Mariah Carey reveals that her mother and sister died on the same day

Mariah Carey revealed that both her mother Patricia, and sister Alison died on the same day last weekend. Neither the cause nor the exact date of Patricia and Alison’s death is known at this time.

Carey, 55, said in a statement shared with Variety: “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day. I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Mariah’s mother Patricia was a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach. She went on to marry Alfred Roy Carey, welcoming three children—Morgan, Alison and Mariah—before divorcing when Mariah was 3 years old.

Carey openly spoke about her complicated relationship with mom Patricia and how they faced struggles over the years, writing in her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey: “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions. Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s .. I had to stop making myself available to be hurt by [my family]. It has been helpful. I have no doubt it is emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact with my [siblings]. The situation with Pat, on the other hand, is more complicated. I have reserved some room in my heart and life to hold her — but with boundaries. Creating boundaries with the woman who gave birth to me is not easy — it is a work in progress.”   In the dedication section of her memoir, Carey wrote: “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”

Carey also spoke of her estrangement from her sister Alison, recently describing her on Oprah Winfrey’s Apple TV+ interview series as “troubled” and “traumatized.” In her book, Carey wrote that it was “emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact” with Alison and her brother Morgan.

‘Boy Meets World’ star Danielle Fishel reveals breast cancer diagnosis

Actress Danielle Fishel has revealed she is battling breast cancer. The Boy Meets World star, 43, shared that she was recently diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS).

Fishel shared the news of her diagnosis on her re-watch podcast Pod Meets World, which she co-hosts with her former co-stars Rider Strong and Will Friedle.  Said Fishel: “So I would like to share something with our listeners … I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which stands for ductal carcinoma in situ, which is a form of breast cancer. It is very, very, very early. It’s technically stage zero. To be specific, just because I like too much information all the time, I was diagnosed with high-grade DCIS with micro-invasion. I’m going to be fine. I’m having surgery to remove it. I’m going to be on some follow-up treatment. I’ve had to make a lot of decisions over the last couple of days.”

Fishel added: “The only reason I caught this cancer when it is still stage zero is because the day I got my text message that my yearly mammogram had come up, I made the appointment … For some reason I had always thought [if I were diagnosed with cancer] I would suffer in silence. I would get the diagnosis, I would not tell anyone. I would tell only my small group and then I would just suck it up. And then when I’m on the other side of it then I would tell people. But the place you have the most to learn from is that at the very beginning of a story or in the very messy middle of a story. My first instinct when I was diagnosed was to do that clam up thing … and then what I realized is the more people I talk to, the more people have their own experiences.”

The actress and her husband Jensen Karp have two sons: Adler, 5, and Keaton, 3.

Nebraska, which was released on Sept. 30, 1982, arrived two years after Springsteen’s first No. 1 album, The River. The dozen songs featured on Nebraska were recorded on a four-track tape machine in Springsteen’s New Jersey bedroom, recounting tales of murder, crime sprees and, and eventual redemption. The album became one of Springsteen’s most acclaimed records, reaching No. 3 upon its release.

The first trailer for the special  features Noah Kahan singing an acoustic “Atlantic City”, as well as Emmylou Harris singing “The Price You Pay,” Lyle Lovett covering“My Father’s House,” Lucinda Williams performing the Springsteen classic “Born in the U.S.A.” and Eric Church’s take on “Dancing In the Dark.” The show will also feature Harris’ take on the album’s title track, Lovett singing “Used Cars” and the Lumineers’ covering “Mansion on the Hill” and “State Trooper.”

The special was taped during an intimate gig at Analog in Nashville’s Hutton Hotel on Sept. 19, 2023, with musician/author Warren Zanes hosting the show.  Zanes is the author of a book about the album, 2023’s Deliver Me From Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska.  Shares Zanes in a statement: “I wrote a book about Nebraska because the recording stayed with me over decades. Every time there was trouble in my life I reached for Nebraska. When I started doing events around the book’s publication, I quickly realized the best of them had music. When I went to Nashville, I had a remarkable cast of musicians to help me tell this story.”

Skillet shares video for ‘Unpopular’ off new album ‘Revolution’

Christian rockers Skillet will release its first independent record, Revolution, on November 1st – the follow-up to 2022’s Dominion.

The first single off Revolution, titled “Unpopular,” is available now. The song was teased in Skillet’s new app, which will give fans early access to tickets, exclusive content, message boards, and more. Says lead singer John Cooper: “‘Unpopular’ is lighthearted, but there’s a clear message. So many people don’t have a place to belong. You used to know your neighbors. Our communities are online now, which contributes to the loneliness. You have powerful people telling you what reality is, what you should eat, what you should drive, and how you should live. They deem us ‘unpopular.’ In reality, we agree more than we disagree as a society. The majority of people just want to be free and they don’t really care whether or not you agree with them about everything.”

After 20 years on Atlantic Records, Skillet has opted to go independent. Shared Cooper: “We made records on the same label for 20 years, and it was a great experience. Since this was the first independent record, it put some pep in my step, so to speak. We did exactly what we wanted to do. If I was on the road and felt inspired to write, I just did. In the past, we’d make a bunch of ideas and whittle everything down for the album. This time, we only wrote and recorded 10 tracks, but it was all we needed. Musically, there are a lot of flavors on the record. It’s got the arena songs, but it also has some tunes that are more nostalgic and throwback Skillet.”

