added that his teammates were surprised to read the rules when they were posted at Allegiant Stadium. Said Armstead: “I didn’t even know about the new playoff overtime rule. It was a surprise to me. I didn’t know what was going on, in terms of that. They put it on the scoreboard and everyone was thinking, even if you score, they get a chance still.”

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said coaches discussed the analytic strategy of taking the ball first and “thought it would be better.” He also said they made the decision hoping to get the ball a second time in overtime. Shanahan added he was proud of the 49ers performances during the 2023-24 campaign: “Obviously, we’re hurting, our team’s hurting, but that’s how it goes when you put yourself out there. I’m real proud of our guys, no regrets with our team. I thought our guys played so hard. Not everything was perfect by any means, but if I’m going to lose with a group of guys, I’d do it with those guys any time and we’ll get over this and come back next year ready to go.”

On the flip side, Chiefs players said they were recently coached on the current overtime rules, with safety Justin Reid saying that the Chiefs constantly reviewed the overtime rules: “We talked about it all year. We talked about it in training camp. about how the rules were different in the regular season versus the playoffs. Every week in the playoffs, we talked about the overtime rules. We knew what our game plan was, had we won the coin toss, or whether he’d wanted to defer or not, and what our plan was from there.”
