Dodgers SS Mookie Betts fractures left hand after being hit by pitch

(Per AP News) Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts broke his left hand when he was hit by a pitch during the seventh inning of Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Royals. The former MVP and seven-time All-Star was injured after being drilled in the hand by a 97.9 mph fastball from Dan Altavilla.

Betts will see Dr. Steven Shin, a hand specialist, on Monday; when asked in the clubhouse after the game if he knew immediately the hand was broken, Betts told reporters: “I think that’s the first time I got hit in the hand so I wasn’t sure. I just went numb and it hurt. Unfortunately, it’s broke. There’s (nothing) we can really do now. Just kind of up and in. I was holding my ground. Unfortunately, it hit me in the hand.”

Dodgers’ manager David Roberts also told reporters after the game that Betts will be out for “some time” but will not need surgery. Roberts said: “It’s a big blow. I feel bad for Mookie because he’s having an MVP-type season .. You never want your guys to get hit. But just by his reaction, I felt that this was different.”

Meanwhile, Royals pitcher Altavilla said he was trying to go inside but that the fastball “slipped arm-side” and that there was “absolutely no intent.” Royals manager Matt Quatraro added: “We’re trying to get Dan some innings and see how he can do here. It’s very unfortunate. I mean, I feel terribly. No one wants to see that, especially to a guy like Mookie, who we all revere for his professionalism and what he means to the game.”

Betts went 0 for 3 Sunday to drop his batting average to .304, ninth in the majors. He was fourth in on-base percentage (.405) and tied for fifth in hits (86). Miguel Rojas will take over as the Dodgers’ starting shortstop with Kiké Hernández also getting time at the position.

Bon Jovi drops their latest album ‘Forever’

Bon Jovi has dropped its 16th studio album, Forever, which comes four years after the LP 2020, released in 2020. The 12-track Forever was recorded in seven weeks by Jon Bon Jovi and his bandmates — keyboardist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres, bassist Hugh McDonald, guitarist Phil X, percussionist Everett Bradley and rhythm guitarist John Shanks.

Frontman Jon Bon Jovi chronicled his journey recovering from vocal cord surgery in 2022 in the recent Hulu series Thank You, Goodnight – The Bon Jovi Story, sharing that it helped to inspire Forever: “I went into this surgery and I had a lot of time on my hands — all I could really do was sit around and start to think about songs. I started to feel joy again. And we — the collective we, who lived through COVID — we’d all come out of that fog, and we were interacting again. There was a new appreciation for life. And I was having this new appreciation for my body. And it led to all these songs.” Bon Jovi  added of the album:  “Nothing was on delay. It just flowed.”

Charlie Puth releases his new song “Hero”

Charlie Puth is back with new music, posting on Instagram: ‘My new song HERO is about when you see someone you love hurting themselves, ruining the things in their life that are good, but you just can’t save them. It’s one of the hardest songs I’ve ever had to write, but I wrote it in hopes that you’ve gone through something similar in your life, and that it can fill in the BLANK for you like it did for me. I’m very excited to share my next album with you, especially this song because it’s a great representation of what’s to come. I’ve never put out a song like this before- it’s very different for me, but I want to thank @taylorswift for letting me know musically that I just couldn’t keep this on my hard drive any longer. HERO is yours on May 24th and this is the single artwork. Thank you to all of my fans- you’ll never know how much you mean to me…’

The 32-year-old singer-songwriter said that he decided to release the song after being inspired by fellow singer Taylor Swift, who referenced Puth on her song “The Tortured Poets Department,” which features the lyric, “We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist.”

“Hero” is Puth’s second song of 2024, following his collaboration with K-pop group Stray Kids, “Lose My Breath” featuring Charlie Puth. He released his most recent album, Charlie, in October 2022.
