Apple TV+ renews ‘Presumed Innocent’ for Season 2

Apple TV+ has renewed its crime drama, Presumed Innocent, for a second season. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming service has ordered a second season of the legal drama, which is based on Scott Turow’s best-selling novel.

The show’s eight-episode first season starred Jake Gyllenhaal as a prosecutor accused of murdering a colleague. Season 2, however,  will follow a new case – with no word yet on which (if any) members of the show’s current cast (including Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, O-T Fagbenle, Chase Infiniti, Elizabeth Marvel, Nana Mensah, Renate Reinsve, Peter Sarsgaard, Kingston Rumi Southwick and Gabby Beans) will return.

Presumed Innocent was Gyllenhaal’s first starring role in a TV series, and he says of the experience: “I had never been involved in a creative process like that, meaning not just the length of a show and that it was going to be eight hours but also that it was going to be revealed to me as we went along. I like the opportunity of different mediums. I like what it does, the questions it asks. As a performer, it’s so interesting to be in a different medium and see how it feels.”

Presumed Innocent is produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and David E. Kelley Productions in association with Warner Bros. TV. Kelley adapted Turow’s novel (which was previously the basis for a 1990 feature film, starring Harrison Ford) and also serves as showrunner.

Kelley, Tinker, Abrams, Rich, Gyllenhaal and Thomason are all set to return as executive producers for Season 2, with Turow again serving as co-executive producer.

‘Significant’ 4.4 magnitude earthquake shakes Los Angeles

A 4.4 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Los Angeles region on Monday afternoon at 12:20 p.m. PT , according to the US Geological Survey. The quake had an initial reported intensity of 4.7 but was since revised down to 4.4.

The Los Angeles Police Department posted on social media: Significant earthquake just felt in the Los Angeles area. Reminder, please use 911 only for emergencies. Be prepared for aftershocks.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter was located near the city’s Highland Park neighborhood, a few miles north of downtown Los Angeles. No injuries were reported and no major infrastructure damage was found, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. The shallow quake was only 7.5 miles deep and directly under the populated areas of Los Angeles, so was likely felt widely despite the relatively modest intensity.

Cal Tech officials said in a statement that the quake is believed to be along the lower Elysian Park Fault, but a number of faults are in the area, and added that there’s less than a 10% chance of a 5.0 magnitude or higher aftershock over the next week.  The 4.4 earthquake was preceded by two small earthquakes — 1.7 magnitude and 1.3 magnitude — over the last day, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake came on the first day of school for students at the Los Angeles Unified School District, the second-largest school district in the country. The Los Angeles Fire Department was sent into earthquake mode, with crews at 106 fire stations doing surveys of their districts. There were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage, the department said.

U.S. sends guided missile submarine to Middle East in fears of Iran’s retaliation against Israel

The Pentagon confirmed that the United States is sending the USS Georgia guided missile submarine to the Middle East and is speeding up the arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, equipped with F-35C fighters “in light of escalating regional tensions.”  Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had ordered the dispatch of the USS Georgia guided missile submarine to the region, and further ordered the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to accelerate its ongoing transit to the area.

The moves came amid mounting fears that Iran might soon respond to the assassination of Hamas’ political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran last month after attending the inauguration ceremony for Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Both Iran and Hamas blamed Israel for the killing, and while Israel has remained quiet on the matter it is widely believed to have carried out the assassination.

As Israel braces for retaliatory attacks from Iran and its proxies after the assassination of senior members of Hamas and Hezbollah, Israel Defense Forces spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said in a statement Monday: “We’re following Hezbollah and Iran and ready. We’re at highest alert.”

According to a readout of the Pentagon conversation, in a conversation with Israeli Defense Secretary Yoav Gallant,” Secretary Austin reiterated the United States’ commitment to take every possible step to defend Israel and noted the strengthening of U.S. military force posture and capabilities throughout the Middle East.”  The two defense officials “also discussed Israel’s operations in Gaza and the importance of mitigating civilian harm, progress towards securing a cease-fire and the release of hostages held in Gaza” as well as efforts to deter Iran, Hezbollah, and other Iran-allied groups in the region.

On Monday, the leaders of the U.K., Germany and France released their own joint statement calling for a cease-fire in Gaza, the release of the hostages and the “unfettered” delivery of aid to Gaza, and urged Iran and its proxies, like Lebanon’s Hezbollah, to refrain from attacks that could further escalate the conflict in the region.  The joint statement read: “They will bear responsibility for actions that jeopardize this opportunity for peace and stability. No country or nation stands to gain from a further escalation in the Middle East.”

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed “severe punishment” for the assassination, but it remains unclear exactly how Iran plans to retaliate.

MLB suspends Red Sox’s Jarren Duran for 2 games after he used anti-gay slur towards fan

Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has been suspended for two games without pay by Major League Baseball after he uttered an anti-gay slur at a fan during the team’s 10-2 loss Sunday to the Houston Astros. ESPN’s Jeff Passan tweetedBoston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has been suspended for two games after he uttered an anti-gay slur at a fan during Sunday’s game. His suspension will begin effective immediately and he’ll miss tonight’s game on ESPN against the Texas Rangers.”

Duran’s suspension began with Monday’s game against the Texas Rangers. The Red Sox also announced that Duran’s salary from the suspension will be donated to PFLAG (formerly called Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), sharing in a statement:  “Duran’s salary from the two-game suspension will be donated to PFLAG (Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), the United States’ largest organization dedicated to supporting, educating and advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people and those who love them.”

Duran’s slur could be heard on the NESN broadcast and quickly circulated online. In the sixth inning of Boston’s game Sunday at Fenway Park, a fan was heckling the All-Star while he was at bat, saying he needed a tennis racket to hit the ball. Duran turned around and said to a heckler: “Shut up, you f—ing f—-t.”  Following Sunday’s game, the Red Sox issued a statement in which Duran apologized for his actions: “During tonight’s game, I used a truly horrific word when responding to a fan. I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community. Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility. I will use this opportunity to educate myself and my teammates and to grow as a person.”

The team said at the time that the matter was addressed with Duran and also issued an apology to the Red Sox fans and LGBTQ community:  “The Red Sox addressed this incident with Jarren immediately following today’s game. We echo Jarren’s apology to our fans, especially to the LGBTQ community. We strive to be an organization that welcomes all fans to Fenway Park, and we will continue to educate our employees, players, coaches and staff on the importance of inclusivity.”

The suspension is consistent with MLB’s past discipline for the use of anti-gay slurs. Oakland Athletics outfielder Matt Joyce was suspended for two games in 2017 for directing an anti-gay slur at a fan; and that same season, then-Toronto outfielder Kevin Pillar was banned two games after uttering a similar homophobic slur used by Duran at Atlanta reliever Jason Motte, who Pillar believed had struck him out on a quick pitch.

Duran, who turns 28 in September, is batting .291 with an .853 OPS, 14 home runs, 58 RBI and 29 stolen bases. His 36 doubles lead the American League, and he leads the majors with 13 triples. The four-year veteran was named to his first AL All-Star team this year and won All-Star Game MVP honors by hitting a home run in the Midsummer Classic.
