5-year-old boy dies after wind gust sends bounce house airborne in Maryland

A 5-year-old boy died and a second child was injured when a strong wind gust sent a bounce house airborne during a baseball game Friday night in Waldorf, Maryland. Waldorf is located about 30 miles south of Washington, D.C. and 56 miles south of Baltimore.

Officials in Charles County said that the incident occurred at about 9:20 p.m. local time at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, during a Southern Maryland Blue Crabs game. Several children were playing inside the bounce house adjacent to the playing field when a wind gust sent it about 15 to 20 feet into the air. The children fell out of the bounce house before it landed on the playing field.

A 5-year-old boy was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died, while a second child was airlifted to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  Emergency personnel who were stationed at the stadium for the game, trainers from the baseball team and volunteer first responders in attendance all began administering medical care.

The Blue Crabs play in the independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball; the team said that Saturday’s game and all corresponding baseball activities were canceled. Courtney Knichel, general manager of the Blue Crabs, released a statement saying: “Our entire organization shares our condolences with the family mourning the loss of a child, and concern for the child who was injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all.”

Reuben B. Collins II Esq., the Charles County Government commissioner president, in a statement: “We extend our deepest empathy to the children and their families during this difficult time. We thank our EMS team and the Maryland State Police for their swift actions to ensure the children received immediate care.”

Team USA’s Scottie Scheffler wins Olympics Gold medal in golf

Team USA’s Scottie Scheffler rallied from four shots back to win the men’s individual stroke play golf tournament at the Paris Olympics’ Le Golf National course on Sunday in Guyancourt, France. Scheffler, 28, carded a 9-under-par 62 final round for an Olympic-record 19-under overall to win the 2024 golf tournament. Scheffler would birdie holes 1, 2, 3, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17 for an exciting final round, and added a gold medal to his victorious 2024 season that has already earned him a second green jacket with a win at the Masters this year.

Scheffler also set an Olympic record for 72 holes at 19-under 265. Great Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood, who fell out of the lead with a bogey from the rough on the 17th, fired a 5-under 66 over his final 18 holes to finish at 18-under, securing a silver medal; NS Hideki Matsuyama of Japan was 6-under Sunday and finished at 17-under overall to earn bronze. France’s Victor Perez (-16) finished fourth, just off the podium, with Ireland’s Rory McIlroy (-15) and Spain’s John Rahm (-15) finished tied for fifth.  Scheffler’s fellow Americans — Wyndham Clark (11-under) and Collin Morikawa (6-under) — tied for 14th and 24th, respectively.

An emotional Scheffler wiped away tears during the medal ceremony as the national anthem played, and later told NBC Sports regarding the importance of winning a Gold Medal in his career: “I’m not big on comparisons or anything like that, I’m just going to enjoy this moment. Like I said, I take tremendous pride in representing my country and I’m very proud to be going home, to be going back to the USA with a medal.”

Scheffler is currently ranked number one in the world, with six PGA wins in 2024, including winning the Masters (his second win in Augusta), the Memorial, the RBC Heritage, the Players Championship, and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.  He is also the first golfer to win six times on the PGA tour in a single season (since Tiger Woods in 2009).  Said Scheffler of his Olympic experience: “It was a pretty cool experience, it was very special. Like I said, representing your country is amazing. Putting on the flag every morning is a pretty humbling experience. Going out here and doing our best. It was definitely a fun experience, it was really cool to go see the other events. I’m proud to be going home with a medal.”

Novak Djokovic beats Carlos Alcaraz to capture Olympic Gold Medal

Serbian Novak Djokovic defeated Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the Paris Olympics men’s singles gold medal match on Sunday to make history and become just the fifth player ever to complete a career Golden Slam.

Djokovic took nearly three hours to beat Alcaraz  7-6(3), 7-6(2) on Court Philippe-Chatrier, telling NBC Sports: “We almost played three hours for two sets. It was an incredible battle, incredible fight. When the last shot went past him, that was the only moment I actually thought I could win the match. I mean I believed that I could win, but to actually win it, because he keeps on coming back. He keeps on asking me to play my best tennis. I don’t know what to say. I’m still in shock, honestly. I put my heart, my soul, my body, my family, my everything on the line to win Olympic gold at age 37. I finally did it.”

Alcaraz said after the defeat: “It is painful to lose the way that I lost this match. I had my opportunities. I couldn’t take them. Novak is playing great. He really settled in his position. In the difficult moments, he increased his level. He played unbelievable. I’m really disappointed, but honestly, I’m going to leave the court with my head really high. I gave everything that I had fighting for Spain. It was everything to me so I’m proud the way that I played today.”

Djokovic, a three-time French Open champion on the same clay courts of Roland Garros, joins Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams as the only tennis players to complete a career Golden Slam — wins of all four tennis Grand Slam tournaments and an Olympic gold medal.

Alcaraz, who won the 2024 French Open at Roland Garros, earned the silver medal; while Italian Lorenzo Musetti beat Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime to win the men’s singles bronze medal on Saturday.

Halle Berry exits Ryan Murphy legal drama ‘All’s Fair’ on Hulu

Halle Berry has left Ryan Murphy’s new legal drama All’s Fair for Hulu, with Variety reporting that Berry, 57, is no longer attached to the series as a star and executive producer. The outlet cited a scheduling conflict as the reason she parted ways with the production.

