Matt Gaetz withdraws his name from consideration of Attorney General position amid backlash

Matt Gaetz, 42, has withdrawn from his attorney general nomination amid his ongoing sex-for-hire scandal and subsequent House Ethics Committee investigation.

The former Republican member of Congress from Florida announced Thursday on social media that he is withdrawing his nomination after “unfairly becoming a distraction” to the transition of power to the President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance.

Gaetz wrote on X: “I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback — and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition. There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1 ..I remain fully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful President in history. I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I’m certain he will Save America.”

Gaetz had drawn backlash from several Republican lawmakers due to controversy over his connection to a federal sex trafficking investigation being investigated by the Justice Department. He remains under investigation by the Republican-controlled House Ethics Committee over similar allegations.

Braves’ Chris Sale and Tigers’ Tarik Skubal win 2024 Cy Young Awards

Southpaw pitchers Chris Sale (Atlanta Braves) and Tarik Skubal (Detroit Tigers) have become first-time Cy Young Award recipients in 2024. The awards for the triple Crown winners – and former Tommy John surgery patients — mark only the third time two left-handers won Cy Young honors in the same season (Steve Carlton and Sparky Lyle won in 1977 and Randy Johnson and Barry Zito in 2002).  Sale and Skubal are also the first pitchers to win the Triple Crown in a full season since Clayton Kershaw and Justin Verlander did it in 2011.

Sale, 35, won the National League honor, receiving 26 of the 30 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America to finish ahead of Philadelphia’s Zack Wheeler, and Pittsburgh rookie Paul Skenes. Sale finished 18-3 with a 2.38 ERA and 225 strikeouts — leading the NL in wins, ERA and strikeouts. Sale said: “To be able to show my sons the hard work, the dedication, not giving up. My wife having my back the whole time. I’m sure I was real peachy at times during those injuries. I was talking to my dad the other day and whether it did or didn’t happen, he was proud of me.”

Skubal, 28, unanimously won the American League award, with Kansas City’s Seth Lugo finishing  second in the voting, and Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase was third. Skubal’s breakout season saw him finishing the season with a 18-4 record and 2.39 ERA, with 228 strikeouts. Skubal said: “It was a ton of fun to be part of. The last two months of our season and even the postseason was very special. The memories and the experience will obviously help our club going forward, and I’m glad we got to experience it as a team and as a young team.”

Mavericks’ Luka Dončić to miss at least one week with wrist sprain

The Dallas Mavericks announced on Thursday that star Luka Dončić will miss at least one week with a right wrist sprain. Doncic will miss games against the Denver Nuggets, Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks.

Per Shams Charania, Dončić will be reevaluated in a week. He was seen sporting a wrap on his wrist during his press conference following the team win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday; when asked about his wrist, Dončić said, “I don’t know, honestly. Started feeling it in the first quarter,” adding that it was “nothing serious.”

The Mavericks have an 8-7 record, putting them in 11th place in the Western Conference. Dončić has 28.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.6 assists this season, but is shooting just 43.5% from the field overall.  More recently, the five-time All-Star sat out during the Cavs 121-119 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Nov. 17 due to a right knee contusion.

LINKIN PARK share video for ‘Over Each Other’

Linkin Park -featuring Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Dave “Phoenix” Farrell, Joe Hahn, along with Emily Armstrong and Colin Brittain—have shared the video for their new song “Over Each Other,” off their comeback album, From Zero. The album is the band’s first full-length release since 2017’s One More Light, which was their final album before the passing of lead vocalist Chester Bennington.

The band’s new singer, Emily Armstrong, shares: “This song is an extra special one for me, as it’s my first solo vocal in Linkin Park. I can’t believe I’m saying that!  As I spent more time with the band over the past year, I gradually started contributing more to the music-making process, so on this one, [co-vocalist and multi-instrumentalist] Mike [Shinoda] and I wrote the lyrics together,” she continues. “And then add in shooting this video with [turntablist] Joe [Hahn] in Korea – it’s all a dream come true.”

“Over Each Other” is the third From Zero cut to be released, following “The Emptiness Machine” and “Heavy Is the Crown.”  The accompanying video, which was directed by Hahn, is streaming on YouTube.  Check it out: HERE.