He continues, “Thematically, there’s so much nihilism in our culture. Depression and teen suicide are at epidemic levels. We’re revolting against a culture that creates nihilism, nothingness, and materialism. The album is poignant, but it’s also very confident and inclusive as well. It’s a record saying, ‘We have to be willing to stand up for what we believe in — even if it might be unpopular in some circles, but hey, maybe we could have a revolution of love, you know, a revolution of understanding, of tolerance towards people that we don’t agree with and come back to some human dignity and respecting peoples rights and where they’re coming from. And so, it’s kind of speaking to the division and the polarization that is happening, which I think is a really good message and what the whole ‘revolution’ thing is all about. We allude to it on the record cover where there’s a Skillet flag, and in the corner it lists I Corinthians, 13:13, a verse that says, ‘Hold onto these things: faith, hope, love. But the greatest is love.’”

Skillet also announced that they will hit the road this fall with Seether, followed by their first-ever tour of the Middle East in November, where the band will be playing in Turkey, Kazakhstan, United Arab Emirates, and more.

NASA confirms that Boeing Starliner astronauts will return home on SpaceX Dragon in 2025

NASA officials announced that the two astronauts who went up to the International Space Station (ISS) on Boeing’s Starliner will need to come home on a different spacecraft next year; adding that the Boeing Starliner will return in a separate flight, uncrewed.

Per NASA, Astronauts Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Sunita “Suni” Williams, who performed the first crewed test flight of Starliner, will return in February 2025 on the Space-X crew 9. NASA administrator Bill Nelson said at a news conference: “The decision to keep Butch and Suni aboard the International Space Station and bring the Boeing Starliner home uncrewed is a result of a commitment to safety,”

A Boeing spokesperson said in a statement that the company “continues to focus, first and foremost, on the safety of the crew and spacecraft … We are executing the mission as determined by NASA, and we are preparing the spacecraft for a safe and successful uncrewed return.”

Starliner is part of the larger Commercial Crew Program at NASA, which was testing if Boeing’s spacecrafts could be certified to perform routine missions to and from the ISS.  However, the spacecraft had been plagued by issues even before launch. The flight test was originally tentatively scheduled for May 6, but was scrubbed after a problem with an oxygen valve on a rocket from United Launch Alliance (ULA). A new launch date had been set for May 25, but a small helium leak was discovered in the service module, which contains support systems and instruments for operating a spacecraft. Five days after docking at the ISS, NASA and Boeing said the spacecraft was experiencing five “small” helium leaks but said at that time that ‘enough helium was available for the return mission.’

Wilmore and Williams were originally scheduled to only be on the ISS for a week and return on June 14 (after launching on launched on June 5), but their return has since been delayed multiple times. The pair integrated with the “Expedition 71” crew aboard the ISS, assisting them with research and other responsibilities, and will continue to assist with science experiments, maintenance and maybe some spacewalks during their extended stay on the ISS.

Steve Stich, program manager for NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, said that NASA teams spent all summer looking over the data on Starliner and felt there was too much risk with regard to the vehicle’s thrusters, adding: “there was too much risk for the crew.” Stich added that when SpaceX’s Dragon Crew-9 launches in September it will do so with only two of the four astronauts assigned to it to accommodate Wilmore and Williams on the return trip: “As we started looking at various options, it was obvious to both of us that the easiest and best option was to configure the crew nine vehicle with a couple empty seats on the way up.”

Norm Knight, NASA’s director of flight operations directorate, acknowledged the hardships placed on Wilmore and Williams, adding: “I care deeply about their families, I know this is a huge impact on their families and it means a lot,” he said. “I tell their families thank you for their support, thank you for what they do.”

Hurricane Hone brings heavy rain, damaging winds and power outages to Hawaii’s Big Island

Hurricane Hone strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane as it approached Hawaii Sunday morning, bringing damaging wind gusts and flooding rain to the Big Island. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) in Honolulu said Hurricane Hone reached its closest point of approach to the Big Island, with winds of 85 mph with some higher gusts passing about 45 miles south-southwest of South Point, Hawaii.

Flash Flood Warnings were issued for the Big Island with some areas seeing rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour. Hone is expected to produce rainfall totals between 6 and 12 inches over mainly windward or southeast-facing slopes on the Big Island, with locally higher amounts. The National Weather Service has warned that flooding in streams and rivers is likely, with concerns that the heavy precipitation could lead to landslides and mudslides in areas with steep terrain.

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Hawaii’s Big Island; the loss of power to thousands of utility customers also forced officials to close several roads due to flooding. More than a foot of rain has already fallen in many areas of Hawaii’s Big Island, including Nahuku, which picked up 15.81 inches of rain so far, as well as Kanakaleonui and Hakalau, which both picked up more than 14 inches of rain.

Hawaii County Mayor Mitchell D. Roth declared a state of emergency ahead of the hurricane and urged residents to prepare for the storm’s impacts:  “I want to make sure everyone is taking care of the things they need to take care of around the house. Going through their preventative checklist, whether it’s putting aside water or clothes or things like that.”

Additionally, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green also issued a proclamation declaring a state of emergency in the state of Hawaii that will remain in effect through Monday.  Hawaii’s Department of Transportation said the terminal at Hilo International Airport remains open, but passengers are urged to check their flight status before heading to the airport in case there are delays or cancellations.
