Los Angeles Dodgers win eight World Series title with victory against Yankees

The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched their eighth World Series title Wednesday in New York, coming back from a five-run deficit against the New York Yankees to secure the 7-6 Game 5 victory.  Los Angeles, which who won the World Series during the shortened 2020 season, earned its first title in a regular, 162-game season since 1988.

The Yankees started strong in Game 5 with home runs from center fielder Aaron Judge, third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. and designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton, giving them a 5-0 lead through four innings. New York ace Gerrit Cole kept the Dodgers hitless through the first four innings, retiring their first eight hitters in order, before multiple errors doomed New York in the fifth inning and allowed the Dodgers to tie up the game.

Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts said after the game: “There is so much love in this clubhouse that won this game today. That’s what it was. It was love. It was grit. It was just a beautiful thing.”

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts added: “It’s unbelievable. We had a great season and went through a lot of adversity. A lot of people counted us out. … These guys believed in one another. Even when we were down 5-0, they persevered and kept fighting and now we are world champions.”

First baseman Freddie Freeman, who was 6 for 20 (.300) with four home runs and a World Series record-tying 12 RBIs, claimed MVP honors.  Said Freeman: “Every spring training, this is our goal and for this to come true with this group of guys, I couldn’t ask for a better year.”

The Dodgers will host a championship parade on Friday, starting at 11 a.m. at Gloria Molina Grand Park in front of City Hall in downtown Los Angeles.

Supreme Court allows Virginia to purge 1,600 individuals from voter rolls

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that Virginia can continue with its purge of more than 1,600 voter registrations ahead of next week’s general election, that state officials say are held by non-citizens. The emergency decision is considered a victory for conservatives in Virginia and can possibly affect other states.

In a 6-3 ruling, the high court reversed a lower court’s decision that put the program on hold and required the state to restore the voters in question to the rolls. The brief order noted that the three liberal justices on the court — Ketanji Brown Jackson, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor — dissented from the decision.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin said in a statement: “This is a victory for commonsense and election fairness. Virginians can cast their ballots on Election Day knowing that Virginia’s elections are fair, secure, and free from politically-motivated interference.”

The Biden administration and purge opponents had won at the district court and federal appeals court levels before the Supreme Court reversed the injunction on Wednesday, allowing the purge to move forward.  The DOJ and other challengers said the purge was against federal law because it actually stripped eligible voters of their ability to vote, while opponents said those purged never knew they were taken off the rolls.

Harris ‘strongly disagrees’ with criticism of people based on who they vote for in response to Biden remarks

Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday said she ‘strongly disagrees with any criticism of people based on who they vote for,” with her remarks coming after President Joe Biden received backlash after his remarks in which he appeared to call Trump supporters “garbage” on a video call with Latino activists.

Speaking to reporters on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews before leaving for campaign events, Harris said that while Biden had “clarified his comments,” she added, “I strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they voted for. You heard my speech last night and continuously throughout my career: I believe that the work that I do is about representing all the people, whether they support me or not. And as president of the United States, I will be a president for all Americans, whether you vote for me or not.” (per NBC News).

In a video call with Latino activists Tuesday evening, Biden commented about the a joke made at a Trump rally Sunday at Madison Square Garden by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, in which Hinchcliffe called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.”  Biden seemed to reply: “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable.”

After Biden’s comments drew heavy criticism from Republicans, the White House went on to send out a transcript in an attempt to clarify that Biden was not saying that Trump supporters were “garbage”, but simply tripped over his lines while meaning to say he was condemning Hinchcliffe’s remarks specifically.

Later in a post on X later Tuesday, Biden reiterated that what he said was in reference to Hinchcliffe: “Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage—which is the only word I can think of to describe it. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid to miss 2-3 weeks with ankle injury

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid will be out 2-3 weeks due to an ankle injury suffered during Monday night’s 6-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The center started the game and won the opening face-off, but lasted just 37 seconds after he was tripped by Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski while trying to enter the offensive zone, falling into the right boards. After the game, coach Kris Knoblauch said McDavid would be returning to Edmonton for further evaluation.

Knoblauch said: “It’s tough any time you are playing without your best player, but it’s something that’s hopefully short term. Obviously, our team is going to look different. Maybe that’s one, two games.”

Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said after the game: “He’s our leader and also the best player in the game. So, of course you’re going to feel it. We’ve got to do a better job of stepping up when a guy like that goes down. It’s your captain, your best player. It should be an opportunity for guys to step up and say, ‘Oh, I’ve got this. It’s more ice time, more opportunities.”

McDavid has 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in 10 games this season; last season, he was third in the NHL with 132 points (32 goals, 100 assists) in 76 games.

The Oilers face the Nashville Predators on Thursday and the Calgary Flames on Sunday, with their next home game against the New Jersey Devils on Monday.
