President Biden, congressional leaders reach government funding deal

President Joe Biden and House Republicans said in separate statements on Tuesday that they have struck a deal on a government funding agreement for the rest of the fiscal year. Neither publicly announced details of the deal. It remains unclear if Congress will have enough time to pass the proposal before Saturday and avert a partial government shutdown this weekend. Congress needs to beat a Saturday morning deadline for the State, Defense, Homeland Security, Labor and Health and Human Services departments to keep operating; however, Republicans remain deeply divided and will likely need Democrat votes to pass, possibly putting Johnson’s job as speaker in jeopardy. The House is not expected to vote until the end of the week.

Biden said in a statement that an agreement had been reached, urging lawmakers to move as swiftly as possible to get the bill to his desk: “We have come to an agreement with congressional leaders on a path forward for the remaining full-year funding bills. The House and Senate are now working to finalize a package that can quickly be brought to the floor, and I will sign it immediately.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed that negotiators had reached a deal and that some major hurdles had been resolved, in particular funding the department of homeland security through the rest of the fiscal year. Johnson said on X: “An agreement has been reached for DHS appropriations, which will allow completion of the FY24 appropriations process. House and Senate committees have begun drafting bill text to be prepared for release and consideration by the full House and Senate as soon as possible.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said on X that both chambers were moving forward, with some details being worked out: “Senate and House leaders and the White House have reached an agreement to finish the final set of full year appropriations bills. The Senate and House Appropriations Committees are in the process of finalizing text and reports for Congress to closely review and consider ASAP.”

Lawsuit against Reddit, YouTube from Buffalo shooting survivors will move forward

A New York state judge has ordered that lawsuits against Reddit and Google’s YouTube can more forward, seeking to hold the social media platforms responsible for helping enable the avowed white supremacist who killed 10 Black people in 2022 at a Buffalo, New York, grocery store.

Justice Paula Feroleto of the Erie County Supreme Court said that the 25 plaintiffs can proceed with their lawsuit that is alleging that the social media platforms were designed to addict and radicalize users, which in turn gave the shooter, Payton Gendron, knowledge of the equipment and training needed for the mass shooting at Tops Friendly Markets in Buffalo, NY. Gendron, who was 18 at the time of the shooting, pleaded guilty to charges including murder and terrorism motivated by hate. He was sentenced in February 2023 to life in prison without parole, and also faces federal charges. The U.S. Department of Justice said in January it plans to seek the death penalty.

The civil lawsuits were filed by the gun control advocacy group Everytown Law; executive director Eric Tirschwell said: “We must hold accountable every single bad actor that prepared and equipped the shooter to target and kill members of Buffalo’s Black community.”  The 25 plaintiffs included store employees and customers who witnessed the May 14, 2022, shooting, and the son of one of those killed. Reddit and YouTube had sought a dismissal to the lawsuit, stating that they merely host third-party content and are not liable under a federal law governing such content: Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, or the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment. However, the judge said the plaintiffs can attempt to show Reddit and YouTube owed them a duty because their platforms were defective and led to injuries, adding that the mental distress that many witnesses suffered justified their pursuit of negligence-based claims.

Reddit said in a statement that hate and violence have no place on its platform, and that they continue to evaluate means to remove such content. YouTube spokesman Jose Castaneda said that they will appeal the decision, while expressing its “deepest sympathies” for attack victims and their families

Netflix to release NFL docuseries ‘Receiver’ ft. Davante Adams, Justin Jefferson, and more

Netflix announced the new sports docuseries ‘Receiver’, the sequel to its popular ‘Quarterback’ docuseries released in 2023. The streaming service said in a press release Tuesday that it is developing a series following pass catchers during the NFL 2023-24 season, posting on Instagram: “adams. jefferson. samuel. st. brown. kittle. from the creators of QUARTERBACK, RECEIVER is coming later this year”

‘Receiver’ features five star NFL pass catchers: Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson, Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. The series will chronicle the players on and off the field through the 2023-24 season and will premiere this summer, featuring eight, 45-minute episodes.  An official synopsis reads: “It’s been said that there’s no more difficult position in the NFL than the quarterback. But throwing the pass is only half the story. Receiver follows five of the NFL’s best pass catchers throughout the 2023 season on and off the field.”

