Supreme Court overturns Colorado ruling, says Donald Trump is eligible to appear on 2024 ballot

On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously in favor of former President Donald Trump in a historic case challenging his eligibility to seek the Republican presidential nomination under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment due to his actions around the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The High Court reversed the unprecedented decision by the Colorado Supreme Court that would remove Trump from the ballot under the provision after a state trial court found he participated in “insurrection” on Jan. 6 through incitement. The majority opinion is that the role of disqualifying a presidential candidate belongs to Congress:  “Permitting state enforcement of Section 3 against federal officeholders and candidates would raise serious questions about the scope of that power,” it stated.

The unsigned Supreme Court opinion read: “For the reasons given, responsibility for enforcing Section 3 against federal officeholders and candidates rests with Congress and not the States.  The judgment of the Colorado Supreme Court therefore cannot stand. All nine Members of the Court agree with that result.”

In holding that only Congress had the power to enforce the provisions under Section 5 of the amendment, the court said its decision would apply to federal offices nationwide: “This case raises the question whether the States, in addition to Congress, may also enforce Section 3. We conclude that States may disqualify persons holding or attempting to hold state office. But States have no power under the Constitution to enforce Section 3 with respect to federal offices, especially the Presidency.”

The decision came one day before voters in Colorado go to the polls on Super Tuesday, where Trump is on the GOP primary ballot. The decision also ensures that Trump will remain on the ballot as Republican presidential nominee in all 50 states.  Trump quickly celebrated the ruling, writing on his social media platform it was a “BIG WIN” for the country.

Former Trump CFO Allen Weisselberg pleads guilty to perjury in civil fraud trial

Former Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg has pleaded guilty to two counts of perjury Monday in connection with testimony he gave during former President Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial.

The charges accuse Weisselberg of committing perjury in a deposition as well as in testimony in Trump’s civil fraud trial. Bragg’s office alleged Weisselberg lied in July of 2020 in claiming he only learned Trump’s triplex apartment had been dramatically overvalued after Forbes published an article detailing the issue, when in fact he had known about the overvaluation before then.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg recommended Weisselberg, 76, be sentenced to five months in jail after entering the plea, and agreed to his release before sentencing, scheduled for April 10. Bragg’s office also said that as part of the plea, Weisselberg admitted that he committed conduct underlying other instances of perjury.

In a statement Monday, a spokesperson for the district attorney said, “It is a crime to lie in depositions and at trial — plain and simple. Allen Weisselberg took an oath to be truthful, and then committed perjury both at depositions during the New York State Attorney General’s Investigation and Proceeding, as well as at their recent trial  Today, Allen Weisselberg is pleading guilty to this felony and being held responsible for his conduct.”

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung slammed Bragg in response to Weisselberg’s plea, alleging the Manhattan district attorney “committed repeated prosecutorial misconduct in his illegal, desperate pursuit of Mr. Trump that violated federal and state constitutions and Bragg’s ethical obligations.”  Cheung added that Bragg “has been on a crusade of vindictive and oppressive pressure leading, today, to a forced plea by Allen H. Weisselberg. These are corrupt, election interference persecution tactics ripped from the playbook of Joseph Stalin, which cannot be allowed in America.”

Tampa Bay Buccaneers and WR Mike Evans agree to 2-year, $52M extension

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver has agreed to a reported two-year, $52 million extension with $35 million guaranteed.  According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the $26 million per season salary “is the largest for a wide receiver this old on his third contract.” Alluding to the news, Evans posted to Instagram on Monday: “Fire Them Cannons!”

The five-time Pro Bowl receiver, who was to enter free agency next week, looks to finish his career as a “Buc for life” in Tampa. Evans entered the league in 2014 after being selected No. 7 overall out of Texas A&M, and in each of his 10 NFL seasons he’s recorded at least 67 receptions and at least 1,000 receiving yards, making him the first wide receiver in NFL history to hit 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first 10 seasons. He’s also the second receiver to record 10 straight 1,000-yard seasons, second to Jerry Rice.  In 2023, he caught the third-most balls (79), registered the third-most receiving yards (1,255) and posted the second-most touchdowns (13) of his career.

Evans totaled 762 catches for 11,680 yards and 94 scores through his first 154 NFL appearances. He totaled a career-high 96 catches in 2016 and reached a career-best 1,524 receiving yards in 2018. Evans won a Super Bowl alongside former Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady in 2021.

Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce announces retirement after 13 seasons in NFL

Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce officially announced his retirement after 13-years in the NFL. The a six-time All-Pro center, future Hall of Famer played his entire career with the Philadelphia Eagles after being drafted by the team in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft.  Kelce, 36, posted on X early Monday morning that his decision was forthcoming, after having mulled over the issue for more than a year.

Kelce, who has seven Pro Bowl selections, six first-team All-Pro selections and one Super Bowl title under his list of career accomplishments, make his announcement during a press conference at the Philadelphia Eagles Training Center at the NovaCare Complex. Kelce shared in part: “So, this all brings us here to today, where I announce that I am retiring from the NFL after 13 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles .. And today I must admit, I am officially overrated. Vastly overrated. It took a lot of hardwork and determination getting here. I have been the underdog my entire career, and I mean this when I say it, I wish I still was. Few things give me such joy as proving someone wrong.”  Kelce reminisced about his love of the game when he was a child in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, saying: “Stepping on the field was the most alive and free I had ever felt .. It was a visceral feeling with football unlike any other sport.”

An emotional Kelce later thanked his wife, Kylie, mother Donna, brother Travis Kelce and numerous coaches, teammates and “cafeteria workers” along the way, before concluding by thanking the city of Philadelphia: “It has always been a goal of mine to play my whole career in one city. I couldn’t have dreamt a better one and a better fit if I tried. I don’t know what’s next, but I look forward to the new challenges and opportunities that await, and I know that I carry with me the lessons for my time here and that forever we shall all share the bond of being Philadelphians.”

After the announcement, the Eagles paid tribute to Kelce on social media, posting: ‘The greatest to ever do it 🐐 Congratulations on an incredible NFL career, Jason Kelce,’ and also sharing a video montage captioned: ‘To the GOAT. Thank you, thank you, thank you.’

Kelce showed no signs of declining in his final season — in 2023, he selected as a first-team All-Pro for the sixth time in his career, becoming the only center since the merger to earn six first-team All-Pro selections and a Super Bowl title. Kelce is the fifth center in NFL history with that many All-Pro selections.  Kelce allowed just one sack and 12 pressures on the season, with a pressure rate per dropback of 1.9% in 2023, coming off a career year in 2022 in which he allowed zero sacks, eight pressures, and a 1.3% pressure rate allowed per dropback.

After the end of the Eagles’ season where they lost a wild-card playoff game to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Kelce’s long-speculated decision to retire became more evident after he was shown emotionally hugging his longtime offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland.  But despite reports that Kelce had announced his intention to retire to teammates following the game, he later clarified that he had not made a decision at the time. During his New Heights podcast earlier in January, he shared with brother Travis what he said to his fellow teammates following that final game: “I did address the team and pretty much said, ‘I [believe] in every single one of you guys. Cherish your moments in this league.’ That’s kind of the way it went down. A lot of guys [said], ‘If that’s your last game, I feel sorry for you.’ Don’t feel sorry for me, mother——-  Well either way, I truly appreciated everybody in that room, and I’d go to war with them any day of the week… Enjoy the time you got.”
