Dallas Cowboys and head coach Mike McCarthy parting ways

A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday that head coach Mike McCarthy will not returning to the Dallas Cowboys after five seasons with the organization. McCarthy’s contract with the Cowboys expired last Wednesday, but the team held an exclusive negotiating window with him until Tuesday at midnight.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the two sides were unable to come to terms on the length of contract, and decided to part ways. According to sources, Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones refused to let the Chicago Bears interview McCarthy during the Cowboys’ exclusive window, despite reportedly not engaging with the coach in contract negotiations.

The move comes after McCarthy and the Cowboys missed the playoffs this year, for the first time since his inaugural season in 2020.  This season the Cowboys finished with a 7-10 record, and McCarthy helped turn things around midway through the season, winning four of five games after initially falling to 3-7 at the start.

McCarthy owns a career 174-112-2 overall record; he previously served as coach of the Green Bay Packers for 13 seasons, leading them to the Super Bowl in 2010.

Carlos Santana postpones 2025 residency launch after fall at home

Legendary guitarist Carlos Santana has postponed the next run of his Las Vegas residency shows because of an “accidental fall” at his home in Hawaii.

Santana’s management confirmed in a statement: “I am sorry to say that Carlos was out taking a walk at his vacation home in Kauai. He took a hard fall, and he broke his little finger on his left hand. He had to have pins inserted in the finger. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to play guitar for approximately six weeks. Doctors do say that he will recuperate fully. Carlos is doing well and is anxious to be back on stage soon. He just needs to heal. Santana profoundly regrets these postponements of his upcoming performances, but accidents happen, and his health is our number one concern. He is looking forward to seeing all of his fans very soon.”

Santana had dates scheduled for An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live in January, February, and May 2025. It remains unclear if Santana’s 2025 Oneness Tour will be affected, which is slated to kick off in Highland, CA on April 16th with stops in Phoenix, AZ; Albuquerque, NM; San Antonio, TX; Sugar Land, TX; Thackerville, OK; Tulsa, OK; and Nashville, TN before heading to Europe and the UK in June.

LA Wildfires: Death toll rises to 24 as winds intensify in area

(Per ABC NEWS): Thousands of firefighters are continuing to battle several wildfires across 45 square miles of densely populated Los Angeles County, fueled by severe drought conditions and strong Santa Ana winds. About 105,000 people remain under mandatory evacuation orders and another 87,000 are under evacuation warnings.

The wildfires have killed at least 24 people with dozen others remain unaccounted for, as the fires swept through 40,000 acres in the greater Los Angeles area, destroying entire communities and more than 12,300 structures.

Evacuation orders for the largest blaze, the Palisades Fire, expanded. It is 13% contained and threatens Brentwood, Encino and Westwood.  Los Angeles County declared a public health emergency, warning that smoke and particulate matter could pose immediate and long-term threats (via NBC News).

The National Weather Service Los Angeles office posted “particularly dangerous situation” (PDS) red flag winds warnings for 4 a.m. Tuesday (local time) through noon Wednesday, saying winds could be strong enough to cause “explosive fire growth.”