“Receiver” is produced by NFL Films, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and Mahomes’ 2PM Productions. Manning said in a statement: “We are excited to be working again with Netflix and NFL Films to give fans unprecedented access to what it’s like to play receiver at the highest level. As we did with Quarterback, we look forward to telling the stories of five incredible receivers, each with their unique personality, skillset, and motivation for what drives them to be the best.”

Netflix VP of nonfiction sports Gabe Spitzer shared: “The natural progression is from a pass to a catch, so we’re excited to dive into the Receiver world after the success of our ‘Quarterback’ series. NFL Films, Omaha Productions and 2PM Productions have delivered again in finding unique and dynamic athletes who will further highlight the drama of this sport on and off the field.”

2-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell agrees to $62M deal with San Francisco Giants

Reigning Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell has agreed to a two-year, $62 million deal with the San Francisco Giants. Sources told ESPN about the terms of the agreement Monday night, while the left-handed pitcher confirmed the news by posting a photo of himself wearing a Giants uniform on Instagram.

Snell, 31, entered the league as a first-round pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2011 MLB Draft, making his MLB debut in 2016.  He went 21-5 with an American League and career-best 1.89 ERA over 31 starts in 2018, when he claimed his first Cy Young Award. The eight-year veteran joined the Padres in a 2020 trade from the Rays, going 14-9 with an MLB-best 2.25 ERA over 32 starts for San Diego en route to his second Cy Young Award in 2023.

Snell owns a 71-55 record with a 3.20 ERA over 191 career appearances; he joins a starting rotation with the Padres that also features Logan Webb, Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks and Alex Cobb. The Padres owned the No. 2 ERA in MLB (3.73) last season, and their starters were the best in baseball (3.69 ERA).

Toby Keith announced as part of 2024 Country Music Hall Of Fame Inductees

Brooks & Dunn announced the 2024 Class of Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum inductees in a live-stream held at the Hall of Fame Rotunda Downtown Nashville, Tennessee. The late Toby Keith will be honored in the Modern Era Artist category, along with James Burton in the rotating Recording and/or Touring Musician category and John Anderson in the Veterans Era Artist category.

CMA CEO Sarah Trahern said in a statement: “James, John and Toby were all original performers with clear, identifiable sounds who walked to the beat of their own drummer and inspired countless others to follow in their footsteps .. This year’s nominees exemplify the excellence of our genre. James, John and Toby have each made an indelible impact and brought their distinctive contributions to Country Music, enriching our format. Their influence is evident throughout the longevity of their careers, ensuring each legacy will thrive indefinitely. It is with great pride that we welcome these three remarkable individuals into the esteemed ranks of the Country Music Hall of Fame.”

Trahern noted that the timing of Keith’s posthumous induction does not violate the Hall of Fame’s induction rules against inducting an artist in the year of their death. While it isn’t typical to induct an artist the year they died, that doesn’t apply to Keith because he was selected prior to his death on February 5th (Keith was confirmed and elected into the Hall of Fame after a months-long process). Inductees are chosen by CMA’s Hall of Fame Panels of Electors, an anonymous body handpicked by the CMA Board of Directors.

Keith passed away on February 5th at the age of 62; his family posted at the time that the Oklahoma-born country star “passed peacefully last night on Feb. 5 surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”  Regarding the Hall of Fame honor, Keith’s family shared: “Toby’s passing left our hearts broken. We miss him so much, but we take comfort that his music and legacy will live forever. Thank you, Country Music Hall of Fame, for helping keep it alive.”