The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that Berry was joining the cast and executive producing team, alongside  Kim Kardashian and Glenn Close, who are producing alongside Murphy and 20th Television. Kardashian (who worked with Murphy on the most recent season of American Horror Story: Delicate) is said to be playing a successful divorce lawyer and owner of an all-female law firm in Los Angeles, while Berry’s role had yet to be revealed.

All’s Fair would have been Berry’s first TV role since CBS’ Extant in 2015; she will next be seen opposite Mark Wahlberg in the comedy-thriller The Union (premiering August 16 on Netflix) and the horror flick Never Let Go, out September 27. Her upcoming projects in pre-production are the thrillers Maude v Maude (with Angelina Jolie) and The Process, which she is starring in as well as producing.

Aerosmith cancel remainder of farewell tour, announce retirement from touring

Aerosmith has announced their retirement from the road and cancelled the remaining, rescheduled dates of their Peace Out farewell tour.  Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler sustained a vocal injury which forced the band to initially postpone their farewell tour after just three dates in September 2023; they were scheduled to resume the tour on Sept. 20 through late February.

The band shared in a statement on social media: “It was 1970 when a spark of inspiration became Aerosmith,” they wrote. “Thanks to you, our Blue Army, that spark caught flame and has been burning for over five decades. Some of you have been with us since the beginning and all of you are the reason we made rock ‘n’ roll history. It has been the honor of our lives to have our music become part of yours. * In every club, on every massive tour and at moments grand and private you have given us a place in the soundtrack of your lives. We’ve always wanted to blow your mind when performing. As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision — as a band of brothers — to retire from the touring stage. * We are grateful beyond words for everyone who was pumped to get on the road with us one last time. Grateful to our expert crew, our incredible team and the thousands of talented people who’ve made our historic runs possible. A final thank you to you — the best fans on planet Earth. Play our music loud, now and always. Dream On. You’ve made our dreams come true.”

Tyler sustained the vocal injury during a concert last September and initially said he wouldn’t be able to sing for the next 30 days, but later announced that the tour would have to be ‘put on hold’ because the injury was more serious than initially thought.   Aerosmith were scheduled to resume their farewell tour on Sept. 20 in Pittsburgh, with stops after that in Philadelphia, Dallas, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago and New York.

Aerosmith noted that tickets purchased through Ticketmaster will be automatically refunded, while all other refunds will be available at point of purchase.

Garbage have issued a statement regarding their tour cancellation due to frontwoman Shirley Manson’s unspecified injury, stating that all of their remaining 2024 tour dates have been canceled, but they plan to return to the stage in 2025.

While the band didn’t specify what type of injury Manson sustained, the vocalist assured fans in the caption of the post that she would do the tour if she could, writing: “No one is more crushed about this than I am. You know I would push through if I could.”   It remains unclear which show Manson was injured at; the last concert Garbage played was on July 20 at the OVO Arena in Wembley, England.

The band’s social media statement read: “It is with great and sincere regret that we announce the cancelation of all our remaining tour dates for the rest of the year due to an injury that Shirley sustained on our recent tour in Europe that will require surgery and rehabilitation to correct. Eddie Vedder’s Ohana Festival also announced that Devo would take Garbage’s place at the fest.  Garbage were originally set to perform on Sept. 27 with Pearl Jam, Crowded House, Maren Morris, Keanu Reeves’ Dogstar and a few others:  “We are excited to welcome DEVO to our lineup on Friday, 9/27 👏 Unfortunately, Garbage will no longer be joining us this year. Justin Timberlake pleads not guilty in DWI case, has license suspended in NY

Justin Timberlake pleaded not guilty plea to a revised misdemeanor charge in connection to his arrest for driving while intoxicated in Sag Harbor, New York this past June.  Timberlake’s drivers license was also suspended in the state of New York.

Timberlake, 43, was performing in Antwerp, Belgium over the weekend and appeared virtually on Friday in Sag Harbor Village Justice Court in New York before Justice Carl Irace. During the hearing, Irace urged caution and threatened Timberlake’s counsel with a gag order, referring to comments made outside of court to the media by the singer’s lawyer, Edward Burke. Burke previously disagreed with the claim that Timberlake was intoxicated, disputing to reporters that the police made “very significant errors” and asserting that “he was not intoxicated.”

Burke told reporters after court regarding the suspended license: “This is standard procedure with every DWI case. In New York, the suspension stays during the pendency of the case and is resolved at the end. Other states have similar regulations. .. We are very confident that charge, that criminal charge, will be dismissed.”

Timberlake was pulled over and arrested in June in Sag Harbor, with police stating that he drove through a stop sign and swerved into another lane. Authorities determined the pop star was driving drunk, had bloodshot, glassy eyes and “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” emanating from his breath, according to the criminal complaint. He also had slowed speech, was unsteady on his feet and performed poorly on a field sobriety test, the complaint said. Timberlake told the arresting officer he had only one drink, according to the complaint.

A further conference hearing in the case is scheduled for August 9, which Timberlake is not required to attend. The judge asked the singer’s attorney to find a date when Timberlake can appear in person, perhaps as soon as Sept. 13.
