Boeing ousts leader of 737 Max program in management shake-up

On Wednesday, Boeing announced that the head of the company’s 737 Max program is leaving the company.  The move comes in the wake of a January mishap that has cost the aircraft manufacturer billions of dollars in value. On January 5, a Boeing-manufactured Alaska Airlines plane door panel blew out midair over Portland, forcing an emergency landing.

In an email to employees Wednesday Boeing Executive Vice President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes Stanley A. Deal announced several leadership changes which included Ed Clark, the head of the company’s Boeing’s 737 Max program, being removed from his position.  Deal said: “Ed departs with my, and our, deepest gratitude for his many significant contributions over nearly 18 years of dedicated service to Boeing.” Deal said the changes are part of the company’s “enhanced focus on ensuring that every airplane we deliver meets or exceeds all quality and safety requirements …Our customers demand, and deserve, nothing less.”

The Alaska Airlines incident prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to temporarily ground off all Boeing 737 Max 9 airplanes operating in the U.S. and subsequently increase oversight over Boeing aircraft production. Prior to that incident, two Max 8 passenger jets crashed as a result of problems with a flight stabilization feature on the aircraft, killing a total of 346 people. Boeing 737 Max airplanes were subsequently grounded worldwide from March 2019 to November 2020. Airlines worldwide have been operating Max 9s, the version of the 737 Max that succeeded the Max 8, without a major incident since it entered service in 2018. However, the FAA suspended all Boeing Max production expansion in the wake of the January incident.

Biden administration cancels student loan debt of more than 150,000 borrowers under new plan

The Biden administration announced on Wednesday that it is canceling $1.2 billion in student debt for about 153,000 borrowers who took out relatively modest student loans and have been repaying it for the last decade or more, and who were eligible under the Saving on a Valuable Education Plan (SAVE).

The SAVE program provides relief for people who have been making payments for more than 10 years on loans of $12,000 or less. According to a fact sheet from the White House, a borrower can qualify for the forgiveness if they’re enrolled in the SAVE repayment plan and “have been making at least 10 years of payments, and have originally taken out $12,000 or less for college.” It also said that “for every $1,000 borrowed above $12,000, a borrower can receive forgiveness after an additional year of payments.”

Borrowers will receive an email from President Joe Biden informing them their debts have been forgiven, with a message saying, “I hope this relief gives you a little more breathing room. I’ve heard from countless people who have told me that relieving the burden of their student loan debt will allow them to support themselves and their families, buy their first home, start a small business, and move forward with life plans they’ve put on hold.”

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said: “With today’s announcement, we are once again sending a clear message to borrowers who had low balances: If you’ve been paying for a decade, you’ve done your part, you deserve relief … These are historic efforts that reflect the president’s commitment, again, to deliver as much relief as possible to as many borrowers as possible as quickly as possible. Bottom line is this: We’re providing real, immediate breathing room on an unacceptable reality where student loan payments compete with basic needs, like putting food on the table and accessing health care.”

The Education Department said that 7.5 million student loan borrowers have signed up for the SAVE plan and it will continue to process members as they meet the loan length and payment requirements. It added that borrowers eligible for forgiveness under the SAVE plan will automatically have their loans discharged without any action on their part moving forward.

LIV’s Joaquin Niemann among 3 golfers invited to Masters

Joaquin Niemann of Chile received a special invitation to the 2024 Masters tournament on Wednesday, despite having moved to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf . Niemann, 25, is among three players who have accepted a special invitation to play in the Masters. The inclusion of these three players increases the field list to 83 players.

Masters chairman Fred Ridley said Wednesday that Denmark’s Thorbjørn Olesen and Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune also accepted special invitations to compete in the tournament: “The Masters Tournament has a long-standing tradition of inviting leading international players who are not otherwise qualified. Today’s announcement represents the Tournament’s continued commitment towards developing interest in the game of golf across the world. We look forward to welcoming each player to Augusta National this spring.”

Niemann’s appearance at the Masters was in doubt after moving to LIV golf in summer 2022, which doesn’t currently award world-ranking points (he is ranked 81st in the Official World Golf Ranking). Niemann is a former winner of the Latin America Amateur Championship, run by Augusta National, and recently won the Australian Open (earning a spot in this year’s Open Championship) and LIV’s season-opening event in Mexico.

Olesen is making his first appearance in the Masters since 2019, and fourth overall. He recently won the DP World Tour’s Ras Al Khaimah Championship and has rejoined the top 60 in the world. Hisatsune, the reigning DP World Tour Rookie of the Year, will be making his Masters debut in April.

Four-time Gold Glove winner Eric Hosmer retiring after 13-years in MLB

MLB first baseman/DH Eric Hosmer has announced his retirement from baseball after 13 seasons in the majors. Hosmer, who won the World Series with the Kansas City Royals in 2015, posted to social media saying in part: “the playing days are unfortunately over but I’m committed to giving back to the baseball community …You have to be 110% committed and doing what is necessary both physically and mentally to play at the major league level and I reached a point where I wasn’t there anymore. I’m very satisfied with my career. I feel like I accomplished a lot, was around a lot of great people and have a lot of good stories to tell.”

Hosmer also shared that he is launching a new podcast, “Diggin’ Deep,” hosted with former MLB pitcher Peter Moylan and process and development coach Justin Su’a, from his new media company, MoonBall Media. Hosmer said of the podcast: “We’re not trying to break news, we’re not trying to figure out if any team has interest in trading for Mike Trout or anything like that. What we’re doing is digging deep into how people got started in their baseball careers, how something might have happened during their careers that changed them in a big way, things of that nature. That’s going to be something unique and a lot of fun.”

Hosmer retires with a .276/.335/.427 career average. He made his debut in 2011 with the Kansas City Royals, hitting 19 home runs over 128 games and hitting .293, earning him third place in AL Rookie of the Year voting. With the Royals he won the 2015 World Series against the New York Mets, the franchise’s first championship trophy since 1985.

In his best season (2017) Hosmer played in all 162 games, hitting .318/.385/.498 with 25 home runs, and earned a Gold Glove, a Silver Slugger, and finished 14th in AL MVP voting. Hosmer signed an eight-year, $144 million contract with the San Diego Padres (the biggest in franchise history at the time) but was traded to the Boston Red Sox in 2022, who released him during the offseason. In 2023, Hosmer signed a one-year deal with the Cubs and appeared in 31 games, hitting .234/.280/.330 with two home runs before the Cubs released him in late May.
