9 deaths, 57 hospitalizations now reported from Boar’s Head deli meat listeria outbreak

A recent investigation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture revealed scores of health violations by meat company Boar’s Head at its Virginia facility, which is at the center of a nationwide recall of their deli meats that have been linked to multiple deaths across more than a dozen states. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) announced 14 more illnesses since its previous update earlier this month, bringing the total up to 57 across 18 states – marking the largest listeriosis outbreak of its kind in the U.S. since 2011, linked to cantaloupe.

The CDC confirmed that nine deaths have now been reported, adding Florida, Tennessee, New Mexico and South Carolina to the roster of 17 states with known listeria cases tied directly to the Boar’s Head outbreak.  All 57 people have been hospitalized in the latest outbreak, the agency confirmed, adding that six new deaths include one from Florida, one from Tennessee, one from New Mexico, one from New York and two from South Carolina.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (‘USDA’), a Boar’s Head liverwurst sample tested positive for the outbreak strain of listeria monocytogenes last month, at which time the food manufacturer issued a recall of all items produced at its Virginia-based facilities and paused operations. The recall was expanded from its initial notice on July 26, and mow includes approximately 7 million pounds of 71 products produced between May 10, 2024, and July 29, 2024, under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names. The items include ready-to-eat meats and poultry products intended for slicing at retail delis, plus some packaged items.

Per the CDC: “Everyone should check their homes for any remaining recalled Boar’s Head products since they can have long a shelf-life. Look for ‘EST. 12612’ or ‘P-12612’ inside the USDA mark of inspection on the product labels. Some of the products have sell by dates into October 2024.”

In its newly released records, the USDA said that inspectors for the agency detailed dozens of regulatory violations at the plant including black mold, mildew, cobwebs and insects repeatedly found throughout the site. All operations at Boar’s Head’s Jarrat, Va., plant have been suspended, with company officials working to disinfect the facility and retrain its current employees. According to a company spokesperson, no meat products will be sent out “until it meets the highest quality and safety standards.”

Boar’s Head company spokesperson Elizabeth Ward said in a statement: “As a USDA-inspected food producer, the agency has inspectors in our Jarratt, Virginia plant every day and if at any time inspectors identify something that needs to be addressed, our team does so immediately, as was the case with each and every issue raised by USDA in this report.”

The CDC recommends heating deli meats sliced at any deli counter to an internal temperature of 165 degrees or until the meat is steaming hot. Consumers also can protect against listeria by cleaning their refrigerators and any containers or surfaces that might have contacted sliced deli meats.

New England Patriots announce that Jacoby Brissett will be their starting quarterback

The New England Patriots announced that Jacoby Brissett will be their starting quarterback to kick off the 2024 NFL season. Brissett was battling rookie Drake Maye for starting duties.

Patriots’ head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed the news in a press conference Thursday morning, telling reporters: “We have decided — or I have decided — that Jacoby Brissett will be our starting quarterback this season. In saying that, as an organization, we’re 100% behind Jacoby.” Mayo said he spoke to Brissett and rookie Drake Maye ‘separately and together’ about his decision: “There are a lot of factors that led to this choice. I think the hard part is thinking in the short term and the long term at the same time. As an organization, though, we feel like Jacoby gives us our best chance to win right now.”

Mayo added that he did not rule out Maye starting at some point during the season: “I don’t want to get into hypotheticals. We can’t go into the season saying, ‘well he is going to go X amount of weeks.’ As long as Jacoby is going out there performing the way we all have confidence in him doing, he will be our quarterback this season.”

Brissett began his career in New England in 2016, getting two starts when Tom Brady was suspended for Deflategate. In the preseason, Brissett completed 5 of 14 (35.7%) of his throws for 36 yards and an interception. Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, completed 21 of 34 (61.8%) of his throws for 192 yards and a score in the preseason.

Brissett signed a one-year deal with the Patriots in March, completing 18 of 23 passes (78.3%) of his throws for 224 yards and three scores over three appearances last season for the Washington Commanders. He completed 64% of his throws for 2,608 yards, 12 scores and six interceptions over 16 appearances in 2022 for the Cleveland Browns. The veteran QB owns an 18-30 record over 48 career starts.

The Patriots’ opening game against the Cincinnati Bengals will take place on Sept. 8 in Cincinnati.

Cleveland Browns restructure Deshaun Watson’s contract to add nearly $36M in cap space

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that the Cleveland Browns restructured quarterback Deshaun Watson’s fully guaranteed six-year, $230 million contract to give themselves more salary cap space for the upcoming season.

A league source told ESPN that by converting $44.79 million of Watson’s $46 million base salary into a signing bonus, the Browns now have more than $62 million in cap space – the most in the NFL. The Browns are expected to roll over the majority of the cap space to have financial flexibility in the 2025 offseason, when they are already projected to be $44 million over the cap.

Watson signed a five-year, $230 million contract with the Browns in 2022, and have restructured that deal each of the last three years. Watson completed 61.4% of his throws for 1,115 yards, seven scores and four interceptions last season, but was limited to just six starts because of a shoulder injury. He also made just six starts in 2022 after being suspended for the first 11 games of the season. Watson is under contract for the next three seasons. His contract includes salary cap hits of $72.9 million in 2025 and 2026.

