Yankees acquire ex-Mets infielder J.D. Davis in trade with A’s

The New York Yankees announced on Sunday that they have acquired veteran corner infielder J.D. Davis from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor-league infielder Jordan Groshans. Davis, 31, was designated for assignment by the Athletics last week

The acquisition comes after the Yankees recently have lost two players to injuries: Anthony Rizzo (broken forearm) and Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring strain). Rizzo broke his right forearm June 16 and is expected to be sidelined until August. Stanton, the Yankees’ primary designated hitter, strained his left hamstring Saturday and was placed on the injured list. New York called up Ben Rice from the minors to fill in at first in Rizzo’s absence.

Davis, 31, appeared in 39 games with the Athletics, batting .236/.304/.366 (96 OPS+) with four home runs and five runs batted in. Following a trade with the New York Mets, Davis spent the previous season and a half with the San Francisco Giants, where he posted a 113 OPS+ and hit 26 home runs over the course of 193 games. The Giants released Davis ahead of the start of the season after they signed free-agent third baseman Matt Chapman.

Toronto Blue Jays’ infielder Orelvis Martinez gets 80-game suspension for PED violation

Just two days after his Major League Baseball debut, Toronto Blue Jays infielder Orelvis Martínez was suspended for 80 games by MLB on Sunday following a positive test for the performance-enhancing drug Clomiphene, a fertility drug on the league’s banned substance list.

Per ESPN, Martinez, 22, is the Blue Jays’ top hitting prospect and was called up last week after shortstop Bo Bichette was placed on the injured list. Martínez signed with Toronto in July 2018 for a $3.51 million bonus and climbed his way up the Blue Jays’ minor league system. He hit .260 with 16 homers, 46 RBIs and an .867 OPS in 63 games this season at Triple-A Buffalo. He has been on the Blue Jays’ 40-man roster since November 2022. He went 1 for 3 with a strikeout on Friday at Cleveland.

As a result of Martínez’s suspension, he will lose about half his salary (his contract calls for $740,000 while in the major leagues and $120,600 while in the minors, both the minimum).  Martínez is eligible to return for the final six games of the regular season but is ineligible for any postseason games this year.

Martínez said in a statement released by the players’ association: “For the past two years, I have been trying to start a family with my girlfriend. During the offseason, we visited a fertility clinic in the Dominican Republic and after getting lab work done, we were prescribed a treatment, which included a medication called Rejun 50. Unfortunately, Rejun 50 contains a banned substance called Clomiphene. We wanted to keep this matter private, even within our family, and trusted the doctor who assured us this treatment did not include performance-enhancing drugs. Therefore, I made the mistake of not disclosing this to my team or the MLBPA. With that said, I took full responsibility for my actions and accepted my suspension. I will learn from this experience and come back to the field in September.” Blue Jays executive vice president and general manager Ross Atkins said in a statement: “We were both surprised and disappointed to learn of Orelvis Martinez’s suspension. We will do everything in our power to ensure Orelvis has learned from his mistake. Orelvis has our support, and we know he will get through this.”

Blue Jays manager John Schneider added: “Orelvis was upset, disappointed and pretty honest for a young kid when he told us. He’s obviously humbled and knows he made a mistake. We’re going to support him through the process.”

Def Leppard drop ‘Just Like 73’ featuring Tom Morello

Def Leppard just dropped the new song “Just Like 73,” featuring a guitar solo by Rage Against The Machine‘s Tom Morello. “Just Like 73” is the first new music from Def Leppard since they released their 2022 album, Diamond Star Halos.

Def Leppard drontman Joe Elliott shares: “it encapsulates a time that burned deep into our DNA. We wanted to celebrate that very important and glorious time,” with guitarist Phil Collen adding, “When I saw David Bowie on TV between 1972 and 1973, everything I thought I knew about music went from black and white to vivid technicolor. Our song ‘Just Like 73’ represents that awakening.”

Morello also said that he “had a blast rocking a solo” on the tune, noting, “I played ‘Rock Of Ages’ in my college cover band almost 40 years ago and here Def Leppard are still killing it in stadiums with a brand new tune that’s one of their best.”

Per Blabbermouth, the song arrives on seven-inch vinyl on August 2, 2024 and will be available in a special color variant only through the band’s D2C store (DefLeppard.com) and in black at all retailers.

Def Leppard is also gearing up to hit the road this summer with Journey, featuring special guests Steve Miller Band, Heart and Cheap Trick. A complete list of dates can be found at DefLeppard.com.

All That Remains share the music video for ‘Let You Go’

All That Remains dropped the music video for their new single “Let You Go.”  The video is directed by Tom Flynn (I Prevail, As I Lay Dying, Lamb Of God), with the song produced by Josh Wilbur (who also helmed “Divine”). “Divine” marked the group’s first original new material since the passing of their long-time guitar player, Oli Herbert.

Singer Philip Labonte said: “As a lyricist, I find songs about the human condition to be most compelling. ‘Let You Go’ is a great example of that. So many can relate to being in a bad relationship that you can’t seem to break out of. Be it with a substance (or with a person) and this song speaks to that struggle so many of us are familiar with.”

ATR will also be hitting the road this summer on the Destroy All Enemies Tour with Megadeth and Mudvayne.

Check out the video for ‘Let You Go’: here.