The Browns will host the Dallas Cowboys in their regular-season opener on Sept. 8 in Cleveland.

‘Dancing with the Stars’ pro dancer Artem Chigvintsev arrested on domestic violence charges

“Dancing with the Stars” pro Artem Chigvintsev has been arrested for domestic violence, according to Napa County, California, jail records. TMZ was the first to report news of the incident.

The 42-year-old Chigvintsev, who is married to former WWE wrestler Nikki Garcia (formerly Nikki Bella), was arrested Thursday morning just before 10 a.m. and has been booked on California penal code 273.5(a), which makes it illegal to injure a spouse, cohabitant or fellow parent in an act of domestic violence. His bail was set at $25,000, according to intake records obtained by PEOPLE. According to county records, he was released at 2:18 PM PT.
It has not yet been confirmed but given the charge, Garcia is presumably the spouse in question.

Authorities later released Chigvintsev’s mug shot after his arrest, showing Chigvintsev stares into the camera while standing in front of a gray background, wearing what appears to be a brown button-down shirt with green plaid collar.

Chigvintsev’s arrest comes just one day after Garcia posted on Instagram a video montage with clips throughout her relationship with Chigvintsev in honor of their anniversary on Aug. 27, featuring the lyrics to Elvis Presley’s hit “Can’t Help Falling in Love” as well as writing: “This song is our love story. I’ll never forget where I was when I asked Jesus about Artem. Having a conversation with He & God,” she also wrote. “How my feelings felt too soon. It all felt too fast. And then this song came on. And that’s when I knew that I was falling in love with him and that it was all meant to be. 🙏🏼✨ Happy Anniversary @theartemc I love you! ❤️‍🔥  Chigvintsev also posted on Instagram, writing: “Happy anniversary my love, can’t see my life with out you. You are my everything ❤

Garcia and Chigvintsev first met in 2017 when they were paired together on Dancing With The Stars, later confirming their romance in March 2019.  They were engaged eight months later and welcomed their first child together, son Matteo, in July 2020.

‘House of the Dragon’ to end with Season 4

Per The Hollywood ReporterHouse of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal has confirmed there will be two more installments of the ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel series, which will end with Season 4.

During a press conference  discussing the Season 2 finale of “House of the Dragon,” Condal also gave an update on the progress of the third season, sharing that the writing process has already begun with the intention of doing prep in the fall. Production on Season 3 will then follow in “earlyish 2025.”  Said Condal: “There are so many great events that we are already writing in Season 3 as it is. This war really comes to a big head at this point in the storytelling. I mean, if you look at Season 2, it’s largely a metaphor for a nuclear conflict… There’s gonna be giant moments of spectacle but real moments of surprise and character nuance that we’re very much looking forward to.”  Condal also suggested that fans of the show read ‘Fire and Blood’ so they can be “armed with lots of information going into Season 3.”

Author George R.R. Martin, who is co-creator on “House of the Dragon,” has previously stated on his personal blog that he believes it would take four seasons of 10 episodes each to tell the show’s “Dance of the Dragons” story from his “Fire & Blood” book. But HBO had not confirmed how many seasons “House of the Dragon” would be, until now.

All episodes of House of the Dragon are currently streaming on Max.

Soul Asylum will release its 13th full-length studio album Slowly But Shirley on Sept. 27, and are previewing the studio-recorded version of the track “Freak Accident”, that’s long been a fan favorite.

He shared:  “When I was a kid, I loved drag racing, and she was the first woman of drag race. It meant a lot to me that she was willing to stand up against all these men in racing. Foreigner to release career-spanning collection including unreleased song ft. Lou Gramm

Foreigner will release a career-spanning collection that includes “Turning Back The Time,” a previously unreleased track originally recorded in 1996 featuring Mick Jones and Lou Gramm. The new collection will drop on October 4th via Rhino, available on CD, 2 LP and digitally; “Turning Back The Time” is available now.

Mick Jones shared in a statement: “Foreigner’s membership in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a priceless highlight of my career. I hope that this collection of the songs that brought us here, along with some later recordings that light our way forward, will mean as much to all who listen to them as they do to me. There are a number of songs that Lou Gramm and I wrote together that have never seen the light of day. One of them, ‘Turning Back The Time,’ was co-written with Marti Frederiksen. Marti and I recently revisited and reworked the song. Because of the time that had passed, we were able to go back to it with a fresh perspective. The sentiment of the song spoke to us now more than ever and with the upcoming Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, we thought it an ideal time to let the world hear it.”

Turning Back The Time includes the Top 10 hits “Feels Like The First Time,” “Cold As Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” “Double Vision,” and “Urgent,” as well as the ballads “Waiting For A Girl Like You” and “I Want To Know What Love Is,” which reached No. 2 and No. 1 respectively.  The collection draws from Foreigner’s first six albums: Foreigner, 4, Double Vision, Head Games, Agent Provocateur, and Inside Information.

Foreigner is currently on the co-headlining Renegades & Juke Box Heroes Tour with Styx and special guest John Waite through the end of August, and will continued its Historic Farewell Tour this fall with ten additional dates starting September 23rd in Charleston, WV through October 9th in Las Cruces, NM. Loverboy will join on most dates with Lita Ford playing both Minnesota stops.

Turning Back The Time will be released on double vinyl and CD on October 4, and is available to pre-order now.
